Ravens sign CB Derek Cox

Yes, that would be good.

Cary started on a defense that won a Super Bowl AND never missed a game due to injury. Hate on him all you want but he was a good corner for us (good...not necessarily great).

Tough spot for him. He didn't stand out tonight but didn't do anything wrong either, which is acceptable being that he just signed here and hadn't even practiced with the team yet. Are we comfortable with giving him a spot with such little information on him?

Dont think they would have signed him and expected to decide on one game. Pretty sure he's on the 53 regardless. I could be wrong, however.

You'd think, but can you give an unknown (and recently, really bad) player a spot over someone else?  Chykie and Franks have both played surprisingly well these past 2 games.  Can you put Cox in over one of those guys, or does he make it as a 6th CB and force someone at another position off of the roster?  It's so tough bringing in someone this late.

I think the latter. He forces off Wenning, Toussaint, Hurst, or Thompson/Aiken for depth at CB. Just in case Webb or Asa or Jimmy can't go week 1. You may need another physical corner like Cox to step in and play. Smith, Webb, Jackson, Cox, Brown, and Franks i think will make our roster.

Cox played really really well. Against backups or not, he was impressive. His technique was really solid both outside and inside at the slot. It's rare to see a guy play so loose and free only 2 days being with a new team but he did. He played with so much confidence and with such speed it has me very excited to see what the guy could do after getting accustom to the defense and his teammates.

One thing I really liked about what I saw from Cox in the slot, that all others struggled with, was his physicality. All our guys have been allowing WRs to get inside of them on those 3rd down slants, but Cox played that route perfectly with the opportunity he was given.

He was also a very solid tackler which is something we definitely need. Again it was against backups and he has only been here for a couple days, but from what I've seen of him i'd say he has a really good shot at being the #3 or #4 CB a some point much sooner then later. I think this guy definitely makes the team and I hope being a former Pro Bowl alternate, signing a big deal, then being cut by 2 teams in less then 5 months puts a huge chip on his shoulders.

I don't know how and why these players continue to fall into Ozzie's lap, but he might just be another one of those castoffs that finds a home here. Now of course, he was cut for a reason, so seeing him play in the regular season will speak much louder. However the Ravens have a way of allowing a player, especially defensively, to be themselves and play free. We'll see how Cox adapts.

wow, this is underwhelming. Maybe he has a revival in Bmore?

Corey Graham, Carey Williams, Chris Carr and, to and extent, Josh Wilson were underwhelming signings.  I think its safe to say that he'll improve.

So..... I guess we didn't like him enough to keep him on the 53. Or maybe he'll be back on the team once some other moves have been made? I know we're notorious for playing with the roster by cutting and resigning players on what feels like a daily basis.

Aaron Wilson reports that we have re-signed Derek Cox. It's unclear who is being moved to make room.

Guess that means they couldn't pull off a trade of any kind

I wouldn't say that just yet. Reportedly, we were going to re-sign Derek Cox whether we made a trade or not. Think there's still a shot at a trade. Small one, maybe.

I'm not sure I understand the point of cutting him just to resign him before week 1. Cutting and resign him AFTER week 1 makes sense since his veteran contract is no longer guaranteed but this doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The only thing I can think of is they wanted to protect on of the WRs on the 53 man roster for awhile and try to sneak them through later but that seems like an awfully big risk to take for a fringe WR prospect. What if Cox decided to sign somewhere else in the meantime? There are a lot of CB needy teams out there.

Browns would have snatched them up, and we don't need to help a division rival who is desperate for a WR, not to mention would gain some inside info on our new offense.

They know we are needy at DB which is why they kept so many, just how the game works

I'm thinking they try to trade a linebacker and receiver, if they don't cut one in favor of Cox. A reason I could see cutting him is to evaluate those guys a little further- Aiken v Thompson and Bynes v Orr v McClellan

Just a guess, but I suspect he'll be cut again Saturday (if our other corners stay healthy all week) then re-signed again next Monday.

Josh Bynes was waived in order to sign Derek Cox.

Wow, surprised by that. Thought Orr and/or McClellan would be before him on the ILB chopping block.

Seems like a heck of a waste to have Bynes running with Mosley during the pre-season now. Providing Arthur Brown quality experience would have been much smarter imo, unless they thought they could showcase bynes to complete a trade.
