Interesting Dilemma for Ravens OC

58 posts in this topic

First, I think it's a matter of when Kubiak leaves, as opposed to a matter of if. On the flipside of that, I don't think it's out of the question that he sticks around for a season or two after this one. I think any Ravens fan would be thrilled with one Lombardi from his tenure here.

But the key question for me is whether we can replicate anything from his system when he moves on. It's been talked about how Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have had one offensive system between them for the duration of their careers, and really only the one OC each (or every OC has been close to replicating the first). Joe, on the other hand, is looking at his third in seven years, and likely his fourth if Kubiak chases the big job. If this system works for us, for Joe and for the personnel we have, it'd be ideal to keep as close to Kubiak's playbook as we can - for the sake of consistency in Joe's career. I hope Joe gets to master an effective system, rather than having to continually

Keeping Rick Dennison on would be huge, and I think that's Ozzie's big plan for the time being. But if Rick moves on with Kubiak, hopefully a guy like Bobby Engram will have picked up enough to run something similar and that's why I hope Kubiak stays for at least two or three seasons. I think how we replicate this system will be huge long-term.

But in the meantime, we have a franchise QB and a legit OC for the first time in Ravens history. Let that sink in and enjoy it while we have it. And let's continue our run of making the Texans look silly by turning their rejects into masterpieces. :D

I'm of the belief that Kubiak stays for three years, gets two rings, and then goes looking for another HC gig.

I remember saying, when we signed the new positional coaches, that they would be our future offensive coordinators and that they would be learning Kubiak's offense to continue after he leaves. I still think that's true.

I can be happy with that.

Re watched week 16 and 17 last night and I'm happiest about the different formations we will now use.

Those two weeks it appeared 95% of the time it was a shotgun and every run seemed to come out of the pistol formation

It's because Dick wasn't a good HC. Couldn't coach offense. Gary was a pretty good HC who was stuck with a bad GM. I never thought he was the problem.

I hear he is somewhat stubborn.  He wouldn't be a good fit at head coach here with Ozzie in my opinion.

Thats my line of thinking. Being a HC of an NFL team is very stressful, and definitely played a part in his health issues. Baltimore is a top tier organization to work for as a coach though, and less stressful with a guy like Harbaugh as the HC. If he were to leave for an HC job, he'd most likely be going to an unstable franchise. Unless an opportunity to be the HC of a top organization came up, I see him sticking around for a while.

This ^.  Does he really want a repeat of the Texans?  Spend 7 frustrating years to finally make it to the playoffs, lose twice, then go back to being the worst team in the league?  Have to deal with the politics of trying to get a long with a bad GM who doesn't know how to acquire good talent.

He only came here largely because we had a solid group on offense, (including a QB better than he's ever had) a ton of open offensive coach positions, and we gave him a lot of leeway when it came to how he wanted to impact the offense.  He will wait until the right moment to switch Franchises.

Thats what I'm saying. This is a major refreshment for Kubiak being here in Baltimore. He has a GM and Owner who get things done. A coach who let him bring along his guys for assistant coaches (something that is super rare in this league). I mean, being an OC in Baltimore is a top job. Unless San Fran, Denver ... a job like that is available, why go to another rebuild?

Joe Flacco made another of his jaw-dropping throws during 11-on-11 drills when he scrambled to his left and, with a defender in his face, threw 60 yards downfield to Marlon Brown. Brown got behind a pair of defenders, the ball hit him in stride, and he strolled in for a touchdown. Again, Flacco hasn't lost his deep-ball touch in the predominantly underneath passing game the Ravens have run.

This is from a BaltimoreSun camp report. I do hope Kubiak notices this and includes a good amount of deep passes into his playcalling. No need to be conservative, This isn't Matt Schaub.

I love Joe Flacco as much as the next homer, but even I don't think he's better than John Elway.

On the bright side the fact that we already have to talk about Kubiak possibly getting signed as a HC after this season is a good omen for the offense.

As some have said, I think Kubiak wants to be a HC again, which is really a good thing. Obviously, the better the O looks, the better he looks. As long as Harbs trusts him and lets him get aggressive in certain spots, the O could finally fly.

I can live with that. As long as he stays for long enough for us to set his system up in the longer-term.

Let kubiak walk? Promote Dennison since he knows the system?

I know, right?  We haven't even played a regular game yet...  SMH

Exactly my point. Given Gary's past health issues it would be wise for him not to jump on any first offer as a HC becuase most likely it's going to take at least 3 years for the team to be even relevent don't want him worsening his health if he wants to live a long life!

the way owen daniels spoke about him made it sound like kubiak sort of "found himself" again after going back to being an OC, daniels basically said he played for him for years and has never seen kubiak so involved and happy to be out there and teaching the players. maybe being a HC was too stressful for him and he just enjoys doing what he knows best, and thats calling the offensive plays and teaching his players how to succeed. Now, like i said, this is a paraphrased quote from daniels and i dont know how much i should buy into it, but i would like to think that is the case, and with the recent health issues, it could be plausible that he has no desire to return to the stressful job that being a HC is, and i am just hoping that is the case.

i am positive he will be getting offers the day the season ends, i am just hoping that steve can outbid those teams enough to keep kubes around.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even if Kubiak leaves, the Ravens can block another team from trying to get Dennison. The Ravens may have it planned out that if Kubiak leaves, they promote Dennison and just block all inquiries.

Yeah I don't think Kubiak leaves after one good year unless a very desirable job opens up with a good QB like a Denver, Indy, or San Fran. I think due to his health he stays at least 2 years. After that we could hopefully keep Dennison to run the offense or groom someone this year and next to run it if he decides to leave.

My guess is that Kubes will want to stick as an OC. Just a hunch............

I hope.  If we were able to actually build a staff we could keep(and not because other teams don't want them... CAM), this team can, for years, can be something special.  Remember that D word Harbaugh spoke about when he was first hired.

Happy 53rd birthday, Gary Kubiak!

I don't know what i'd do if we had a top 10 offense. I don't even let myself dream about a top 5 offense. i hope it happens we're due.

Lets see them play one regular season game then go from there...better yet after the first 3 weeks of division games we can see where this thing is going..
