What was the bigger mistake?

Brandon Flowers was not going to accept to be  our number 3 cornerback . He wanted to be a  number 1 cornerback and he felt like he had the ability to do so which is understandable. Flower wanted to stay in the same division as his former team which is  why he signed with The Chargers and he has a  good chance of getting paid pretty well after this season  as their number 1 cornerback.

Ozzie would have  had to put up some serious dough for Flowers to throw aside all his desires and wants to sign with our team..

Why wouldn't Flowers want to play for a superbowl contender? Enlighten me please!

You not going to find too many players out there willing to take less money only because  the so called team looks like  a super bowl contender.I'm sure just about every player wants to win a super bowl but at the end of the day it's about getting paid and making sure you are straight financially in the future. This is a business and players love to get paid especially at the value  their agent/themselves believe.

I like to believe that every player has pride and because of that some players are just not willing to accept a reduce role no matter how good the team is.Some players will evening turn a team down  that's offering the most money because they are not offering him the opportunity to be a full time starter.

If you are only counting boldins time in Baltimore you are really overrating him. He was never a number one target for this team. He was for a brief period pre-Fitzgerald in Arizona and arguably a number one for San Francisco. But only until the bigger difference maker Crabtree returned. Boldin is just a good complimentary receiver. Like an Alvin Harper. He's no hall of game transcendent talent. At least smith sr can say he was in the top 5 receivers in the league for several years.

I think his playoff performance says otherwise. Then you say he was never a number one target when he was for most of his career. He was a number one pre Fitz and part of a two number one receiver tandem once Fitz got there. He caught 102 passes in 14 games, you out of your mind? He led the Ravens in receiving for three years and despite what you believe Torrey Smith was not the number one option in that offense. He served as a deep threat decoy/playmaker but Boldin was the real number one. When you needed a first down we weren't looking for Torrey Smith. Torrey still isn't a true number one yet in my opinion but just from what you typed i can see we don't see eye to eye on that.

Boldin was on pace to put up HOF type numbers before he came to Baltimore. Just doing a quick check on his stats reveals a number of NFL records for fastest to 200-600 receptions and 5th fastest to 7000 receiving yards. As soon as he got into the Baltimore offense all that slowed down dramatically because of how we play, not him. He caught around 57-65 passes a year with us while his lowest with any other team is the 54 passes he caught in 10 games with the Cards during an injury year. As soon as he went to SF his total receptions jumped up by 20 receptions.

i thought you had a great point... then you didnt. smh.

please people, bobby raineys career probably would have been ended by injury if he was playing behind our line. i cannot believe people are actually still mentioning this ridiculous nonsense, bobby rainey is a joke and will never be more than a career journeyman struggling to make a team as a backup, and for good reason, hes a mop compared to the starting RB on all 32 nfl teams, probably a mop compared to the 2nd string on about half of the teams.

bobby rainey would have done nothing but made our total rushing averages way worse, thank god we had very good RBs who could overcompensate for their own injuries and pitiful OLINE play.

I thought you were complimenting me ... then you didn't smh.

Ray Rice didn't have any burst last year due to his weight and hip etc. Pierce trying to shoulder the load couldn't pun intended. My thoughts are not Rainey would've set the world on fire but he was a little quicker and healtier than those two plus he could catch the ball out of the backfield. Having him here would've given our offense some more life than we had. He had more speed than Rice last year and was healthier than Pierce. he could've and would've gotten us more than 1 yard a carry. I just said 3 yard not 4 or 5 or him getting over a thousand yards.

I also said if we cut Trawick for that last roster spot and kept Rainey that Jacoby would'nt have gotten hurt our first game. Remember Trawick ran into his knee. We were up at the half any by keeping Jacoby on the field we may have been able to eek out that game by being able to extend drives instead of three and outs that kept our gassed defense on the field. That was my point not Rainey being all world just decent/good enough to help our offense in some capacity or at the very least keeping Jacoby healthy by not having Trawick on the field that day.

Letting Dilfer walk after the Superbowl....or letting Boldin walk after the Superbowl.

Both I think were extremely valuable. Dilfer alittle more under appreciated.

Post-Dilfer we still ended up a playoff team. Post -Boldin we were one game short.

What team do u think had a better shot of repeating if they kept said player?

For once I agree. I love Flacco, but he needs a go to receiver (heck, most qbs do, and that's not a bad thing). Boldin did nothing but straight out ball for us and we rewarded him by asking him to take a pay-cut. Smh.

Taking Heap after SB instead of Brees

Right, because Brees would have automatically duplicated his success in Baltimore, and Flacco is such a hardship. I mean, all the guy has done is won a butload of games, regular season and post season, and won a superbowl, was named the mvp in the superbowl, and has only had one bad year to date. Every year before last year he performed average to above average. In face, he's won head to head matchups against every elite qb he's ever faced except the only true choice at qb that I'd take over Flacco, and that's Aaron Rodgers. (He also lost to Favre in 2009 because a botched field goal ruined a triumphant comeback led by Flacco.) And in most of those matchups, he played well as or better than the opposing qb.

I'm sorry, I respect you as a poster, but that comment just disgusted me.

People need to let Boldin go. I don't understand the fascination with him to this day. He disappeared in games just like the rest of our WRs.

He wouldn't have made us any bettee last year any better considering the additions made with his money.

And what do all the receivers have in common?  Joe Flacco throwing them the ball.

I don't know how you can say Boldin disappeared in game.  He was usually in the middle of the field wide-open waving his hand in the air wondering where in the hell Flacco was looking.  And yeah, he'd pitch a fit when he had a linebacker on him and wasn't thrown to.  If you go back and watch any games on NFL Rewind, it's not easy to miss.

We'll see how Smith reacts once he's missed a few times after getting open.  He last team probably still has the bruises to tell the tale.

I'm sorry, but defending taking a tight end over a franchise QB is disgusting on all accounts. Don't be mad just because someone brought up another QB that is not named Flacco.

I think his point was that would Brees be the same guy in New Orleans if he spent his career here?

Probably not considering the caliber of defenses we play, the style of offense the Ravens have historically run, and the fact that we won't automatically get 9 games a year in a dome.

Basically what Berad said is what I was trying to convey. Also, Brees wasn't even sniffing the HOF until his 8th season when he topped 5000 yards the first time, and even then no one talked about it as a fact until the Super Bowl win and the actual breaking of the passing record 2-3 years later. Before that his play and his stats were either in tune or slightly above that of Flacco's play and stats, and he played in a much better system with better weapons. So one can't say for fact that Flacco can't also soon have this sort of ascension because he's only in year 7 and btw, he's already won a Super Bowl which Brees needed almost twice as much time to do as Flacco. So saying if we'd drafted Brees instead of Heap that'd we be sitting with the same result as what Brees accomplished with two different teams and a genius OC as a head coach here in Baltimore against the AFC North with our system in our weather is not only a gross overreach, it's just plain wrong. It's not out of the realm of realistic talk to say that Flacco is working out better for us than Brees ever would have.  I don't know this for sure, but it's not something anyone can say with certainty.

LOL, it disgusted you? Wow.

So having a QB in 2001 instead of waiting until 2008 disgusts you? Good to know. We can comment on EVERY position on the team but if we talk about QB, it is hating? I would of loved to see what we could do with a QB in 2001-2004 when our defense was still pretty damn good.

I will take more titles over any player, nothing against Joe, we just didn't have a QB for 7 years after we won our first SB.

Brees is great enough that he could have changed the culture himself and his talent translates to multiple offenses. He has been at skill levels Flacco just won't ever reach and is a totally different QB. This same argument you see all the time here, "this hall of fame QB wouldn't be as good in Baltimore" and we are all entitled to our opinion but the fact of the matter is those guys are great enough to demand better for the offense, get it, and then back it up. Those guys can push back on the coordinators and run the offense they way they see fit at times. Those guys can shoulder more responsibility on a consistent basis.

Yes mr hater, I would like if you stop hating on Flacco and it would be good of you to remember Flacco is now our deity. Any discussion of QBs before or after Flacco is blasphemy. Lets keep the conversation about Flacco please or just not talk about QBs at all if you have nothing Flacco positive to say.

Well despite that "fact" he put up comparable production to Flacco while he was in San Diego (with no culture change) and was not what he became in New Orleans with Sean Payton and Pete Carmichael.

It's more about talent, responsibility, and skill than production, also Flacco still hasn't had a good a year as Brees' 2004 season( when he was still a charger). The closest he got was the 2010 season where he shouldered a greater load and played very well, something that hasn't happened in a season since. Brees also didn't magically become this amazing QB just by moving to the Saints, just like he didn't really regress once Sean Payton got suspended, despite everyone in the world knowing the was going to throw the ball on nearly every down. We drafted Joe because we know the Ravens offense will best utilize his strengths and mask his weaknesses, and it's gotten us a ring, but guys like Brees,Manning, and Arod transcend systems and offensive philosophies.

Don't know how you can make the transcendent argument for Brees when he's only excelled in one system. I'd be interested to see if anyone, even the guys who signed him as a FA in New Orleans, believe he was the same QB with the Chargers that he became with the Saints. He revamped his career, got into a very pass-friendly system, and has favorable conditions over half of the year as well.

Brees is an awesome QB and HOFer for sure now but he was just 'good' in San Diego.

Also, he did regress when Payton was not there:

2011: 71.2% completion, 8.3 yards/attempt, 7.0% TD, 2.1% INT, 110.6 QBR

2012: 63.0% completion, 7.7 yards/attempt, 6.3% TD, 2.8% INT, 96.3 QBR

Basically all of those numbers went back up once Payton was reinstated in 2013.

well since he did alright under Cameron's system in San Diego, I am sure Billick would of been able to put him in a successful system as well....

Point is, if you let Dilfer go, you take a QB, not another TE.

You don't know that. Look at the difference between Sanchez on the Jets as opposed to how he is doing on the Eagles, the system can make all the difference in the world and as said we signed a guy in FA.

Again, You DONT KNOW HE WOULDNT. He is a hall of fame QB right now and QB was a need after the super bowl. Obviously we will never know.. what was Heap?! He could of succeeded elsewhere.
