Pre-season Game 1 vent/ compliment thread -- who played well-- who didn't !

Good coaches make adequate players good. Great coaches make good players great. At some point, we have to stop saying all our players just suck - which means every scout, coach, GM sucks at choosing talent - and admit Pees is lacking.

It was only one drive in one preseason game - but stopping the run was not what I expected as one of our weaknesses.

It is only the one preseason game. Before we give up completely, lets see a little more of what this new defense can do. Although I share your apprehension myself.

But I'll be willing to admit that I'm wrong in the future lol. I didn't like the pick but if he's good, then I'll accept it. I don't want the guy to fail lol

He was a good, one cut back. He didn't shy away from contact and looked to punish runners on every play. He always falls forward. I wouldn't be surprised to see him do as well with the starters after the offensive line opened holes big enough for a mack truck

Id like to vent. How is art brown not starting with smith out. Don't understand the love affair with bynes. Hopefully get to see mosley and brown start next week and get a good few series together

You failed to answer my question. I asked what could Pees have done differently. Do you know? What could he have done, schematically or philosophically, to make sure that a veteran didn't make a rookie mistake and to make sure rookies didn't make rookie mistakes?

I'll answer it for you: Nothing

Even the best coaches can't make a guy shed blocks better. All a DC can do is put each player in the best spot to succeed, and Pees did that the other night. Unfortunately, the veteran Suggs made a peewee football mistake and lost contain. Our linebackers were shaky in reading plays. Not Pees' fault. I know you like to blame Pees because it's easier to blame one person than more people, but Pees didn't make the mental mistakes that they did.

Hey, how about we give Pees props? He blitzed a LOT and he called a LOT of press coverage. I know it's frowned upon to compliment Pees, but he called a great game and he's looking a lot more aggressive. We didn't see a lot of that zone defense everyone seems to hate for some stupid reason. We saw bump and run press coverage. Why do we yell at Pees for not making sure Suggs didn't lose contain, but not compliment Pees for calling an aggressive defense?

im not sure the blitzing and bump and run will carry over into the season unfortunately

Could you tell me what Pees could have done better?

Could he have made sure Suggs, a veteran, didn't lose contain? Could he have made Mosely take better angles? That drive was so bad because the players did the little things wrong.

The defense has talent but needs some work.  Safe to say Mosley is going to have some hiccups, and players make mistakes.  But the talent and, more importantly alost, athleticism is there.

Brown hasn't been talked about much so far in training camp and right now Bynes is  probably  out playing him  at this point. I'm sure the coaches have a  good reason why they have Bynes starting over Brown .

You do know that is what coaches are there for right? Practice, practice, then practice some more. Point out boneheaded mistakes - fix them and fix them again. That is basically their job. This isn't Pees first chance - he's had plenty and we've given the defense christmas gifts each season - still we don't see a top defense.

We saw all that aggressive style last preseason too - then when the season rolled around - back to old conservative Pees. Cripes he's like our defense Cam Cameron at this point. Only one step above Mattison.

after hyde abused our edges early, did anyone pay attention to upshaw? i though he looked pretty good, played very tough and very physical, used good technique to stay in the right places and then used some serious brute strength to make children out of blockers when the time was right. i was pretty drunk last night so i couldnt tell you if he was consistent with it or anything, but i was very impressed with what i saw from him.

my marlon brown predictions seem to be coming true, although it may be too early for that, i thought he may have hit his ceiling last year and will either regress or just stay the same, he just doesnt seem to know how to use his size, lacks body control and gets t-rex arms in traffic, bad traits for a redzone/jumpball guy, and with his reports of constant drops in TC and a complete no show from him last night, its a bit concerning.

cj mosley is my man crush. he is a future first team all pro as long as he stays healthy.

i wished i couldve seen talliaferro but i had to leave early, loving what im hearing about him.

juszczyk is the real deal, owen daniels might see next to no time this year because of him, much better option, good hands, good routes, tough as nails, and DB's forced to tackle him in the open field are going to need some advil and a tub of ice afterwards.

brandon williams looked like a BEAST.

saw nothing from KLM, total bummer, maybe i just wasnt paying enough attention

didnt notice much from arthur brown

elam did a good job shooting in like a missile to prevent big plays, but didnt seem to be near the LOS like i would expect

mcphee and chykie had rough games, while asa pulled ahead.

didnt notice deangelo tyson or jernigan, which was shocking to me.

I don't think you were paying much attention to KLM, Timmy, Tyson or Mcphee because they all had strong games. I'm not sure if you were looking for splash plays from them or not but they consistently did their jobs all night. Now I will say Mcphee still has work to do to consistently set the edge outside, I think once, maybe twice he lost contain but he was constantly getting pressure all night and I loved how Pees moved him around.

KLM, Timmy and Tyson all dominated the LOS throughout the game from what I saw. I still haven't gotten a chance to really break the game down but watching the game live, all those guys played well. Timmy got really good push from the inside on the pass rush. On Mosley's sack, both Timmy and KLM took up a total of 4 blockers and that allowed CJ and Mcphee to work against 1on1 and both won their matchups. I thought those guys played great.

I'm not sure where you are going here. Trust me i'm not attacking you nor your opinion, but you say Pees job is to fix mistakes, well isn't that exactly what the first team defense did the second drive of the game? I get that the first drive was bad, but that was as close to a physically dominating performance as you can get from a preseason game without showing too much of your scheme. He moved Mcphee around all over the defense, reminded me of AD from 06, and Mcphee responded well. He did a nice job of mixing up coverage in the back end, probably because we did a great job getting pressure with the front 4. He had safeties roaming the box, he blitzed a good amount. I really can't see how he can be bashed at all for this game.

As for last year, it was tough to continue the aggressive defensive style because our offense had far too many 3 and outs. Early in the season we were very aggressive, not as much as Rex and Chuck, but aggressive style. But our defense either got tired or made mistakes in the back end. I thought Thursday night was a good start. What was it that you didn't like about the defense in the first preseason game?

Can I vent against the fans?  Give Chykie a break.  He really didn't look as bad as people are saying.

Chykie looked like he had never seen a football traveling through the air before, he was targeted twice and he not only looked completely lost trying to track the ball but he was holding his man both times. There's a reason people compare him to Frank Walker, he's constantly grabbing jersey and drawing flags and he can't track the ball in the air... total liability in coverage.

I've never had anything against Chykie, I think just about all of us badly wanted to see him succeed. But at a certain point you have to call a spade a spade, he's just not a good corner and lack of NFL experience can't be his excuse anymore coming into his 4th season.

When he came in against Pitt last year Big Ben immediately made eye contact with his wr and threw at Chykie for a TD. Opposing qb's know he's a weak link in coverage and that hasn't changed no matter how much experience he's had in the NFL. Tracking the ball is almost entirely instinctive, if he's still that lost out there in his 4th season then what we see is what we get at this point. The guy is never going to magically learn how to track the ball and it's time to give other guys a shot and end the Chykie Brown experiment.

I said at the start of camp that Chykie would have to have a lights out camp in order to make the team. Even though Ross and Webb were healthy at the time, I still stand behind that. I think at this point it's either #3 CB or nothing for Chykie. Having him as a #4 CB really does nothing for the team imo. He's not really a stand out ST in any area. I think the Ravens would be more inclined to go with Franks or a Trade/FA addition and maybe a couple of the UDFA guys. This will give the team an insurance policy against Ace maybe not being as consistently as you'd hope and Webb's injury.

Even though Chykie is busting his butt and seemingly having a bit more success then earlier in camp, I think he has to turn it on now, or he's out the door. This year's Tandon Doss.

I feel like Chykie will make the team solely on our lack of depth at the position (especially post Ross injury).

Chykie having to play meaningful snaps on defense is one of my biggest fears coming into the regular season. He will undoubtedly get flagged constantly for defensive holding/PI and get targeted over and over by opposing QB's.. I don't think I've ever seen the kid string together one strong performance in coverage even dating back to previous pre-season games against inferior offensive competition. Like I said I really wanted to see Chykie succeed but I want what's best for the team and he's just flat out a major liability for us when he's on the field. I really hope we make another move at cb soon because Chykie is only going to detriment this defense if his number get's called.

How many plays, how many games, how many years before this coaching staff just accepts that he's not a good corner because he completely lacks the intangible skills for the position..We need to look else where for depth at cb and I can't help but think that the re-reinforcements just aren't coming. Man do I wish we re-signed Corey Graham, I'm a huge Asa Jackson supporter but we have to realize injuries happen and cb has absolutely no depth outside the top 3.

He was as bad as Jimmy was 2 years ago.  He had pretty solid coverage but needs to learn to play the ball better.

Say the same thing about Jimmy Smith...Guy couldn't track the ball at all and constantly let up big plays because of it.   A year later and he looks like he will be one of the next best corners in the league.

I'm not seeing it.  As rough as Chykie played, I don't see many better options out there.

Seriously? Ace was lights out. Even against Boldin in the slot, which was only like two plays, but that kid balled. I thought even before the game Ace should have been ahead of Chykie and definitely feel that way now.

I thought Jacobs and Franks played much better then Chykie, although against 3rd teamers. Both did a much better job in press and off man. Both played the ball in the air better. Didn't see Franks tackle much, but I know Jacobs did a really good job of tackling and not allowing YAC. Actually the only knock on both was that Jacobs allow David Reed to get inside of him on a 4th and 2. And for Franks he dropped an seemingly easy INT, it was hard to tell because they were interviewing Joe and didn't show a replay.

Honestly I like what I saw from Olatoye as well. At least with Jacobs and Olatoye I know they are still developing. This was their first NFL game, but it was Chykie who looked like the rookie. I think he's on thin ice. We'll see how this week in practice goes and how the game goes Saturday.

It's a lot of inexperience though, and that's my real issue.  While Franks, Jacobs, and Olatoye played well, will they be the same against tougher competition?  I've heard a mixed bag from camp reports.  Franks has apparently had a very bad camp even on the 3rd team.  Jacobs and Olatoye both got reps with the 1s at some points during camp and also struggled.  I'm not a Chykie fan at all, but I don't see how he's not the #4 CB come September.

Say the same thing about Jimmy Smith...Guy couldn't track the ball at all and constantly let up big plays because of it.   A year later and he looks like he will be one of the next best corners in the league.

Only time Jimmy really had issues playing the ball was his rookie year. After that he always showed the signs that he would be good, people just wondered if he'd ever be the shutdown guys we heard about. Injuries really limited Jimmy Smith. That's not the case with Chykie. I will continue to say it, much like Doss he is at the point of his career where he needs to show and prove. Potential won't cut it for him any more.

Harbs has continually shown that he won't cut guys around because of "lack of depth" at the position. Did we really have depth at WR last year when Doss was cut? We were basically in the same position as we are in now. Torrey and Coby at the top with a bunch of unproven guys behind them. Brown and Mellette showed promise and Doss was out the door after a couple lackluster preseason games.

I'm seeing the same with Chykie. Both Jacobs and Olatoye played pretty well, along with Franks behind Ace. I'm not saying any of those guys will be a star or anything but if they continue to play better then Chykie, he's gone imo. Next week will tell a lot. This is around the same time Marlon Brown started to flash last season. If one of those young guys steps up, I wouldn't be surprised to see them start taking first team reps. If Chykie is forced to share snaps in the 3rd preseason game, it's won't be good for him.

Ridiculous comparison. Jimmy Smith was a clear cut 1st round talent who would've gone in the top 20 had it not been for his off field question marks. Chykie was a long term project when we drafted him. The differential in natural ability, physical tools, and intangibles for the position is immense between those 2.

What experience did we have at WR last year when Doss was cut? That was my biggest argument for Doss making the team was because he at least had experience with the offense and could possible help fill the void left by both Boldin and Pitta.

It's tough to listen to reports on camp because those guys see snippets of practice. No different then when you visited. Imagine having to get a true assignment on how a guy look every play of every practice. It's impossible to the naked eye. So you take portions of practice to watch certain guys. That's why even coaches watch the tape of practice. But now those guys have strong "game tape" to break down against other opponents. I don't think he skates by on "at least he's experienced".

Torrey, Stokley, Jacoby, Deonte, even LaQuan. I'll be more on board if Jacobs and Olatoye can elevate themselves to get some 1st team reps, but as of right now, I don't see any way that Chykie is cut.  The FA market is bare.  It's more of a wait and see thing for me.

Deonte and LaQuan had a total of like 10 career catches between the both of them. That's solid depth in your opinion? Stokley got his old jersey number and AARP card on the same day. But seriously, I don't see how the WR position from a year ago differs any from the CB position now.

I can understand why you say wait and see, and I agree. I'm not saying cut Chykie now. What i'm saying is he'll have to step his game up in order to make the team. He will not make this team on the strength of being depth. Brown himself along with Asa has been "depth" for the last 2-3 season as young inexperienced guys, I can't see why Harbs would not be hesitant to allow young guys like Jacob and Olatoye the opportunity to be depth for this team. Thursday Night opened a lot of doors for the CBs, its up to them to take full advantage of the opportunity. If they do, and Chykie continues his up and down play, he's out imo.

It's not like Doss had that many catches himself.  7 total receptions before we cut him.  At least Chykie has played a considerable amount of snaps in the past few years.

i think the big thing with cutting Chykie is that you'd be cutting him and letting 3 question marks comprise the #3, 4, and 5 slots.  Chykie is a question mark himself, but he's shown flashes in the past at least.  I'm all for giving those other guys that opportunity to get some reps and see if they can handle it. but I've seen nothing to this point that would convince me that they could be any better than Chykie.  At least we've seen something positive from Chykie in the past, whereas these other guys are complete unknowns at this point.

I'm not saying that you're wrong.  It's just not a Ravens type of move.  I don't see it as comparable to the Doss situation.

If Chykie is forced to share snaps in the 3rd preseason game, it's won't be good for him.

Don't feed me that crap.  Asa Jackson is clearly better, no doubt.  Franks and Olatoye were playing 3rd and 4th string players while Chykie was filling in for Webb. Can't compare how well they did.

Jimmy was crap his first few years.  We all knew he had the potential and it was going to take time.  Homers loved to talk about how good he was.  He wasn't good, but he showed improvement game after game which is why we knew he would be good.

Chykie has looked better the more he is on the field.  Now he is up against better talent and is struggling a bit.  He shouldn't be filling in for Webb anyway.  As a number 4 guy Chykie is pretty good.

Ridiculous comparison. Jimmy Smith was a clear cut 1st round talent who would've gone in the top 20 had it not been for his off field question marks. Chykie was a long term project when we drafted him. The differential in natural ability, physical tools, and intangibles for the position is immense between those 2.

How is it ridiculous?  Richard Sherman was a fifth round pick.  These guys are people, not numbers.  I'm comparing their play on the field.  That's what matters.

EDIT: Stop downvoting every post I make just because I have a different opinion than you.  It's immature.  Besides, I'm correct more often than not.

Oh I know you aren't saying I'm wrong, and you know personally I don't have an issue with either being wrong or admitting I was wrong(unfortunately).

Has Chykie and Asa not been question marks over the last 2-3 years? How is this different. Nobody knew what Graham could do, most thought he was just a ST guy before getting snaps at CB. Our depth at Chykie hasn't been solid for the past several years. Right now every body outside of Jimmy and Webb are question marks. I think we are sadly mistaken if Chykie continues to get out played and we keep him in the name of him showing a flash or two before.

Also another thing I've noticed from my day at camp and now the preseason game. The Ravens are more then comfortable with their Safeties covering in the slot. On many occasions Thursday night I saw, either Omar Browns, Miles or Brooks(not as much) in the slot with the second team defense. Now I don't know if having 3 Safeties on the field was just to give those guys a chance to stand out or what, but they looked good. Chykie is far from a lock to me.
