Real top 10

30 posts in this topic

To me it's clear this top 10 as voted by the players is somewhat of a joke. I always wonder how many receivers do this survey? It's ridiculously weighted that way every year. Anyway. Who are your top 10 players? For 2014.

1. Aaron Rodgers

2. JJ watt

3. Tom brady

4. Earl Thomas

5. Robert Quinn

6. Evan Mathis

7. Jimmy graham

8. Calvin Johnson

9. Drew Brees

10. Lesean McCoy

11. Joe Thomas

I made my list thinking of who is the best player at their position and how much better than the next player at that position.

Evan Mathis is more of a run blocker that plays with great players beside him. I wouldn't rank him in the top 10

Well your guards primary job is to be a great run blocker and Mathis has been the best for a couple years now. And he is still good as a pass protector. The importance of good interior line play is always underrated. I think he belongs. I think several top tackles are closer together which made it tougher to pick just one.

Not true. Left guards are equally important in pass blocking. They are run blockers, and then left guard does pull, but he's also responsible for combo blocks against better pass rushers and recognizing and picking up blitzes. Mathis definitely excels in run blocking, which is exactly what the Eagles expect, but I don't know that I can call him the best because there are more well rounded guards

Whom would you rate ahead of him?

You really don't think Peyton was one of the 11 best players last year? Why not?

I could see the argument against it, but I disagree. He's exactly what you look for in a WR and will go down as one of the best, if not the best at his position. Even if he had a bit of a down year, he is still put up great numbers while constantly faced double and triple teams. He had the entire defense primarily focused on him and he's still impossible to cover.

I had manning first then I decided going in to 2014 if I need to win a playoff game I'm banking on Brady over manning

Just best.

Since this is for the upcoming season, Yanda (I think he returns to form with Kubiak), Brian Bulaga, Larry Worford (I think he takes a huge step forward), and Louis Vasquez. Mathis plays with two awesome players beside him and is very lopsided toward run blocking

Bulaga is an OT

Okay, give me a second because I'm getting my players mixed up apparently. Is Josh Sitton the one I'm thinking of?

I could see warfard taking the top spot for 15. Sitton and Vazquez an argument could be made for those guys as well. Maybe that seperation bumps Mathis down overall. But these guys as well as yanda if he is physically himself should all be somewhere top 25 or better IMO. Stellar offensive line play should be valued overall higher than good to very good WR play for example.

Did you consider gronks extensive injuries? I think he's a better player than graham but I question his health.

How is Peyton not in your top 10?

I had him at first but decided to weight the importance of how they play in the playoffs higher. Which put all three of the other QBs ahead of him and just outside the top 10. He has been a quite different player in the playoffs.

There were a bunch of guys I thought about for those last spots I just went with lynch. I think if people are willling to put Charles and/or McCoy in the top 10 then lynch should be near there as well. Shady plays behind the best oline in the league and in an offense tailor-made for him where he is the centerpiece. Charles played with a very good oline last year too.

Not taking anything away from them as they're great players, but Lynch ran behind a pretty poor oline and against some of the toughest defenses on a week to week basis. Yet he still consistently produced at a high rate. He's a beast who's the hardest back to bring down evidenced by his 108 missed tackles forced throughout the whole season. He beats you with his burst, elusiveness as power. He has great vision and is a lot more well-rounded than some think. There's a number of guys who could grab a spot at the end of this list and I think Lynch deserves to be one of them. Even with RB being more devalued he is an elite and underrated player IMO.
