Will Hill Signed

I agree that he is the best option, but he's going to be out of the loop for 6 weeks and I just don't think he will be ready to jump right in and start. If he was a Raven for the past 2 years I would feel differently, but he is still getting acclimated to the defense.

In the end, I like to think talent will win out.

Plus, you might not want to screw with things if Stewart is playing well come week 7.

I would give it a week or two after suspension. He's got training camp right now to learn the defense and get chemistry, so that helps, but give it a week or two to get back into the swing of things

We'll see what happens throughout TC, and if he starts running with the 1's that's a good sign he will come in and start, especially if Stewart is struggling.

If Stewart plays well though, he might end up hanging on to the job either way.

That's a big if to me

It's an if, but not something to discount.  Stewart doesn't really have to light the world on fire to keep the job.  If he's out there not letting up big plays and playing at least some above average football, it's not worth the transition to another guy.

I just don't view Stewart as a viable option for free safety. He's not much of a playmaker, something the Ravens wanted, or one for deep coverage. I'd feel uncomfortable leaving him in single high.

Of course, he could play moderately well, not really making or giving up plays, but I can't honestly see it. He also has to prove he can stay healthy, which might be Hill's ticket onto the field

In reading the comments from Ozzie and Harbaugh, they seem to think Hill is ready to straighten out his off field issues. Stating the obvious, if it works this signing could end up being huge for the future of the D.

Here's one shot of Hill (#48) in the first week of practice. He had a pick on the first day, too.

Pees has been impressed with Hill. My guess is he would start right away if not suspended. Now it's a wait and see.

All I heard from Giants fans is how disappointed they were that the organization had to cut him because of issues. He's really a high-caliber young safety when on the field.

He's just a very good, very skilled player. It's sad that he got cut due to drug use, but hopefully he's ready to stay clean. You already know how I feel about him starting

I don't want to say that a guy we picked up in FA, who has had prior troubles , and is suspended 6 games will start when he can BUT he will. There is zero reason for him not to be starting week 7 unless someone on the depth chart breaks out and even then.

Stewart is small and not a true FS. I don't trust Him in cover 1. I'd put money that he slides to CB the second we don't need him at safety.

Stewart is 5'11  and 214.There is/has been plenty of solid free safeties around the same height or weight. I don't know enough about him to say he isn't a true free safety or not but he. is very versatile. The guy can play strong safety, free safety, and nickel corner.  The most I know about Stewart is that he had his best year stat wise as a free safety back in 2011 as a St Louis Ram .

I was talking in comparison to Will Hill and you agreed with me that he could/should be moved to CB.

STewards coverage skills are supbar, especially compared to hill. He is a much better SS, but I think when hill comes back, we start to run Stewart like the Saints used Rafeal Bush.

Agreed. Not to mention Spags is here too so he knows exactly how to utilize Darian Stewart. I see him being a consistent player in the back end for us. Our front 7 should wreak havoc this year and that will put a lot less pressure on our secondary.

But for the time being he is the best option we have at FS. If Will Hill comes back Week 7 and that's a big if he will probably start working in at FS and eventually take over.

Not really an if... His suspension ends week 7. He's never got multiple offenses in one season.

I wonder how Will been doing in camp, besides the pick he got on his 1st day here?? He's pretty impressive on the field in his highlights, but not impressive at all off the field. I wish there was more highlight videos.....

Pees raving over Will Hill. Would be the starter week one if he weren't suspended, it sounds like

He wouldn't be on our team if he wasn't suspended, but I agree. I still think it will take a couple weeks to get him in the starting lineup after the suspension though. By week 9 he should be starting unless Stewart is unexpectedly playing lights out. Ravens lucked out getting him if he can clean up his act.

I really think this was a wake-up call for him to clean up his act. I just really hope the Ravens can re-sign him if he plays well.

I don't think Stewart will be lights put at free safety if his time in Saint Louis is any indication of what's to come

It's hard to say what Stewart will look like out there, and he's had problems staying healthy in the past. He's looked very good from all accounts I have seen.

Good for the Ravens or from his time with the Rams?

With the Ravens.

The only thing I worry about with him, and this is from the tenure with the Rams, is that he's not rangy enough to be a single high safety. I hope that doesn't limit Matt Elam being at the LoS because he did really well in his only two games that were at strong safety, or was it one?

I didn't really watch too many Rams games, and he didn't stand out at all to me that I can remember so I can't really say how good his range is. I haven't had time to go back and watch how he was utilized in their defense. He did play both safety postions in St. Louis , and his coverage grades have not been poor according to PFF. His biggest problem seems to be with his run support and tackling, both of which would be mitigated if he his playing more of a FS role.

Weren't there reports that Oneill Cousins was looking good as well?  I remember how that turned out.  I don't trust the stuff out of training camp.

Tell me about it, this is why I'd rather listen to Mike Preston than coach speak.

He's way too aggressive with his tackling. His coverage isn't bad. He just isn't a lone, single high safety. If you play him in double high, he's instinctive and smart enough to make plays, but he can't cover an entire field. He's very unreliable in man coverage. Plays pretty decent underneath.

I doubt he will be put on an island in cover 1 very frequently, so I'm not too concerned.
