Why do the Ravens always Settle for less?

70 posts in this topic

why does nobody want to point out that without extra cap space, we probably arent able to pick up monroes contract.

i dont have any numbers on hand, but with the singings we made, we were already pretty tight under the cap, if we keep boldin, we dont get doom, and what i think is even more important, monroe.

trading boldin indirectly allowed us to lock down a franchise LT for a long time.

We always spend the maximum salary cap allows, and NEVER EVER spend it for flash.

Our organization draft/pick up players solely based on what they can do for our team.   We never settle for less.

And, let's be clear that getting what they could and getting Boldin OUT OF THE AFC had great value to the team.

Otherwise, he gets released and possibly ends up somewhere like Denver, NE or Indy.

I would like to make a few points here in regards to the Ravens settling for less.

1). The AnQuan Boldin Trade:

The 49ers clearly robbed us and got the better end of the deal! A measly 6th round pick are you kidding me? Why didn't we get a 2nd and 3rd rounder? That should have been the trade. The 6th round pick we got has not fared out and I don't want to mention his name cause I don't want to call people out. Without AnQuan Boldin we would have not won a Superbowl and becuase of his value to us we should have gotten a 6th round pick.

2). The difference between a one time Champion and a Dynasty:

The difference between a team that wins a championship every decade vs. a Dynasty is that Dynasties are willing to get Greedy and the regualr champions will settle for less.

I'm by no means telling Ozzie how to do his job but we got a shot at being a Dynsaty and Ozzie needs to go for it. So yes I am asking if he can get a little more greedy an aggressive when dealing players. As the great Gordon Gekko says it: "Greed is Good".

1). If we have to trade one of our best players due to cap limits, we should accept nothing less than a 2nd round pick and 3rd rounder. Preferrably a 1st rounder if we can get it.

2). Get contract extensions done sooner instead of letting them play it out and letting their prices go up. (Torrey and Jimmy for example)

3). Never ever settle for less in a trade make sure it's a win-win and not a get the wrong side of the deal!

The Boldin trade is debatable.  They did it to afford more depth on defense after is was eviscerated after 2012.  That move really answers #2.  Ozzie is trying to get out in front of the contract extension situation.  Q had to pave the way for the rest of the team.  They're not the same team as back in 2006 even in the way they handle their business.  With a franchise QB with a ballooning salary over the next several years they needed to manage the talent around Joe more like the Patriots.  They, by design, will do more with "less".  And by "less" I mean they're sprinkling in a few superstars among average, rotational and developmental players.

It also means drafting great players so they can get the most out of rookie salaries (i.e. >$500k) for 4 years.  As they come due the best players will be extended.  They don't regularly go out and spend top dollar on vets.  No guaranties there as evidenced by Lee Evans ($10M talent, 10 cent head).  Smith Sr. in contrast is a hard worker and that's what they want their rookies to emulate.

I really shouldnt post here but,,,,

On the subject of dynasties.

List for me how many teams have made six consecutive playoff appearances.....

See some teams hit it big and then fizzle to nothing for four or five years.  The Ravens maintain by spending smart and investing well.  Being a dynasty is not a sprint but a marathon.

The Chargers of last season made the play-offs 4 consecutive years and 5 of 6 seasons and no Super Bowl.  They were dominant, but not a dynasty.  The Ravens are better than that with 5 consec post-seasons and a Super Bowl title, but I wouldn't call then dynastic yet.  Another SB title or a few more deep play-off runs and they'll fall into that spectrum.

Nah..don't spin that story on me. Ozzie said it himself that getting rid of bold in was a mistake.

OP is ridiculous but my one question about the Boldin trade is why didn't we just let him become a FA? We would've surely received a 4th or 5th round comp pick for him leaving in FA rather than a trade. I know players signed count against players lost in FA but it's still hard to imagine us not getting a better pick out of just letting him walk.

We needed the money for last year, not this year.  Veterans with 10+ years can garner no higher than a 5th round pick so we took a round loss to get the money when we actually needed it and we got to choose where he got to go.

Hmm, what story was I spinning?  I never said anything about it being a mistake or not.  I was just commenting that a 6th was probably the best they were going to get in a trade for a 32-year old WR and that, if they were going to part ways with him, there was also great value to getting him out of the AFC.  So, even "just a 6th" was preferable to releasing him and having him to sign in a place like Denver, NE or Indy.

Anquan Boldin was an aging receiver with an expensive contract.  At the time, some people viewed it as a favor to us that he was traded for at all, because we needed the money.
