2014 Injury Thread

It'd be pretty ridiculous if the first ACL of the year happened on the first day of OTAs, but after last year it wouldn't be a surprise.

The Cowboys could be in trouble.  While the injury itself appears to be non-contact, the play was not.  That violates the CBA.

Cowboys LB Sean Lee has been told that he has a torn ACL and is expected to miss the entire season, per @Edwerderespn.

Yup, it's an ACL.

The annual ACL Tear Festival is under way!

Hmm... gee I don't know maybe part of why they are getting injured like this is because of non-contact rule in the CBA. We have never had this many injuries before, but now because of less practice and less contact the players aren't conditioned right and their bodies aren't up to par. Then by the time contact happens, this happens. Players wanted to work less and be conditioned less and they are paying the price.

That is an interesting theory that I've seen a few times, but it's difficult to definitively prove.

On the bright side, if that is how physical of a Guard Martin is or if it's a glimpse of what's to come, they made the right choice. That is a tough gritty type of guard you want, especially in the run game. Murray is going to love running on the right side with Martin creating running lanes.

It's funny on PFT I see comments about how it's a curse because they didn't take Johnny and people saying well if they took him this wouldn't have happened, etc lol.

One thing I found interesting was talk of how Chip Kelly didn't run tackling in his training sessions last season. As a result, the Eagles were pretty average at tackling but generally stayed healthy (hell, you'd imagine Pitta wouldn't have gotten hurt if we did that). It's basically "I knew a guy who knew a guy" stuff so take it for what it's worth, but it's an interesting thing to think about.

Also, would it be in bad taste to make a forum game out of guessing how many ACL tears we see this season? I suspect it'll become a hot topic again, and sooner rather than later.

I agree with this. I was going to post this earlier, but the injury was non contact. Still, the lower amount of padded practices has definitely coincided with higher rates of more serious injuries, like torn ACL's

Yes, that would be in very bad taste..... We have the injury thread, and that is somewhat more appropriate.

That I do agree with....  The Player's Association may have to eventually look at this as it becomes more apparent.

I don't think playing in pads has anything to do with ACL injuries. Foxworth torn his knee up backpedaling on turf.

It's not even necessarily a matter of conditioning, either. Sometimes you get your foot caught on something, your knee torques the wrong way, and it's a freak incident.

Just seems like there are many more than what we use to have.....

Maybe? I won't pretend to have the numbers but I'd be interested to see them.

Also notice how sloppy tackling has got around the league as a whole? I think that is another casualty of the non-contact drills in the CBA. It just seems tackling can't be taught anymore due to the no contact thing and now they don't know how to wrap a guy up properly.

I think that happens way before the CBA was enacted or the NFL in general. Guys get by without it and never learn it properly - or, probably more likely, never want to learn it.

Lee is such a talented player, but he is always getting injured.  Never good to see players like him go down.

You might really enjoy this. It's an informative piece about ACL tears, including how they happen, the latest on medical advances, the AP situation and how they can be reduced in the future.
