Ravens sign CB Derek Cox

They must really like Orr.

Yep.  Orr took Bynes' spot.

This one is a head scratcher. Bynes is presumably a good special teams player (although I read somewhere he was only 8th on the team in special teams tackles last year) and he has starting experience. Granted we are deep at inside linebacker but if that position gets decimated by injuries I would rather have Bynes set in than Orr.

Seems like a heck of a waste to have Bynes running with Mosley during the pre-season now. Providing Arthur Brown quality experience would have been much smarter imo, unless they thought they could showcase bynes to complete a trade.

Not really. I said this in the other thread that it makes sense after the trade rumors. I think the plan was to trade Bynes all along, which is why he was inexplicably playing over Arthur Brown, who looked far more dominant than Bynes when he was in the game.

It's a matter of deception, where you use a guy you know you want to move to feature him to increase his value by making him appear more valuable to the team. The reality is he wasn't that valuable and we must've planned on cutting him. If we didn't use Bynes as an apparent starter, then there would be no leverage at all to get a pick. The other managers would've said that we played him against back-ups. I'm guessing we've been working on trading him and it never materialized.

Wow i'm shock we cut Bynes and if anything I thought we could atleast traded him.

We probably failed to do it. That is the only explanation.

Nobody is giving up a draft pick for Bynes. The Patriots only got a conditional 2016 (i.e. two years from now.) 7th round pick for Ryan Mallett. A potential starting QB got literally the bare minimum. There was no chance of getting anything for Bynes.

This. I'm glad we've finally let go though, I've never seen what he really has to offer with how were moving away from having basic thumpers. This was the one guy I was sure would get cut a long time ago, now I find out its possible they were trying to bait someone into trading a pick for him, yeah ok.

Well first of all I don't think he's a starting QB. He looked horrible. He's a back-up QB with some potential. We could've gotten a 7th and that's about it.

According to rotoworld.com Bynes appeared in 15 games last season, making six starts. He graded out as a top-15 inside linebacker at Pro Football Focus, and excelled against the run. He wasn't just thumper but I seen moments where he cover well and etc.

He wasn't the flashes or anything but what  ever was ask of him he got it done and he wasn't terrible either.

The problem with Bynes is, there was plenty of tape out there on him. In the preseason the only thing he did was hurt his stock, as he looked bad. I couldn't imagine him bringing any value at all, either way.

On the Texans he is. Have you seen the QBs they have?

Even if he is just a backup, a young backup QB with upside has much more value than a dime a dozen primarily special teams inside linebacker.

I'd take Fitzpatrick over him. Mallet isn't that special. I know a lot of people like the whole Brady back-up deal but he's not that good. It doesn't matter much since Bynes is gone, and frankly I didn't think he was that special and if you know my posts, you'll know I mentioned he's the one I imagine he's the one we wanted to move. McClellan is better in that he can play both LB positions and his special teams value is higher as well. It's why I never bought into people cutting him.

The bottom line is there was potential for a trade but his value is very low and at best he probably would've gotten us a very complicated trade for a conditional 7th, much more complicated than McClain. Combined with his rather poor preseason and it's not surprising he's gone.

He excelled against the run, if he was actually good in coverage he wouldn't have gotten cut. He is the very definition of a thumper to me.

If he truly got a top 15 grade, it was from being good against the run and having a positive penalty grade. His ability to play in space and run with a man would have dropped him far below the top 15

Bynes was the 4th maybe 5th ILB, why is everyone acting so surprised. CB depth is a lot more important.

Bynes maybe be the 4th or 5th ILB, closer to 4th or 3rd, but we're carrying 6.

Why is everyone so high on Bynes? He brings nothing but a bit of thump.

Is that a bad thing though?  Our top 3 LBs aren't known for their run stopping skills right now.  Mosley looks good but still has some work to do getting off of blocks.  Daryl is much better as a coverage guy.  Arthur Brown really improved at getting off of blocks and making the hit, but still has a slight frame.  Bynes was the big body in the middle which is why this is weird.

Exactly this. I agree on all accounts regarding each of the three ILBs. If anything, a thumper would've been preferred as a reserve behind that trio. I am a fan of keeping Derek Cox. I found it surprising that he was released after reportedly being a good fit in Mike Zimmer's system and playing well in the preseason to boot. I was also surprised to a smaller extent that he didn't make our final roster after a solid outing, especially given the circumstances. However, perhaps there was another player who could've merited this fate other than Bynes. I'm not devastated about the news, but it certainly caught me off guard. I hope that both Cox and Orr have successful seasons.

Yeah I mean, it's not the end of the world.  I never viewed Bynes as some great starter, but I thought he was at least a valuable reserve and there's not much question in my mind that he deserves a spot on this team with his skill set and history here.  Unfortunately, the FO felt different and I can't really argue with that.  I like Bynes though and I don't necessarily think he deserved to go.

So much tweaking going on the next few weeks, it's impossible to know the whys & wherefores of roster moves. After the first 2-3-4 games we'll be seeing a few cuts also. Good luck to the winners & the losers.

I would have rather seen Aiken go, but I don't think it's a huge loss or anything. Speaks to how much confidence Harbs and Ozzie have in Brown.

I read somewhere that Derek was cut after his struggles working as a nickel back. I wonder if he might do better if used strictly outside?

Hopefully that is the case since we have Webb to slide inside and play the slot.
