Ravens sign CB Derek Cox

Why do we NEED to be looking for a trade?  We have 3 quality corners and the guys behind them have showed in the Redskins game that they are able to cover for them.  I doubt all 3 go down consecutively again.

Webb and Jimmy are top corners in the league while Asa looks solid along with Brooks.  Chykie Brown seems to be coming along and has improved greatly since his first couple game.

Exactly. I have said this time and time again. IF our CBs are all healthy, our depth and quality at the position is more than adequate. The media has just been blowing it out of proportion, which in turn makes the fans blow it out of proportion.

He was terrible last year for The Chargers to the point he was benched. He recently was on the Vikings team but they released him and most of The Viking fans were shocked. I don't know what happen to Cox but he does have alot of experience as a starting cornerback and maybe The Ravens can get him back to his 2012 form.

The thing with the chargers though, he was on a 4 year 20 million dollar contract.  His role here would be filling in if one of our top 3 corners gets injured.  Heck, we have a few guys behind them who are passable.  Our corner situation is not as bad as it looks.

I'm more worried about free safety than anything.

Asa hasn't played a regular season defensive snap and Jimmy and Webb have injury histories. Good to get depth because against the Redskins, there were times were four safeties were on the field together

Well we know who  the two starters are  when it comes to the cornerback position but the number 3 spot is questionable. I hope Asa Jackson is the guy but he has only played in one preseason game so far and i'm not sure if that's enough for me or others to feel comfortable with him being the right man for the job.

Do we have 3 quality CBs though?  Despite Asa looking pretty good for the most part, he's never played a defensive snap in the regular season.

True, but he is our 3rd cornerback.  Some teams are lucky to have even one good cornerback.  If we were counting on him to be our number 1 or 2 then yes there would be a problem.  He is more than good enough for the number 3 position and I am that if we start the season with all 3 healthy, that we have enough depth to cover for any injuries.

We won the Super Bowl with Webb suffering a season ending injury in week 4.  Cary Williams was a starter!  We should be fine.

EDIT: If you want to downvote at least give me a counter argument.  I don't even see why you would downvote for a difference in opinion in the first place.

Should I assume this is the end of Franks?  He was playing so well though...

I wouldn't say the end, but it became increasingly more difficult for him to make the team.  Assuming we add no one else, the battle for the 5th CB spot is likely between Cox and Franks.

I think what others and even myself are saying is how do we really know Asa Jackson is good enough for the number 3 position. What have you seen this year other than one preseason game to say that he is? .

You making it out like Cary Williams was a terrible cornerback or something and he definitely wasn't.

Is he good enough?  How do we know that?  He's played in 1 preseason game so far.  While he performed well last year in the preseason, he was on the 2nd/3rd team D.  I like Asa, but there's no way of knowing that he's "good enough."  As I said above, the guy has 0 regular season defensive snaps to his name.

The only position that worries me a little is Tackle. Monroe seemed to be struggling a bit this preseason. I know we are going with Wagner, whether I like it or not, but I would love to have a proven commodity at RT that could play LT if Monroe got injured. But just like Cornerbacks, Tackles are in high demand and no one is trading a good one. Maybe it was just how pathetic our o-line was last year, that even with the upgrade at Center and KO and Yanda now healthy at guard, I still long for more.

I thought our young CBs did very well. I was pleasantly surprised.

Maybe we think we can get him back to form... If we can we'd have 3 good CBs. Albeit injury prone

There's just no way you go from being the best player on the OL last year to poor in one off-season. I think Monroe is either not trying because it's preseason or something is wrong. Maybe he's hurt. Not sure. I would imagine if it was him chilling because it's preseason he would've done well in camp but he had his struggles there too.

Monroe has been one of the better LT for a while now. One of the best if not the best player on the JAX offense. There's just no way it's a talent deficiency.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but we can have something real good on defense if everyone stays healthy.  If Brooks keeps improving, Will Hill can stay clean and Derek can get acclimated with the defense, by the end of the season we can easily be a top unit.  Fierce pass rush and a very strong secondary.  We'll just have to wait and see.

I actually like this signing. I'm not sure he will do well here. After all, he did flame out in San Diego and was cut by Minnesota, but he does have a decent stat history. Played 16 games his rookie year in 2009 and had 11 PD with 4 INT and 58 tackles. Not bad. Could be telling, perhaps he was targeted and gave up yards but made the tackle. In 2010 he played 13 games and started 11, with 58 tackles and 8 PD with 4 INTs. In 2011, he played and started 6 games, had 16 tackes, 2 PD, 0 INT. In 2012, he started 12 games with 55 tackles and 11 PD and 4 INT. And finally last year, 2013, he started 11 games and played 16 with 34 tackles, 7 PD, 1 INT. It's really not bad numbers for a CB. He has 39 PD, 13 INT, 204 tackles over 5 years.

He's also 6'1" 195lbs. 40 yard dash was 4.39s and he posted a 36.5-inch vertical jump. He has a history of making interceptions going back to college. He was also once projected to play safety as well, so that's a possibility. He might not turn into much, but he's got some potential. Perhaps Steve can bring out the 2009 in him and not the 2013.

I'm wondering if this signing means we're not happy with whoever is considered No 5, 6 or or that Asa's injury is more serious than we think?

Well, he has to start playing at some point. He did enough to earn his spot on the team, so there's nothing wrong with giving him a chance. If the situation gets too bad maybe we can trade for another CB during the season.

Also, keep in mind that a couple of safeties (Levine and Brooks) can play nickel too... that gives us good depth at the DB position as well.

Actually I have never heard a media person mention the ravens CB depth. It would be pretty boring to talk about various teams 5 or 6 corner on TV or radio. I would say that's pretty deep analyzation. Pretty much fans and maybe se local media driven by the fans.

Yes, that would be good.

Carry Williams as a #3-6 corner? Yes please. He's just not worth the contract philly gave him. That doesn't mean he is a bad player.

Well there was the patriots center Wendell who was very good then fell completely off the map in one offseason. But he wasn't as established as Monroe. His preseason play has been surprisingly poor. I really hope he turns it on week one.

That's different though. Monroe was arguably the best player on the Jaguars' offense from 2010-2012 until he was traded in 2013. Even then, you could say he was one of if not the best OL for the Ravens last year. As you said, he's much more established.

Yes, just like we all went "who" when we signed Josh Wilson or Corey Graham. Or even when we brought up Cary Williams from the PS.

It is a solid signing. The Raven's system seems to fish potential out of anyone they bring in, so lets hope they can get the potential Cox showed in 2010 through 2012.

I think the organization is comfortable with Webb, Smith and Asa; so I am not expecting a blockbuster signing/trade. Franks, Brown and Cox will compete for the 4 and 5 backup roles (we barely put 4 CBs on the field at once), and may compete for starting time as well.

I agree with my man 1/28/01 cause I said "who?" as well!  And the 3 cats that you mentioned were all decent CB's but none of them finished their careers here have they?  Cary was a hot head that didn't want to listen to anyone including Ray Lewis.  Smh!  Corey got us a few nice picks on the way to our Super Bowl win and Josh will always have a special place in my memory for his walk-off INT/TD return vs the Texans a few years back!  Still remains to be seen how "solid" Cox will be for the Ravens.

Six foot plus zone corner in the mold of Cary/Corey added to the secondary, sounds like what I've been hoping for. I like the move and its comforting to see the Ravens quickly get back to the blueprint after Corey left. I just hope this guy plays hard and is able to play as well as those two did.

Wagner was rated our highest offensive lineman by PFF so I'm not too worried.  Monroe has been struggling but I didn't want to say anything.  Even at the level he is playing at currently he is worth his salary.  After years of Oher and McKinnie I can't complain much.  I''m happy as long as he doesn't become too terrible.  He isn't close to that yet.
