Verizon Wireless to Throttle Unlimited Data Users

18 posts in this topic

If you're like me and tend to stream the NFL Network or Red Zone a lot and you're not on wi-fi, you tend to use a lot of data.  Well apparently Verizon Wireless hates us and wants to make us stop doing that:

I'm annoyed, especially since they're trying to force you to only use Wi-Fi or pay extra money for one of their shared data plans.  Never mind that just to stream the NFL Network you have to pay an extra charge every month anyway.

Communications (including internet) is a huge rip, regardless. All of the companies - Verizon, AT&T, Cox, COMCAST, etc - are in on it. The service they provide, in many cases, is good but charged at an extreme premium.

Verizon does hate those unlimited users. Kudos to everyone who kept that plan, I stand with you in fighting the man.

And they're allowed to do it. The threat to meet neutrality should alarm everyone way more than it does.

Yeah, I've been doing it as long as possible, but now I'm voting with my wallet and going elsewhere.  T-Mobile and Sprint are looking good right now.

T Mobile seems to be the one that screws its customers over the least. I'll be making the switch when my contract is up.

Still have my first personal contract With unlimited data that I got when I was 16...

So used to it I'm scared to get rid of it even though it'd be cheaper to

Same here, as soon as my contract is up in Feb I'm switching to T-Mobile. My parents want me to stay on the family plan but I just can't do it as long as it's with Verizon. Verizon no longer offers unlimited data which is so stupid since unlimited data is the future. Plus T-Mobile allows you to customize your entire plan and you can determine how much you want to pay within your budget.

I switched to Sprint a few years ago....  My service was horrible.  Lost and Dropped Calls...  Dead areas....  I hated it.  Last Summer went back to Verizon..  and then got peeved again because I couldn't get a similar plan to the one that I had....  But the 4G is so much better.  Guess it depends on where you live.

The cheapest unlimited service is no contract with MetroPCS for $60 which T-Mobile owns, they have one for 80 a month.  Sprint may still have one, you could get it if you join a Framily for $45 a month, but not in the DC area where I live where the only real 4G LTE services is with a Spark enabled phone, otherwise you have to go to Ellicott City.  I dumped Virgin Mobile, sold my Galaxy S3 for 100 dollars and bought an unlocked Moto X which I have on T-Mobile's no credit check $30 a month plan where you get 100 minutes and a whopping 5GB of 4G data.  You have to look for it and activate online, but you don't need WalMart to e-mail you airtime, just pay your first month with your credit card online.. There are services like Vonage Mobile and Groove IP Lite where you can call free, if you use WiFi it won't take up your data, either way you don't use your minutes.  I have a Verizon high speed internet Wi Fi hotspot at home   Only problem with leaving Verizon is they have the exclusive deal with NFL mobile for Video on smartphones.

This is all besides the fact that Verizon forces bloatware and apps that you can't delete on you.

That's why you should just buy an unlocked phone and choose between GSM based providers that use T-Mobile and AT&T.  I don't recommend a IPhone which I had for T-Mobile test drive because the 5S is between 600 and 700 for that version, if you have to finance it, use a store credit card where if you're unhappy with the service provider you don't have to pay it back at once.

Anyone mentioning T-MOBILE and verizon in th same category haven't tried both... Waste products-Mobile is horrible in baltimore ... And especially in more rural areas!

I will say this though : Verizon screws EVERYONE on 3G... I have a 5S and if I don't have LTE... 3G IS A darn joke.

I got a Windows phone when I made the switch back to Verizon last Summer...  I'm running 8.1 on it.  It's like having a mini PC in your hand...  And you have so much more flexibility.  I love it.  My brother who has Sprint up in PA just switched to a Windows phone and so did my Sister in Law.  She actually dumped her IPhone for one...  You can do sooooo much more with the Windows phones.

If you don't like Verliezon throttling data, then go switch services when your contract's up. I dealt with their wireless customer service one time in the Congressional South location on Rockville Pike, waiting over a hour for an associate about no contract services. Later I found out they don't give 4g LTE for that service for their no contract customers until recently. I had all kinds of troubles with their landline service as well, when I ordered high speed internet, I called them 10 times about a missing router in my kit, finally getting action when I put a message on their FIOS Facebook page, when that phone went out, I e-mailed WUSA 9's Call For Action which called the following Monday after a tech fixed the problem. Putting them up next to Satan make him look like Santa Claus. About the service I'm with for cellular, I don't look at coverage in Baltimore, since I live in the DC Metro area and only go there mostly for sporting and entertainment events, it was good enough to post an Instagram on Ravensvison during the practice, last week. If I had to choose between Verliezon and two cans and a string, I'd choose the latter.

I know this is a random bump but with the phone data wars going on I thought this was a good time to bring this thread back up. It's funny how once T-Mobile announced the data rollover plan, AT & T followed suit but with stricter guidelines. Verizon on the other hand, they simply don't care for that or you. I was reading an article that said some interesting things.

From Verizon CFO Fran Shammo:

“We did not go to places where we did not financially want to go to save a customer,” Shammo told CNET. “And there’s going to be certain customers who leave us for price, and we are just not going to compete with that because it doesn’t make financial sense for us to do that.”

With T-Mobile offering cheaper plans, and Sprint guaranteeing to cut your bill in half, Verizon once again is doing nothing and is not going to jump into the Phone War.

“We will react rationally and where we think we need to react,” Shammo said. “The key to any competitive move is not to overreact to a competitor.”

I agree with him on not overreacting but... for him he has to decide. Either he loses more customers and more money, or he does what's best for business and join in the war to keep customers from leaving.

Verizon acts like a monopoly, what they need to do is improve customer service in their stores, instead of just making you sign in, give you an appointment time, similar to what Apple does, when they are full of slots then just do it for the following day. They are the 2015 way of saying "Ma Bell".
