Future NFL team relocations

I would rather see the Rams go back to Los Angeles than to see a joint stadium with the Raiders and Chargers as tenants - for that matter, I believe that a joint stadium featuring the Rams and Chargers would be acceptable.

One has to move to the NFC aka Jets/Giants.

Imo LA doesn't deserve a team but SD and Oakland need to step up to the plate.

That wouldn't be a bad idea if they did a joint stadium. With the Rams pretty much at this point set to go to LA, just do a Raiders/Rams swap. Keep the Chargers in the West, the rivalry with the Broncos and some of the conference rivals is too good to mess with. Move the Rams to the AFC West and the Raiders to the NFC West.

I agree LA doesn't deserve a team but now it's one step closer from happening. According to the LA Times, the Inglewood City council approved a stadium plan at Hollywood Park, the same site that Stan Kroneke wants the Rams stadium to be built in LA.

Oh gosh...the Raiders and the 49ers in the same division? That could get ugly.....

I suspect it would get that way, Dom - were it to come to pass.

I couldn't help but laugh at this. Per PFT, NFL will discuss selling tickets in L.A. before any confirmed move to city.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/06/report-nfl-to-discuss-selling-tickets-in-l-a-before-any-confirmed-move-to-city/

This had me laughing as well. Money grubbing  ...

The only way to express interest is by sending us money in advance without knowing which team or when and where a stadium is to be built. You can put your mind at ease that your hard earned money will be put to good use making money for the NFL while you patiently wait for the stadium to be built. Rest assured, should you have a change of heart. the money is 100% refundable.

Yeah, right. Thanks, but no thanks.

(sarcasm)

The only suitable temporary home that's shown interest is the L.A. Coliseum, but only for one team for a year or so.  Rose Bowl, Angels Stadium aren't interested.  Dodgers Stadium can't fit a football field and the Stubhub Center in Carson, home of the MLS Galaxy is too small at 28,000.   No one wants the Raiders due to the crowd they bring.

If that's the case, Ram and Chargers it is.

After reading some of the posts in this thread, I suspect that both the Rams and the Chargers would be moving the minute the season is over; should the referendum on a new stadium in San Diego go down badly, and the Chargers lose, then the Spanos family would be eager to load eight suitcases and eight moving vans to head up Interstate 5 to Los Angeles.

As for the Rams, I suspect that Kroenke will most likely announce his plans after the final home game of the regular season.

Should this happen, then I suspect the Rams would play their home games in the Coliseum for a year or two, and the Chargers would use the Rose Bowl for a year or two in an agreement with UCLA and the Tournament of Roses.

I welcome your comments.

The Rams went to the Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, CA for joint practices and the pictures show thousands of Rams fans, it was either 3 to 1 or 4.  Los Angeles Rams banners, even a giant Stan Kroenke head.    The proposed new Rams stadium in Inglewood has room for a second home team locker room, so they could share it.  The stadium is scheduled to break ground in December..  There will be at least one LA next season, I predict, which one I don't know.

This is a little different from Baltimore in 1995, not only Modell and the Browns were interested in coming here, but the Buccaneers and Cardinals who played 10 years in a college stadium considered this town..   Maryland Stadium Authority head John Moag went with Modell's organization because of their track record, had he not moved, rumor was that Al Davis would have left LA for Charm City.

Wow, I did not know that. I remember the interest from the Buccaneers and Cardinals though.

The other rumor was their made their pitch to Davis in 1995 and he refused.

The Bucs and Cardinals, I got from John Steadman's book From Colts to Ravens about Baltimore Pro Football history.  You can get a copy in decent condition cheap from Amazon.

That's good stuff.

Could you imagine the Baltimore Buccanners?   Nice ring to the name, no tie to the city's culture tho'.  One Super Bowl and then a long time of neglect by the ownership.  Steelers would've killed that team every season in this division.

How about the Baltimore Cardinals?  Another bird team, but again, no real tie to the city's culture.  One Super Bowl appearance and a lot of "suck" in between.  Wonder if Arians would've became the HC anyway if the Cards were in Bmore?

The Baltimore Raiders?  No ring to the name, no tie to the local culture, a crazy, egomaniac owner followed by his incompetent son.  No name change would've been likely either if he accepted the offer.  One SB appearance and a horrid string of losing seasons since. As a former Raiders fan from their golden age (long before the Ravens) let me just say, "No Thanks!".

All in all the 12 years of NFL perdition for Baltimore worked out quite well in the end.  It sucked during that "non-era" but look what we have now.  Wouldn't change a thing.

The Cardinals had two shots at moving to Baltimore.  1986 where the Bidwell family voted on relocating the team from St. Louis and Bill Bidwell decided to go to Arizona because it was warmer than here.  There were a few "Baltimore Cardinals" t-shirts printed up.  The second was in the mid 90s, when they were unhappy playing in Arizona State's stadium.   Had they came here, the band would have had to play "The Cardinals are a charging" their fight song.

Heard Charm City was the runner up to get Rams from LA in the mid 90s instead of St. Louis.

In the meantime, I went to several Baltimore Stars games in College Park, mostly because people were dumping their tickets.  They never played in town and still practiced in Philly, every game was a road game for them that year.  They should have at least let them use the old Colts practice facility in Owings Mills so they would have a presence in the area.

Went to the Stallions games wearing my CFL Colts T-shirt a lot of the time.

Interesting.  I used to go to the Stallions games too, got go on the field to meet players during warm ups and sat in the mezzanine seating.  I was so bummed when the Ravens came and the city dumped the Stallions like yesterday's news despite their success, that I was not a Ravens fan until 1999.  Ray Lewis had caught my attention.  Still I was at the very first home game at M$T (PSI NET) Stadium.

I wasn't in Bmore when the Stars played and my great uncle was a minor owner in the Federals at the time anyway.  Including the Colts, all these teams have won at least one Championship for Baltimore, the only city that can this has occurred.  There are many cities with great football traditions and champion teams, but for Baltimore's distinction I feel this is the greatest best football city (not just NFL) in the country.

I went to couple of Federals games, back in 1984 was that a local car dealer who had the nickname "Mr. Nobody" thought about buying them and moving the team to Baltimore.  First the Feds were sold and going to Miami, under the nickname "The Spirit of Miami" and the U's coach Howard Schenellberger signer to the same duties., the move to the fall forced them to be sold again and going to Orlando.

I'm guessing Stan Kroennke won't care for this but the city of St. Louis has lined up a Stadium sponsor for their new stadium in an effort to keep the Rams in St. Louis. National Car Rental has reached a deal with the St. Louis Regional Sports Authority woth $158M over 20 years. This deal did not involve Stan nor anyone with the Rams.

So either St. Louis has a Plan B team(Raiders?) or this is their last ditch effort to try to sway Stan from moving the team to LA.

From what I understand, its been assumed by league "insiders" for quite some time that TWO teams will be in LA, as early as next season.

Most likely candidates are Rams and Raiders, though I believe the Chargers are technically still a possibility. I believe its down to those three only from what I've read.

Some fans in San Diego are worried that the Chargers are going to move to LA  there is no talk about a new stadium and Qualcomm Stadium is a dump but not as bad as Oakland.

Heck, there was a lot more Steelers fans than Chargers fans on MNF. That's usually the case. Raiders fans say that Qualcomm is home away from home. Don't get me started when the Broncos come to town.

Fans are worried? Really? Worried about the Chargers leaving San Diego, they in fact beg to differ. By they I mean the people of San Diego. Comic-Con got a 2 year extension through 2018 but had an opt out clause to move Comic Con out of San Diego after 2016. The San Diego Union-Tribune polled their readers(July 2015 Poll) on who they rather keep, Comic-Con or the Chargers. There were 5,299 votes. 61% said they prefer to keep Comic-Con over the Chargers who only had 38% of the vote. When a 4 day event that is held once a year feels more of a priority to people than having a NFL team, something is wrong.

That's saying something. And just like my previous post, look at the crowd for their home games. It's usually split 50-50 between Chargers fans and visiting teams (some more than others).

There was a rumor after the 1984 USFL season that "Mr. Nobody" who owned Town and Country Nissan was interested in buying the Federals so he could move them to Baltimore,   Instead they were going to move to South Florida as the Miami Spirit with Howard Scehllenberger as the Head Coach, when the move to the fall was announced the team was sold to Real Estate developer Don Dizney and relocated to Orlando as the Renegades with Lee Corso as Head Coach.

Remember...I did say Some not All. The Die Hard Charger fans would make that trip up the I-5 to L.A. to watch them play.

I hope no teams move. It sucks for any fan base. I like the teams where they are. I like the Rams in St. Louis.

Yep. We lost the Colts to greed, obtained the Ravens from greed. 3 franchises now trying to line their pockets with an LA deal, it just isn't right.

Being "Old School" ... I have no problem with the Rams being in LA. I'd rather that than the Chargers.

However ... St. Louis deserves a team. Too bad it can't be the Cards and strip that team in Pheonix of the name ... call them the tumble weeds or something else.

Honestly, the Jags feel like the most expendable franchise (from a fan support and history perspective). I'm not sure why they were ever granted a franchise and why they aren't in the discussion for a move.

Here's one reason why....yes, art Modell of all people was involved....
