NFL to Give Harsher Penalties for Domestic Abuse?

20 posts in this topic

Well, well well. Mr. Goodell can crack under public pressure for this but the public absolutley hates the defensive rules and does nothing to change them.

After public criticism of the Rice suspension, it seems the league may stiffen the penalties in the future to please the critics. This happens to come after the Maine Governer threatened an NFL boycott for not giving Rice a stricter penalty.

Per the AP, LePage argued last week in a radio interview that Rice should have been suspended for three years.  LePage also believes that the Ravens should have responded to his violence with violence of their own.

Says the guy in a re-election year. LOL at that last sentence, so an answer to violence is more violence? Right... great job contradicting yourself.

“A lot of us were disturbed by what we saw [regarding Rice],” the person said. “I think you will see something in probably the next few weeks. A first offense could be four to six games, definitely more than two. A second offense might be a year.”

Nice one Goodell, let others tell you how to do your job.

What's Maine?

I heard it was a chemical that goes into bread, but I could be wrong.

Good, go for it NFL. Rice got one of the heaviest punishments for a first-time domestic violence incident and to many it was not enough; countless others have gotten off free.

However, shouldn't the legal system have stricter punishments if this is how so many people feel?

The legal system should have stricter punishments, but I don't think they will come until the public complains enough.

The people only care about professional athletes of the NBA and NFL. I haven't seen ESPN touch the War Machine issue yet that was 1 billion times worse than Ray's incident. I havent even heard about Hardy's DV issue only Ray's.

Just read about "War Machine" wow, that's disgusting.

Greg Hardy, same deal and he was actually convicted.

BUT the media didn't have a video to proliferate and run over and over. They say a picture is worth 1000 words, what is a casino security cam worth? That plus Rice is a bigger name than them.

Yeah and Hardy's nickname is the Krakken

They should.  2 games for domestic violence verse 4 games for marijuana isn't fair.

Maybe the suspension for marijuana should be reduced.

I am in agreement that there should be a tougher penalty for the offense. This isn't just a Rice thing, a lot of people have gotten away without much or even any punishment from the NFL in some cases for domestic abuse all over. Now for the quote; 3 years is a bit extreme and after reading it I sincerely hope that guy doesn't get back in office with that bit about the Ravens using violence on Rice. That bit is pretty sickening. But back to Rice, I think there is more to the story than the media is portraying and hopefully justice was done for everyone involved. I think it should have been 4 games but I think with the reaction to it all in the media and all the attention it is putting on Rice in a negative light, that probably counts for something lol. Good to see the NFL focusing on tougher penalties for domestic abuse though, it has been a long time coming.

In seriousness, these are basically my thoughts. I thought they'd be working their own precedent with this case, but it looks like the next guy could feel a harsher suspension.

Yeah I think most people thought this would be the case where they would do that with the media attention and all but it is good to see they will finally take it more seriously from now on. It is about time although it is a pity people think the Rice incident is the injustice as opposed to all the other times where there has been little to no punishment from the NFL for players doing even worse things in terms of domestic abuse. Regardless of what people think on Rice, it isn't fair that he gets all the attention in this as opposed to all the other people who were hardly punished before him but I guess that is just the way the world works. Someone should put the spotlight on them though, it would be a great read.

What Ray did was wrong and he deserved the punishment from the league but if the league wants to change the length of a suspension that is fine but to add more to Rice's suspension now IMO is not appropriate since the punishment was officially handed down.

That won't happen but going forward, with the national poopstorm this has caused, the NFL has reason to come down harder.

Totally agree about the defensive rules. Why does the NFL think we want arena type scores.

"A lot of us were disturbed by what we saw", says the man who only feels sympathy if there's a video to watch.

Pictures tell a thousand words.

Love your last sentence.

The 4 games is technically a 2nd offense but domestic violence is a hundred times worse. 4 to 6 games sounds like a true punishment for 1st offense depending on what actually occurs.

I'm still wondering what it is that all these people THINK they know. Maybe I'm missing something here. I have yet to see a video of Rice "knocking out" his fiance'. When this first went down, BOTH were charged with assault. Apparently, the secured video was far less incriminating than what all these "I know what happened" idiots are spewing about.
