First hurricane to hit Florida since 2005(Wilma) currently about to make landfall. Not particularly strong but the U.S. mainland hasn't been hit with a hurricane for a couple years now(due in large part to some inactive seasons with el nino going on).

We had 7.1 quake hit 100K off the East Cape (NZ) early this morning. I slept through it (it hit 4:30 AM) but they say it was felt throughout North Island.

The rain in Tampa was actually worse yesterday than it was today. Wind is blowing like crazy right now though.

Don't know if anyone has been paying attention to the weather lately but China is currently getting hit by Typhoon Meranti. Thankfully it has weakened after grazing Taiwan to a category 2 equivalent hurricane.  It was a lot stronger in the past couple days however as it had 1 minute sustained winds of 190 miles per hour and was a clear equivalent to a category 5 hurricane. An absolute monster of a storm.

Image result for itbayat meranti

Also check out this image of an island in the Philippines surrounded by the eye of the storm at it's peak. Not a fun place to be for the nearly 3,000 residents. Will be anxious how bad the damage is there in particular.

Update: Somehow there were no deaths in the Batanes region that got hit when the storm was at it's strongest. China got hit hard though.

Also got a new hurricane to keep track of in the Atlantic. Looking likely it will hit the Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti area this weekend. Tough to tell where it goes after that as there is a lot of uncertainty about how much it will turn to the north.

Edit: Yeah this storm is blowing up right now. Probably going to turn into a major hurricane

Flat tires are fun...

That's why I have AAA. Can't beat it for emergencies, especially considering how much I drive.

Yep that's what I used today.  Beats having to get down and do it myself as long as there's not a time crunch of course.

So we now officially have the first category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic since 2007 in hurricane Matthew. Jamaica and Cuba looking likely to be hit with the Bahamas next and potential for an east coast U.S. landfall. If the storm tracks east of where it is forecast, the U.S. can rest easy but Haiti could get clobbered. This is still a really tough one to get a gauge on but it is going to be pretty bad for somewhere.

As depressing as it was to watch the Ravens lose like that and the Steelers win like that, reading the candidates' profiles to try and vote for a mayor is a soul-destroying experience. Talk about slim pickins'.

I was talking about that with someone else here. It makes that South Park episode about the two candidates* seem way too real, haha.

The incumbent just threw a lot of buzzwords like "growth", "strategic focus", "community" and "future" together without actually saying anything, his main rival is a known tosspot whose plan is an absolute fantasy if he's lucky but at least he has a plan, one of the candidates is a guy who seems to only be running because he's going through a midlife crisis, and the other's a lady who's running on a really really specific pet issue. I'm honestly getting tempted to try and get back into news reporting - I feel like I could have had a field day grilling these clowns and it's making me kinda miss it.

*Both words get censored here for some reason, but if you know the episode you know what I mean.

Save yourself and stay out. Recently got into it and the only thing worse than the money is the pols that are apparently oblivious to their own stupidity

There's a reason I got out when I did. It was either Colorado or Arizona, which was significantly cheaper to find an apartment in.. But I came here because the people are alot nicer and tbh.. I'd rather deal with snow than extreme heat?

I hate the cold. I also hate the cost of living here while I make good money, you just get nothing for your dollar here.  But all the years ive been here, there  has never been any type of catastrophic event.  Oh yea, I hate the cold.  like, really hate the cold.

Yeah, I've been in there before and now I'm a step or two up in the production chain (doing the editing and headlines and all that). Politicians are a mixed bag - some are like talking to a block of cheese but there are others who genuinely love what they're doing and they want to make a difference and that comes off in the interview. I remember a really nice interview I had with the former leader of the Opposition here - he's a great bloke, just not particularly charismatic on camera and that's why he never made it beyond the Opposition.

The stuff I used to hate was making emergency service calls - calling every single police station, fire station, health board and coastguard station in the country several times a day. For a bunch of people who got paid to talk to the media, police spokesmen in particular are an antisocial bunch.

I am perpetually amazed by how horrible the police's media specialists are. Honestly useless sometimes.

Editing... Not sure I could do it. For the most part I like being at the ground level.

There are certain pols I like dealing with and certain pols that I can't stand -- and that's on both sides of the aisle. I'm in a district where all the guys are readily available and cooperative but there's one or two that are just... kind of intolerable.

I'm assuming it's more or less the same over there, but here they have a very insular culture and I think a lot of them feel really uncomfortable talking if they don't think their rank is high enough. You can see where they're coming from and things are improving, but it's still frustrating to deal with. Especially knowing they're probably getting paid more than you, hahaha.

I don't mind doing the editing side of things, I feel I have a good mind for it and I love being able to work from home with the dog sleeping at my feet all day. I wouldn't mind part-timing a little front-line stuff again though. The local papers here don't bother covering council meetings or anything local politics, and I think they're missing a trick.

So my uncle has decided to stay where he was, just a few miles from Daytona Beach, One of the potential landing spots of Matthew...

IN HIS MOBILE HOME!

Not smart although it appears Matthew is trending east so he may have dodged a bullet.
