Purple Punishment

Players and in-game Assaults?

8 posts in this topic

I've always pondered this. Years back when Albert Haynesworth stepped on a guys head with his cleats and cut him all up, why wasn't Albert charged with assault and walked out of the stadium in handcuffs? There is a giant gaping line between unnecessary roughness and blatant assault. Has any player ever faced charges for blatant assault? Or are they above the law or protected from governing laws since the players union governs them on the field?

I don't think any player has ever been charged with assault. Some horrible things happen at the bottom of piles but players seem to consider it a part of the game. Remember when McGahee had his eye gouged till it bled even though he wore a visor? Crazy...

Last year, not sure what game it was, they panned into one of those piles and one player had another's family jewels and was being mean for all it was worth. I hurt for him. Remember Brady's half hearted apology for kicking Ed Reed? They would could be called assaults .

It was a thousand % intentional. Nothing happened as far as legal charges go.

without seeing the incident people get tramped on in rucks all the time. A guy laying on the wrong side will get the back tramped out of him. From first hand exp, Its sore, I've had it done and done it.

Part and parcel on the game of rugby. But you know that anyway

It was Buck Shelford having his [i don't know if I can mention that body part on these forums] torn. Nothing incidental about it, but as the saying goes, "dark things happen at the bottom of a ruck".

It is funny you say that because I saw a fellow officer get shoved on purpose during an Orioles game by a player because he was standing to close to the steps. This player could have gotten by him, but just shoved this young officer down. I was working secondary employment running the concession money down to the money room when I saw it and thought to myself, "No way I would have taken that!" He would have been placed under arrest by me, because I was hot that it happened. Trust me, it was not a push past, it was a shove, and the guy was a dirty player. The young officer let it go. I often wondered what would have happened if he would have been arrested, because no commander ever told me players are entitled to break the law on a sports field. I know several NHL players have been charged with assault in hockey games, but I don't know if it ever happened during a game. On a side note: I met an on-call judge one evening after hours at a soft ball game (between innings) to get a search warrant signed.
