Rolando McClain traded to Dallas Cowboys

120 posts in this topic

Maybe we should trade Derrick Mason to the Cowboys for a 3rd while we're at it.

Wonder what they'd give for ray Lewis then.

The cowboys are giving up a late-round pick and taking on a 700k contract. That is very little risk to take a chance on a player that could potentially help fill a huge hole. They need all the LB's they can get as they are extremely thin there and honestly the chances of that late round pick making an impact for them aren't that much greater than McClain doing so IMO. Also they wouldn't have done the deal if they don't think he'll play. Either way I don't get how this is an "AWFUL" trade with the very little risk it brings.

Correct you are, minimal risk, its a wash.

I bet Arthur Brown was the primary target of the Cows...

The 6th round pick that we obtained is a conditional one based on play time.  I assume that if he decides that he wants to quit football for the 758th time, we get nothing out of it.

I don't think this trade is a crazy as it seems. This could be a real win-win for both teams. Have to admit that I'm still smiling, though.

The cowboys are probably kicking themselves for not drafting Mosely right now. Martin is a great pick, but they need a MLB. this reflects desperation and wouldn't be surprised if Arthur Brown was their original target.

but we would get our pick back, right?

It hasn't been confirmed anywhere, but it's pretty much forgone that the pick would come back to us.

Also, I'm assuming that's where the "conditional" part comes in.  If he gets whatever amount of playing time, we get the 6th instead of the 7th in 2016.

No way.  McClain plans to play and with how weak their ILB core is just the fact that he is playing will make this a good trade for them.

We win as well since we upgraded our 7th to a 6th by trading a player from our most talented position who probably would have never seen the field.

Great trade for both sides.

Great trade for us. Terrible trade for them. Shows how much of a fool Jones is. McClain planned to play the past two years, but then retired twice when he found out it was gonna take WORK to do so. The last time was especially embarrassing. He quit on it halfway though a conditioning test, for pete's sake. So we get a 6th for moving a retired, lazy bum with absolutely no heart and they made out too? Nonsense, bro, nonsense.

Well now this trade is weird. Never really got it but now it's just weird

It's littered with conditions most likely.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge.  You all are making very bold statements about this guy.  We don't know what is going on in his personal life or what truly motivates him.  We are basically trading garbage picks here.

He is already reinstated so he will probably be playing in training camp.  I wouldn't be surprised if he made it on the field this season.

Full breakdown of the trade.  Lots of conditions as I thought...

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/02/ravens-get-sixth-rounder-only-if-mcclain-plays-half-of-defensive-snaps/

Deal in place right now is to swap 7ths in 2016.  McClain has to be on the 46 man active roster 3 times or 53 man roster 5 times for that trade to go through.  If our pick comes before Dallas' in the 7th, the picks don't get swapped.

Additionally, if McClain plays 50% of the snaps this year, the trade moves up to the 2015 draft, we get a 6th, and send our 7th.

Don't like the trade anymore due to how complicated it is.

We still have the chance to get something out of a guy that we otherwise would have let drift into obscurity.  It's still a win to even get the chance to get something out of him.

I know, I'm just joking. I don't think I've ever seen a trade this weird and complicated though.

Rolando McClain is weird and complicated, so it's fitting.

We get a little, Dallas gives a little. He's a low cost risk/reward guy. We certainly weren't gonna keep him so anything is fine.

I can't literally read his mind, but the eyes don't lie, and neither does good common sense. I don't know what truly motivates him, neither do the Raider fans, neither does Harbaugh, and probably neither does McClain. But I know what doesn't motivate him, and that is football, competition, being the best he can be. This guy quit halfway through a conditioning test and retired for the 2nd time in a year the day later. What else can you possibly infer from that?? I don't think it is bold at all to say this guy doesn't have heart, isn't driven, isn't a hard worker.

For our sake, I wish him the best. I hope he plays over 50% of the snaps so we can pick up that 6th round pick for a guy that was worthless to us.

I will concede this: if the current details of the deal is correct, then it's fair to both Dallas and us. I just think they should have opted for someone else, a capable backup buried on the depth chart somewhere who is hungry to prove himself, even if he's not as talented an athlete as McClain. I'd bet on the former over the latter every time, you can do a lot with a hard worker, but trying to rehabilitate a poor attitude is pretty tough.

I honestly hope he's good, I think he deserves some good karma after turning his life around.

According to Todd Archer on ESPN, the trade is:

•If McClain is on the Cowboys' 53-man roster for more than five games OR on the 46-man roster for more than three games in 2014, AND the Cowboys have a WORSE record than Baltimore in 2014, the two teams will swap seventh-round picks in the 2016 draft

•If McClain plays more than 50% of the Cowboys defensive snaps in 2014, Dallas would give up their sixth-round pick in 2015, and receive a 2015 seventh-round pick from Baltimore.

•If McClain is on the 53-man roster for fewer than five games AND on the 46-man roster for fewer than three games in 2014, and the Cowboys have a BETTER record than Baltimore in 2014, Dallas gives up nothing.

•If McClain plays less than 50% of the Cowboys defensive snaps in 2014, AND the Cowboys have a BETTER record than Baltimore in 2014, Dallas gives up nothing.

Convoluted, but zero risk for the Ravens...

It kind've irked me when I first saw that. Why didn't he try here? But I'm glad he's doing good. Hopefully it continues.

He has no place here with Mosley, Brown, Daryl & Bynes. Hopefully Rolando plays a lot of snaps next year and stays out of trouble

Compared to the rest of the Cowboys' linebackers, even my grandmother would look good.  While it will be frustrating if he does end up playing well for the team, he obviously wasn't ready to compete when he was here in Baltimore.  If his move to the Cowboys was what was needed to get his head on straight, then I'm happy for the kid.  It was never going to work here, and the best place for it to work is for a team we won't play unless we both make it to the Super Bowl.

I would rather he does something so that we get more in return. It was clear he wasn't going to do anything for us so there is nothing to lose
