who still believes trading boldin was a bad idea?

We would not have missed Q a bit had Pitta not gone down. And with the way the O line played last year I'm not so sure having Boldin would have made much difference.

Big surprise you would have this opinion though. Dumervil was a less productive player huh?

............as was Daryl Smith. What a waste of money and cap room.

Especially because we couldn't secure Ellerbe or Ed Reed (greatest safety ever) it looked doubly foolish.  Not that we didn't try, but we totally jumped the gun on Boldin.  He and Flaccco were on the same page were really jelling well and clicking. Gave us great toughness and leadership.

Ellerbe played okay in Miami but not near good enough to be worth the 7 mil per that Miami gave him, can't really fault Ozzie for letting him go and I don't think we bring in Daryl Smith if we bring him back.

Reed got paid 5 mil per and he got cut. Reed is one of my favorite players but if you think it was worth paying that amount to keep him, you must not have seen him the past year or in 2012.

IMO, I would say that it is a good thing we didn't bring either player back at that price. No disrespecting either player but every player is only worth so much in the salary cap world of the NFL and they both went at too high of a price for what they did. You pay players for what they are going to do, not what they have already done and neither did enough at least this early into their contracts to show they were worth what they were paid.

Yeah it wouldn't have mattered had we kept Boldin. Last time I checked, Boldin never played on the O-line. Kubiak is the guy who can hopefully get that fixed

Agreed. We were not winning another SB last year with or without Boldin. Way too many other issues. But with Boldin some of the games would have been more fun. I realize that football is a business, but it is not a business for me.

As of this moment it was still a horrible trade, we didn't owe him that much money and his cap wasn't that bad.

We lost Pitta and Jacoby for stretches to injury and couldn't run the ball. Ray Rice was hurt, the offensive line sucked, Pitta was injured, Jacoby missed a few games with injury.

His $7 million cap hit was more than Joe's and he was going to save the Ravens $6 million.

Every reason you just named is the exact reason that Boldin wouldn't have helped.

If Pitta replaces Boldin, who replaces Pitta.

Or, maybe Pitta catches 130 balls ?

Pitta wouldn't have replaced Q. Having a viable target at TE would have opened things up for Torrey, Marlon, JJ, etc..

After the next couple years pass by, when the Demise of the Baltimore Raven's is discussed within "knowledgeable" circles, almost all will point to the Boldin Disaster as the key event that led to the dramatic decline. Almost universally, the fans will lament that was the straw that broke the Raven's wings.  En mass, they will be correct.

For perspective, its important to point out that Ozzie Newsome actually stated in regard to the Boldin "trade", " I took Flacco's security blanket from him." Anyone doubting that statement will have to look it up. I don't have time to rehash facts nor do other's homework for them.

What's important about that statement is that by context Oz realized how important Boldin was to Flacco and thus the team. Nevertheless, Oz made the decision to jettison Boldin.

Furthermore, contained within the statement and Oz's action is the clear implication that Flacco was the type of Quarterback to single handily transform a squad into a contender.  Oz felt by jettisoning Boldin he could force Flacco to use his other receiving tools and develop them into "go to" guys like Boldin.  What transpired in 2013 is now public record.  Flacco regressed substantially and the passing game stalled in key situations for lack of that "Go To" clutch receiver.  Anyone believing otherwise is simply in denial and is ignoring what transpired.

The worst part though is the manifest miss-evaluation of Flacco's contribution to the team.  Oz obviously believed he had a better read on Flacco's skill set than anyone else. Oz thought Flacco was "generational".  Oz thought he had himself a phenom.

What makes it even worse yet is that Flacco is not the sole player Oz has recently miss evaluated.  In a very short time the Raven's went from Champions to a team in crisis.  Anyone doubting the latter will not have to wait very long before our current status is illustrated.

The Boldin Disaster can not be overstated.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

ow lord why are people still crying over this.

BAD FO thinks short term.

GOOD FO thinks long term.

its was and will be a good decision.

get over it.

well i think that alot of people  have no clue how the financial side works of running a team.

boldin production did not warrant his salary and with him not willing to take a cut ( he had every right though) he was going to be released.

well any draft pick is better then nothing.

so it was a good call.

1 post season doesent make up for 3 regular and 2 post seasons lol

The 49ers had more cap space than us during that time which is one of reasons why they  didn't mind paying Boldin the  money he was getting and they knew their offense was a much better fit for him. I hope you are not trying to say Boldin was the sole reason why they went deep in playoffs with out even addressing other key factors of their success such as having a a solid offensive line, better offensive coordinator, a solid  running back whom average 4.1 yards per carry, one of the best tights end in the league whom may had missed some games last year but not nearly as much as Dennis Pitta,

I think that Tru11 was referring to 2012...  Boldin's production in the regular season was not all that stellar.

People shouldn't read into anything from these training camp stories.  Last year all the stories were great from training camp. The defense sounded like it was going to be elite, we had a new running scheme that was going to be even better and all these hungry wide receivers ready to step up.  So don't count your chickens before they hatch.

We lost Pitta and Jacoby for stretches to injury and couldn't run the ball. Boldin was an imposing reliable threat, that stayed healthy and could make those clutch third down catches.  Basically Torrey was the only consistent offensive threat we had. Ray Rice was hurt, the offensive line sucked, Pitta was injured, Jacoby missed a few games with injury. Boldin definitely would have helped and people who think otherwise are drinking the Kool-aid.

There were dozens of plays or offensive series last season where the offensive couldn't move the ball or convert on 3rd down. Boldin easily could have given us a good option/look on some plays.  And I think having him on the team could have easily gotten us 1 maybe 2 more wins in some of those close losses. Like against Greenbay or Chicago.,  9-7 or 10-6 and we could have made the playoffs.

After last season we would have had to resign him or release so basically when you talk about Boldin your only talking about last season the final year we had him under contract. We can't evaluate this season yet, no clue if the offensive will be decent or terrible. It's not going to be elite though I can say that much with the looming Ray Rice suspension.

Blessing is disguse, If we did stumple into the playoffs with Boldin, no changes were going to be made tot he staff, Kubes would have still been here, Q would have been a year older and we were goint to be strapped for cash  probably unable to re-sign our free agens. Like Monroe (hho probably wouldnt have even been here.)

yeah lets just disregard the prior 3 regular season and 2 post seasons where boldin wasent really that much of a security blanket lol.

to many fans on these boards base their opinion about a historic 4 game run where everything clicked and they just disregard everything prior to that ......

But we had Jacoby Jones to lead the team in total yards. Who needs Boldin?

You cherry picking the one signing that performed to the level of compensation and forgetting about the duds shows the disingenuous nature of your opinions posted on this site.

I disagree with what you say about Ozzie. I feel the fans , local and national media gives the front office too much credit especially around draft time but the Ravens front office is in the top 5 in the NFL.

Did they make a mistake on Flacco?  Absolutely.  It would have taken some stones to float him out there in free agency but getting the two firsts would have helped reshape this franchise for another big run.  I believe the front office understands exactly what they have in Flacco. Here's hoping Kubiak, Dennison and their playbook ( & playcalling)  can make him better

Time to move on and just understand that it was done for a number of reasons.... some of them, I am sure, we aren't even aware of....  Regardless...  The past is the past.  The future is where it all lies.  Move forward...  There's nothing we can change about it....  We can only worry about where we are, and where we are going.

I agree.  There were probably valid reasons and some not.   Every move FO makes there are risks and rewards.   Most of the time, they get it done the right way and few times they don't.  Im just glad the pieces we have for this upcomming year.   The players, and coaches all seem to have a intense enthusiasm to compete in a very high level.   We have plenty of depth for competition, new schemes to get excited about, and new faces to discover their foothold on NFL territory.   Lets move on.

how do you still constantly point out the lack of a possession guy, but ALWAYS fail to notice the lack of pass blocking? our offensive line had so many plays where joe was sacked before he finished his dropback, it was a disaster to watch, seriously, what team were you watching last season that made you say "man, a better receiver really wouldve helped here"

if anything, having pitta instead of dallas clark wouldve helped more, than having boldin. there were plays where dallas clark wouldnt even bother reaching for the ball because he was scared to.

i dont understand your negativity, its pretty ugly, and there is no reason, we understand you think a receiver is the most important part of the team, and that may be okay with fanbases like dallas and detroit, but here in baltimore we know thats not true, which is why we also know your either wrong, or an expert troll.

Trading Boldin wasn't the bad idea. It was expecting that Jacoby, Doss and others could replace him.

I was WAY against getting rid of Boldin, but it was more thinking Pitta would be the middle of the field, go-to guy for Flacco. And we all now what happened there.

True it hurt us but look at who we were able to reload with on defense, given Boldins age, I say its a fair trade. If replacing Boldin was the major issue, trust me, we would have made it a point to grab Kelvin Benjamin or Cody Latimer, or Allen Robinson for that matter. The big issue was an aging middle of the defense(Dline, LB, FS), along with an offensive line that wouldn't have given Flacco the time to get to Boldin anyway. Point is all teams have to move on and Boldin was and is on the wrong side of 30 when all these amazing young talents are coming up through the draft. I still think Campanaro will do just as well if not better in the slot because of his hands and shiftiness. He will not need to over power and beat corners with force, he will tire them out with his quickness and allow him to not just get a few yards but potentially take it to the house.

That is where I believe the mistake was made as well. Ozzie and co. thought Coby and Doss would be able to step in to that role and produce enough between them to minimize the loss of Q. Doss absolutely flopped and was definitely a disappointment for the organization. Coby probably can't fill that #3 WR role consistently, and got hurt in game 1 to derail everything.

JoeyFlex....whats really troubling is not Ozzie's failure to recognize how essential certain players he allowed to walk were to our success.  At this point what is troubling is that it is now clear happenstance is what aggregated them here.  The perfect chemistry that the Raven's had was not a calculation made by Ozzie Newsome.  It's now clear he never appreciated the delicate balance that was present. He did not understand what made Flacco great and what made our defense work.  This next season will point that out to you.

what im saying is, there was nothing else that could have been done, and its really not like joe had all the chemistry in the world with boldin, he had no more chemistry with boldin than other 800 yard receivers have with their qb's, it wasnt some super special and rare tandem, everything clicked on both sides of the ball for a 4 game stretch and it paid dividends, it didnt all lie on boldins shoulders, there was more chemistry with pitta and dare i say jacoby for most of the postseason than with boldin, jacoby was the prime playmaker, pitta was a more constant target, boldin was definitely on in the playoffs, but no more than our other receivers, losing boldin doesnt break that chemistry, it sets us back a little bit, but nowhere near as much as the injuries and the patchwork oline and TE group we had, along with our primary playmaker being out 6 weeks, and our star workhorse being overweight and injured all year. i do not buy your theory at all because it is not logical, and im starting to wonder why you are even a ravens fan. boldin absolutely did not deserve nearly 7m last year to just play out his contract and walk, which causes us to miss out on quite a few key players we now have, if you believe boldin was worth 6.5m a year then please apply for a job at the cowboys or browns front office, they would probably love you there.

Ozzie Newsome has been with the Raven's a very long time. He deserves substantial credit for what we have achieved in the past.  The question now however is whether Ozzie Newsome is part of our future?  Sometimes to move forward, one has to look back in order to cut the ties to the past that further growth.  It is this fans fervent and sincere belief that such is the case as it pertains to Ozzie Newsome.  It is time for a change. It is time to move forward.

And that isn't what I was talking about.  I understand that you do not have much faith in Ozzie... even after putting together a Super Bowl Winning Team in 2012.  And it is fine that you feel that way, it's your opinion.

I love what Ozzie has done with this team, and have only anticipation for this year and what our capabilities are....  The entirely new offense, all the new weapons for Joe, the ramped up defense, and especially the entirely new scheme...

That being said, I would appreciate you not twisting my words around to infer that how you feel is how I feel.  I thank you for that in advance......

Boldin would have been just as terrible in last seasons offense as everyone else.

Torrey had over 1,000 yards last year & after the First-half of the season was Averaging 17+yards a catch. I know it's hard for you guys to admit it but just because Flacco has a bad year please don't take away from what our other players do.......Also Marlon Brown tied Torrey's record with the most TD in a rookies first year.

btw Poes Crows you're one of the best posters on this site.
