Ray Rice Suspended 2 Games

886 posts in this topic

People distrusting the media has gotten to the point where they're not even smart about it: it's almost always unbridled cynicism and distrust. Sources remain anonymous because it could mean losing their job if their name gets out. I've even used a source who didn't want to be named because he was sketchy about being put on a Government blacklist. Name your source and risk losing them.

And like you say, a reporter's reputation is gold dust in this era. Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport are two who particularly value theirs. Look where that got them.

Tell me about it!

One thing that I keep reading from those who are saying 4+ games is that the NFL wants to set a precedent with this suspension.  They've faced a lot of criticism for marijuana garnering larger suspensions that assaults and other physical crimes.  They want to start showing that they don't take this stuff lightly.

That's a huge point. This offseason has given them a lot of PR work to get done. I wouldn't be surprised if you were right about handing both Rice and Greg Hardy some heavy suspensions (might have to avoid Ravens Talk at this rate).

Tell me about it!

There's not trusting everything you read and there's not trusting anything you read. Ah well, that's the reader's business I guess. *shrugs*

Would a reporter just make up information?

Yes.

They do it all the time.

I rather wait until Training camp once they put on the pads to give my  full assessment of Forsett. Any body can look great in shorts and no contact.

But the fan boyz dont understand that.

Supposedly. They could have been just saying that to get an admission from Rice. I honestly didn't realize the NFL had any jurisdiction to get that video evidence

I don't think Rice's lawyer would allow him to admit to that w/ out seeing the tape.  If that tape of the incident does exist, it's evidence and Rice's attorney is entitled to see that tape.

Should be less than what Rapelesburger got that's for sure. He got like 4 games and reduced to 3 didnt he. So 2 should be about right

Calling someone a [profanity deleted] is not a place for a nickname or a laughing matter. It is a serious accusation and a serious matter. As is the ray rice matter. These incidents should be treated much more severely than being proven to smoke weed which is 4 games then a year iirc. I really think stepping back and realizing the seriousness of these situations is in order. Not just pointing you out. I have seen many use this nickname. And it's in no way funny.

The more I see on Twitter about Ray's possible suspension, the more annoyed I get.  I have the feeling that its going to be a 6 game ban, which will irk me tremendously.

I understand that the NFL is in a unique position here.  They can't give him too little of a suspension, because the media will blow up in his face and talk about how the punishment was far too low.  But if they give him a suspension that is long, the only people that will really get annoyed are Ravens fans.

I think they're going to throw the book at him to be honest.  Unfortunately, I don't think Ray is the person that you should try to make an example of.  He is an exemplary NFL player.  He has never had off the field issues before, he has worked extensively with the community in the offseason, and he has never really done anything similar to this ever.  While no one can condone what Ray did, it seems to me that he made a huge error on judgment after drinking far too much alcohol and sorely regrets what he did.  I don't think he regrets it because he got caught, I think he regrets it because this is not who he is as a person.

I still maintain that 3 games is a good number.  Anything more and the NFL is just trying to make an example out of him.

Yeah, that Aaron Wilson is such a liar. LaCanfora and Schefter are horrible liars too. Please. If you think reporters make stuff up then you're just plain misinformed.

You'd love this, but 2 games is what it'll be.

He would..

And forsett/pierce would never replicate what rice can do on the field.

I think the ceiling pierce can have is becoming the next Ben Tate or Moreno.

It can get cloudy sometimes with the speculation columns on certain sites but those aren't the reporters like Wilson, Schefter, La Canfora. Those guys report the news.

I think Pierce is very similar to Tate. Good complimentary guy but can't handle the workload that comes with being a feature back. Kinda glad Cleveland went to Tate to be their guy since I don't think he does it for them. The first few weeks will be tough for us at rb depending on how long Rice is out, hopefully Taliaferro can do well for us, seems like a guy who would do well in our system.

They may not but when PFT comes out with an 'unnamed source' I'm not going to 100% trust it.

Being anonymous can give you the freedom to say what you really feel with repercussion OR it can give a person with an agenda a platform to spread falsities, misleading a media member OR it can give a dishonest media member something to get clicks.

I don't think anyone considers these guys outright liars. But the fact is that a lot of "reporters" and "analysts" take a snippet and embellish it with suppositions and assumptions with the intent of making a somewhat meaningless piece of info into a "breaking story".  It happens all too often, especially in the media soaked environment we live in today.

Some can be trusted to wait and confirm certain things prior to releasing a story and it is pretty obvious who can be trusted and who can't.

Other players in Rices position have received no more than a 4 game suspension. If you go off history, it should be 2-4 games. If it is anymore than 4, they'll be setting a new precedent. I think it should be 4 myself.

I miss Paul Tagliabue

Well, LA is still missing a football team thanks to Paul. Clearly, Jacksonville and Carolina had to have football teams.

Rice gets 6-8 games. Watch. Goodell is going to do it and then give a big hero no toloerence speech and toot his own horn.

I miss Paul Tagliabue

Do you really, though?

I can vouch for the fact that the late William Donald Schaefer shed a tear when he learned Baltimore had been turned down. I was standing right next to the then-governor at a Chicago airport hotel when former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue made the announcement.

In all my years of covering Baltimore sports, that was the worst moment.

I wrote a newspaper column saying that if the league wasn’t going to play fair, it was time to go steal some city’s team – not a nice thing for someone from Baltimore to write after the experience of having lost the Colts to Indianapolis. But oh, it was a galling day.

Tagliabue, remember, was the one who suggested Baltimore should build a museum instead of a football stadium for a new team to replace the Colts.

Not to mention that the biggest scandal/black eye the NFL has gotten in quite some time - concussion lawsuits and settlement(s) - were enabled because of neglect and cover-ups of Rozelle and Tagliabue.

3-4 is what i think it will be. Since the NFL has looked at the tape ,that probably bumped it from 1-2 to 3-4 games.

Hell would have frozen over before the NFL would have "given" Baltimore a team back then. That's why the Maryland Lottery was established in order to fund "Give Baltimore the Ball".  Which became futile because of exactly what John Eisenberg said...  All that money raised, and the media and promotion of it, and then the NFL slapped us in the face with giving the teams to Carolina and Jacksonville. Funny how we look back and don't remember certain details of stuff.....  Twice passed over...  SMH...  That's why when Cleveland came to Baltimore, it left the trademarks and "franchise" behind; to allow them to re-establish as an expansion.  The Houston Oilers did the same, but they became the Houston Texans instead...  You'll never see what happened to Baltimore EVER happen to another city again.

Be careful what you wish for....  Taglibue wasn't all that and a bag of UTZ chips too...

I say Rice gets 2 games......

LT might mess around and take 3rd down away from Rice as well

I could also see this.

Where is this suspension? Lol. It's like Santa Claus. You keep hearing about it but it never comes.

I agree. The legal part is done. Rice has spoken with him. What's the hold up? At least we'd have an idea of what we're dealing with and can plan accordingly.

I'd say it would at least have to be handed down by camp so we know what we're dealing with and who may be the replacement.  That's still a few weeks out yet.  When I had started this thread, it had really sounded like they were going to announce it that week, but it is the NFL after all.

Considering Roethlisberger was originally handed six games, and he had a prior history of boneheadedness, I think Rice will get 4 games

Hi guys, Pack fan here. Just curious as to who besides Pierce or Forsette might get the nod at RB. (I need a back for a REALLY deep fantasy league, and I'm desperate)

As for the Roethlisberger comparison, that doesn't hold up. His issues were he said/she said, and he never admitted to anything, and he was never found guilty. Rice is on camera. I think he'll get 6, but I hope it's less because I have him as one of my fantasy backs.

Anyway, can anyone give me a sleeper on the team to steal carries early? Someone took Pierce before I had a chance.

Pierce is probably going to get the majority of the carries.  Forsett should see some time on 3rd downs.  Taliaferro is probably the only other RB and I doubt he sees more than a handful of carries per game.

Bernard Pierce will be the guy assuming his body doesn't disintegrate mid-season. As for the difference between Forsett and Lorenzo Taliaferro, it seems like fan speculation at this point (personally I think LT's a good Kubiak RB and a sleeper candidate to surprise non-fans, but in fairness I haven't paid as close attention to the workouts as some). Good luck with the league, and if there are any Steelers fans I hope you belt them. ;)

I kind of agree about the Roethlisberger comparison. His incident was a bit iffier, but he also had the prior stuff. That said, I agree with what rmw said a page or few back in that the league could well try to set a new precedent so the Roethlisberger stuff won't even matter.
