All-Time NBA Draft: Discussion

I think I managed to add lot of good defense, versatility on offense and durability with Robinson and Divac. Especially this late in the draft, when everybody keeps making pretty great selections.

Needed a backup center to Hakeem. Camby's prime was in Denver. Averaged a double double there, with over 3 blocks per game in 4 of his seasons as a Nugget. Defensive player of the year in 06-07, All NBA Defensive Second Team 04-05, 05-06. All NBA Defensive First Team 06-07, 07-08.

Solid pick. Defense was underrated by others in this draft, but certainly not by you.

Now put your roster in the roster thread.

Heinsohn was my target bench defender ever since Debusschere was taken. In addition, I'm getting 21 and 10 with 8 rings from my final round selection. Not too shabby.

Most are good defenders on my team. Only Wilkins and Worthy are terrible.... :(

I didn't mean every other team neglected defense, but it is clear that defense was a specific focus for him. Considering your top two picks are up in the record books for most selections on the All-Defense teams, I'd say you're pretty good there.

It is with great regret that I have to announce this... I've asked the mods to delete my account after this game is over.. I simply cannot support an organization that seemingly doesn't give a damn about DV. Having known victims of it over the course of my life. Even if it is just a one time occurrence, the handling of the situation made everyone involved look bad. It is against my own morals to provide money to such things. Not only that, but it has made this place unbearable to be. Congrats BR Forums.. You win. I'm finally off your case.

I've been considering the same thing. You will be missed.

Well, I was planning on doing analysis of each roster for the GMs that wished for me to. Since you're already at full roster with 12 players, would you like me to go over my thoughts on your team?

SAM's Bon Jovi owned Buffalo Bills basketball team:

Starters: Jason Kidd, Kobe Bryant, Dominique Wilkins, Tim Duncan, Robert Parish

Depth: Guards - Gail Goodrich, Russell Westbrook, Mark Price (best value)

Forwards - James Worthy, Shawn Marion

Center - Bob Lanier, Ralph Sampson (biggest reach)

This is the type of team that could blowout any opponent on any given day. They have enough fundamental play and skills that they shouldn't be too inconsistent, either. Impressive first four rounds without reaching too far back in time, and then solid depth added to keep a high-scoring attack possible for 48 minutes.

Biggest strength - He's been saying it all along, it's fundamentals in the starting lineup, which will lead to consistent play. The bench is not great, but each player has a role that they can play, and the starters are more than capable of carrying the load.

Biggest weakness - The center position. Obviously, every team will be filled with very good players, but this team does not stand up against the other squads at the 5 spot.

Starters: A-     Bench: C+    Overall: B

Thanks, I think you're giving my bench too much credit.. I think my biggest reach is Westbrook seeing as Sampson did actually have a hall of fame career. Goodrich and Worthy are both good pieces off the bench.. My bench players have some good fundamentals as well.. I only have 2 true PGs, which is a bigger weakness than center, seeing as I have 3 hall of famers at center/PF. Goodrich nor Westbrook are true PGs whereas Price is...

My starting lineup can either leap out of a building or kill you with the mind. And 4/5 are good defenders. So I think that's a little overlooked... I don't see my team as the best, but we can run with anyone haha

Sampson did not have a Hall of Fame NBA career. They do not distinguish between college and pro basketball for the "Basketball Hall of Fame." Sampson is in the hall because he was the best player in NCAA for three straight years, not because he made a few all star teams early on his NBA career. I don't think Westbrook should be considered that much of a reach given how this draft went in terms of 21st Century players. I stand by my choice with Sampson and center being your weakest position, but it's all opinion.

With the 18th pick in 2014 NBA All-Time Draft, the Muppet Overdoughs select...

I believe you're up.

The pick will be in shortly. The last three rounds after this one will be voluntary, so anyone who wants out, please let it be known so that we don't wait until you're skipped.

After some deliberation, I decided to go with Chet Walker. His game was similar to that of Elgin Baylor. Notable players from his era have described him as one of the best one on one players they've played either with or against, and he was also solid on the defensive end of the floor, capable of guarding multiple positions.

Wanted another quality stretch four and I like Bosh's versatility as a small five.

I'm in for the full 15 too. ^_^

And he's got a cool-sounding name. Can't have enough of those guys on a hoops squad.

I guess I could stick around for 15. I was planning on doing a breakdown of the draft overall, including the best players not drafted after this round, but I guess that would be in poor taste now. Also, if anyone wants a breakdown of their team after this round similar to what I did for SAM, let me know. I know it's kind of stupid, but what else are we doing this for if not to try and figure out how we stack up?

I'll take a breakdown after all 15 rounds are complete if you're cool with that!

Sure. Anytime between now and then. I figured a breakdown of a full roster (12) might be preferable to some so they can see where they want to add depth in the bonus rounds.

My own personal team analysis after 12 rounds:

Starters: Earvin Johnson, Allen Iverson, Julius Erving, Bob Pettit, George Mikan (best value)

Bench: Guards - Tim Hardaway, Bill Sharman, Lenny Wilkens

Forwards - Amar'e Stoudemire (biggest reach), Tom Heinsohn

Centers - Willis Reed, Wes Unseld

It might seem to some that I've picked more from the "older" players than not, but if you really look at my lineup you see a mix of players from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s and today. My team surely isn't as big as most in this draft, but I can burn the floor with speed second to none. I waited until round four to get my first big, then ended up going 4/5s with five consecutive picks. That wasn't the plan, but I couldn't believe the names that were falling to me. First of all, to be able to land Pettit and Mikan, two charter members of the Mt. Rushmore of the NBA, after waiting was astonishing. Then, I got Reed and Unseld, two many who know the game consider to be among the top 10-12 centers in history. Stoudemire may have been overkill, but his numbers and dominance while in Phoenix were something I couldn't look past. All five of these guys can play 4 or 5, and then I still ended up with Heinsohn at the end who can do the same. What could have been a weakness became a clear strength.

Biggest Strength: I've already touched on it, but I think it's my depth and versatility at the 4/5. I can gang rebound, defend, bang it down low if need be, or even just use all the fouls I have and be a nuisance to the other bigs. I also like my depth at guard, so that will also give me versatility.

Biggest Weakness: Dr. J is my only true 3. This could prove a problem if playing a Bird, James or Drexler when he's having an off night or needs a breather. I would just have to see how the game is going and use my versatility on the bench to manage this. If the speed factor is working, Hardaway, Sharman and/or Wilkens can come in and create a 3-guard lineup to keep the track meet up and exhaust the competition into admission. If I'm getting killed on the boards or beat up down low, I surely have the option of playing three of my 4/5 guys at once to balance that scale, as well. The fact that A.I. can go 40+ easy without losing steam also provides me with versatility. He can't bang with the bigger 3s, but he can work their stamina on the defensive end by running and dribbling around without letting up, and he can quickly have those guys find themselves in foul trouble.

I won't give my self grades because there's an obvious bias, but anyone else is welcome to be as harsh as they like. I will say that I made my board primarily from three separate lists. The first is the Top 50, which I've already discussed. Magic, Dr. J, Pettit, Mikan, Sharman, Wilkens, Reed and Unseld are on that list. The second is the list from the game I shared a while back on here containing the names of the 40 players drafted between 1969 (Alcindor) and 2003 (James) that have at least 5 All Star appearances, 3 All NBA selections (1st or 2nd team) and 15,000 points. Magic, Dr. J, A.I., Stoudemire and Hardaway are a part of that 40. (You should all check out that game I linked, too, which will give you a better (or worse) appreciation for some of the picks made earlier.) Many of my players were also on my third list, which was Bill Simmons All-Time NBA player pyramid. He used advanced statistics and playoff performances to rank the top 96 (why stop at 96?) players of all time (2010). Heinsohn was the highest rated player left on that list when I picked last (and he was so for a number of rounds before the last). Here's a link to that list if anyone's interested or if you'd like to find a few more names to research for the final three rounds. (This site is a great site to research all players young and old.)
