Training Camp Comments, Questions and Concerns

951 posts in this topic

Well, of all the complaints we've heard about Daniels thus far, they all revolve around him not getting separation.  Haven't heard any negatives about his catching ability.

I hope so, our receivers have given me PTSD and grey hair over the years.

So, keeping Supernaw and releasing Daniels is a realistic option. He's performed well in TC with no negatives that I know of.

I'm hoping that Supernaw is another UDFA gem, because his name would look awesome on a jersey.

My biggest concern with Daniels is that they keep giving him "days off" to preserve his legs.  If they're this bad already, what are they going to be like halfway into the season?  I think he's safe, but there's definitely a cause for concern with him.

I think training camp is more brutal for some of these guys than the actual games themselves....  He's proven himself, but yeah, he may have a few issues.  But, none of this compares at all to what we dealt with last season.

When dickson performed well he was really the starter.

You're right, good catch, Heap had just left

The TE spot is a key position in this offense so to have this guy a question mark at this point doesnt make sense.

As a young player today is one of the most stressful of camp but one of my favorite as a fan. Camp is officially over and tonight is the last chance that some of these guys will have to make a statement of why they deserve a shot to be on this team. All the practice film is in, from this moment on, practice is more about game prep, not seeing who's talent is best.

Tonight after the starters and top backups are done, we will see guys fighting for their potential careers in the NFL, given all they got to hopefully make a key ST block or tackle. To hopefully get that sack or just consistently push the pocket. Those UDFA DL knowing their is a slight chance with KLM and Urban going down will go as hard as possible. With Chykie not performing well and the other injuries, guys like Jacob, Franks, Olatoye, Norman, Miles, Trawick, and Livine should see an huge opportunity to make their case for making this team.

Then after the game, it become more and more clear who isn't gonna make the team, even though cuts don't happen until the 26th, you kind of have an idea by the amount of time a guy did or didn't get in tonights game. Then based off their performance you might get a good indication as well. Also this is when you can kind of look around the league and notice if a guy on another team might be coming available. He might be performing well but the team just can't keep him, much like Adrain Hamilton a couple years ago. Or an young guy is really coming on strong and a vet might be pushed out of the door because of it, like most of us thought Canty would be if KLM and Urban performed well.

It's an exciting time and I only wish I was in Ozzie's inner circle right now. He's probably breaking down film of players right now as I type.

I said a while back I felt like Daniels would be this year's disappointment. I don't think he'll be awful because he's not considered to be our top option so that removes some pressure. Still, I just don't think he'll be that great like I recall some suggesting.

Daniels will make the team, he gets mentioned by the players and coaches everyday. He IS slow but he's a veteran backup with a little gas in the tank. He's Dallas Clark, basically, maybe a little better.

He's on a 1-year deal, the Ravens know what they're getting. Btw, interesting, Aaron Wilson says it's a $2M deal, half of that being incentives - wonder what they are?

Still a bargain. Dallas was well worth the money last year.

I think anyone expecting him to be "great" was greatly overestimating his abilities and role at this point. Even in Houston he wasn't great, he was just able to take advantage of misdirection and play action. If you ever lined him up 1on1 with athletic LB or Safeties he was never able to run past them, but he was and still is good enough to get behind them once that take that false step from biting on the PA.

What are you looking for from him as a #2? The only reason I feel Dallas was viewed as a disappointment was because Dickson couldn't handle being the top end TE, thus we relied more on Dallas then we should have. I don't really expect O.D to catch 40+ balls because there are far too many weapons and Kubes is far to creative not to use them all. His impact will be felt as that guy who takes advantage of coverage that is directed towards the other guys. Being able to sneak behind coverage in the redzone, or pick up a key 1st down to keep the chains moving. However if anyone is expecting him to be among the top TEs in the NFL, they are kidding themselves imo.

Hard to make an impact when you are added two weeks into camp. He has talent but I don't think it's 53 man talent right now, with the strong play of Jacobs, Franks and Olatoye of late. I actually don't expect to see much of him tonight

Pretty much a camp body type of guy.  If we thought highly enough of him that we thought he could have made the team, we would have signed him back when he originally tried out with Franks, Ross, and those guys.

Yea, I agree. He has talent, but obviously all these guys have talent which is why the team even signed them. He made a couple good plays during the practice I was there but like you said he's just a camp body type. With both Webb and Ross down, you don't want to wear down the CBs you do have, even if they are young and need the reps.

Daniels will only dissappint if you expect a lot from him. If he plays near Dallas Clark level , who was unfortunately our #1 TE , then he will do great at #2 .

Also who needs separation when Kubes can scheme you open. All we need him to bring is a set of hands and to stay healthy. Also he isn't the best blocker but he can get upfield and understands the blocking scheme.

After the way some of the second and third stringers played tonight I think it's going to be easier to cut down to a 53 man roster than in years past. Dallas third stringers made the game interesting thanks to Raven's awful tackling, collapsing pockets and lack of secondary depth. I came out of the 49ers week thinking we had turned the corner, but this game, though a victory, showed that the drop off after the first team is pretty significant.

Can this be categorized as a concern?

@MikePrestonSun: Ravens CB Jimmy Smith still coughing up blood in the locker room after the game.

Yes as same goes for him as I said about Webb... Any "extensive" missed games from either and that alone could kill our season

Curious about the WR and what we do there.

The top 4 are obvious locks, and then we have 1-2 spots for Campanaro, Aiken, Butler, and Thompson.  Thompson stood out as a returner but not as a WR.  Butler had one nice, tough catch.  Neither Campanaro or Aiken did much tonight.  How do we end up picking 1-2 of these guys if no one separates?

And some more...

Jimmy Smith sounded like he was a bit concerned after the game: "I don't know what's wrong with me," he told colleague Mike Preston.

Smith also said that he didn't remember anything after the first series of the game.

Smith said to Preston: "I know we got a stop on that first series, but after that, I can't remember a thing."

He likely bruised/contused a lung. Won't be a lengthy healing process but I doubt he's playing again in preseason.

If Jimmy Smith misses any time we might as well just give up the season. We'll give up a touchdown every drive.

I hope he's okay because what he's saying sounds quite scary.

If he has a lung injury flying home could be risky.

I'm not sure thats even true with current cabin pressurization technology -- was likely an issue back in 1960. But no way he's practicing this week anyhow, so he might as well stay on a day or two before making the flight.

Harbs/Ozzie putting all their eggs in one basket instead of addressing depth concerns will bite us again. Last year they assumed Tandon Doss would magically work out (NOPE). This year they did it with Chykie Brown (NOPE).

Different. We have 3 CBs that should be starting and are injured. We aren't relying on him to be a full time starter....

I had CB as one of those sleeper positions for a high draft pick. I'm honestly shocked that we added no one of note until Franks and Ross just before training camp. It's a serious concern.

Webb and Jimmy both have injury history, ESPECIALLY Webb. Counting on both of them being 100% healthy is a pipe dream honestly.
