Off man coverage is very similar to zone coverage and that was my point. Man coverage, tight man coverage is mostly just you using your athletic ability to stick like glue to the receiver. Playing off is not as much about athletic ability but more about the mental side of it. You have to use your instincts, it's more about reading the routes, playing the ball. That's what young corners always struggle with. They're all 80-90% better at playing man to man, tight coverage, because all it really takes is athletic ability. The really good football players (corners) that lack those athletic skills however are almost always really good in off coverage, because that's what they've been doing in college for years in order to get by. They would have not survived if they'd played tight man coverage. So they are way ahead mentally. Jimmy is a good example. Patrick Peterson is. Milliner is. All those big, athletic freaks. They're all studs in press coverage and tight man coverage. Off coverage? Zone? Not so much. Not saying Jimmy can't play zone or off, but he's a natural press corner, that's his strength. Flowers is the exact opposite. And those guys are usually the ones to make a successful transition to FS if they're being asked to.

You're trying to oversimplify things so grossly just to make a point. I'm done trying to discuss this before you research some

blow up his twitter. @BFlowers24

Let him know that he needs to make a visit to Baltimore before he makes a decision! Chargers don't know how to win in the playoffs, would be a mistake to sign there unless he cares about the whether more then winning lol

You can stop blowing up his Twitter, he left San Diego without a contract.

Free agent CB Brandon Flowers left his Chargers visit without a contract.

It could be a matter of the Bolts simply waiting for Flowers' price to come down. Flowers hasn't scheduled any other visits, but has been connected to the Steelers, Patriots and Lions. He shouldn't remain out of work long.

Okay, I'm going to expand, but no, press man corners (don't say tight man to man coverage because off man can be tight coverage, it's just a different form of man) are not usually the more athletic ones. They are usually the bigger corners who aren't necessarily blazing fast (can be) and lack the change of direction from drills like the three cone and all that due to stiff hips. Think of guys like Sherman and Browner as the prototypes. Big guys who aren't fast, but excel at pressing and dictating where the man goes. Conversely, Smith is really fast for someone his size, but presses really well.

Off man is not a coverage for poor athletes. You need to be a very fluid athlete with good change or direction and speed. Yes, you need to be able to read and react, but you also have to have the fluidity to break on the ball while changing direction and then have the speed to get there. It's far more about technique, something young corners will struggle with the most, rather than mental prowess. Think of the guys like Webb, Trufant, Flowers, Hall as guys who are good at off man. All excellent athletes who have great fluidity and speed. They are excellent athletes. However, there are big guys who are good in off man. Jimmy is actually an example of someone who has actually gotten miles better in off man coverage. He was almost solely used in press man coverage at Colorado (much like Milliner at Alabama, not that he doesn't have the mental aspect down), so he was very raw when he came out. So far, he's gotten far better at it. Another example is Patrick Peterson who is amazing athlete despite being a big cornerback.

Zone I will agree requires lots of mental awareness, far more than man coverage. Instead of just following one man, you have to be aware of anyone that comes into your zone, and if no one does, read the receivers and figure out if you need to drop into the flat, drop deep, go middle, etc. Far different from man in the responsibilities and the mental awareness required.

Not nearly as cut and dry as you're trying to make it

Ravens still very interested in free agent CB Brandon Flowers

Interesting!

It should be no surprise. While I liked the Franks and Ross signings, Ross is injury prone and lacks the speed he once had, and Franks is a career special teamer. Flowers gives an immediate number three

I'd trust this a lot more if I'd ever heard of the source.

I've seen that Flowers plans on making one more visit sometime this week, and will then decide between that mystery team and the Chargers.  The Falcons, Vikings, Steelers, and Lions are all reportedly out of the running and/or interest was overstated.  The Ravens, Patriots, and Texans are still considered to be in the running, and there are some unnamed teams poking around as well.

Flowers just signed with Chargers. Bummer. It's a good fit for him though.

Yep it makes sense for him.  I'm not too bummed out since I didn't expect him here anyways.

Reportedly only a 1 year deal. Would have taken him all day, but he propably likes San Diegos scheme and location more

Good opportunity there.  He's the clear cut #1 there.  He gets a 1 year deal and enters the market where CBs got large amounts of money this offseason.  No brainer there.

that's other mystery team was the 49ers he took a visit on Friday.

Before signing with the Chargers, Brandon Flowers visited the 49ers on Friday. SF obviously looking for more help at CB where they can.

Finally, mods please bury this thread in the NFL teams page. Thank you.

Nah, the Ravens play the Chargers next year, correct? Good discussion for that alone

I think the chargers have the much better roster overall than the chiefs at this point. I'm not sure what Kansas City is doing this offseason. I think they take a big step back. San Diego could push Denver. They are built better to match up with Denver than a lot of teams.

I didn't think we would get him and knew we wouldn't when we got Ross and Franks. Good place for Flowers to go however, that weather is nice down there

Flowers would have been nice, but we went the affordable route instead. I'm ok with it.

I'm mad we didn't get him... I don't like this off-season too much, but I'm ok with the affordable route.

One-year deal worth a max of $5 million. Good fit for him and SD adds more at CB with him and Verrett. The new SD GM and HC are doing a good job.

I disagree who heartedly. The chiefs have a much better roster overall. They have a fairly complete defense (altho corner is now a need). Additionally, their holes on offense are ones that are easy to find and fix (guard, tight end)
