Calling Manziel A Backup

According to Herman Edwards, it was a bad thing that the Browns owner referred to Johnny Manziel as a backup?  Yeah, I get it that he was drafted in the first round and all, but that still isn't a guarantee that he would immediately be a starter.  I seem to remember that even though Flacco was drafted in the first round, he was going to be a backup QB for us behind Boller and Smith for the first year until Boller busted his shoulder and Smith got a lung infection.  So was it really wrong that Haslam basically told Manziel "Look, you're the backup, if you want to be a starter, earn it." when really it's how teams are when it comes to a number of their draftees?

Just something for the media to talk/whine about relating to Johnny Football. The team could say anything - or nothing at all - and it would still be a 'story'. Why aren't the Browns talking about Manziel?

Just dumb stuff to fill air time.

The problem I have is an owner telling his QB he needs to act like a back up. Hmm ... Don't you want your QB to act like and strive to be THE guy? A back up QB is a guy who is ok sitting behind the starter and picking up a pay check. I want my QB to think and act like a starter; Just like Flacco has done since day 1.

I am hoping this is not the case.
I am really looking forward to seeing this guy get blown up week three.

Thats exactly what the problem is. You need to breed competition.

Just about the only competition that I've seen in Cleveland in my years of studying football is the ongoing competition to get out.

It's a great thing. Johney is too cocky and Hoyer looked very good last year. Every other 1st round pick (even HOFs) has have to earn it, Johny as well. Hoyer is probably the best QB in new Browns history.

That actually makes me sad.  :(

Poor guy.  His joy is going to be so short term...

Oh yea, it's both sad and ridiculous.  In his defense, I don't believe he knew he was being recorded.

Plus, he was probably quite inebriated....

They already have songs about Johnny Football aka Johnny Cleveland.

On a side note: Why does he look so small?

Dang, link doesn't work for me.  Do you have to be a facebook member to view?

I've been thinking the same thing about his size too.  Then I saw his "stats".  6 feet, 207 pounds.  Yup, he's gonna get killed in the AFC North.....

Fixed the link. Don't know why it did that originally.

Yeah - I was thinking the same thing - welcome to the AFCN Johnny! LOL

Well, that song made me want to vomit.    LOL

Did he grow up in Texas?  I'm sure he's gonna love Ohio, PA, and Maryland winters.

I would have to agree with you, even though I do understand why as it keeps his ego in check. Though why would Ray Farmer essentially say the same thing by saying Hoyer is better "by a substantial margin" than Johnny Football. I get keeping his ego in check and making sure he doesn't get a big head but this is ridiculous.

First the owner, now the GM. Why the hell they draft him then if they were going to treat him like this?

Hoyer's not that good. I don't know why people keep mentioning his name because he went 3-3 as a starter. He might've been better than Weeden, but he also started games before everyone realized how good Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron were playing. I think most of Hoyer's success should've been attributed to them the way it was after he got injured.

Manziel brings with him the next Tebowmania, and regardless of when he starts, you can assume there will be fans picketing and renting out billboards for his candidacy.

Exactly. They knew who Johnny was and drafted him anyways. That attitude/ego whatever you want to call it is part of Johnny's make up as a QB - and made him very successful. I mean if you really thought Hoyer was the guy, you would have spent that 1st on someone else. For the Browns, it's unfortunate that they're already messing this situation up with all the comments and what not, seems typical 'Browns' lol.

He was like 2.25 and 0 as a starter with the Browns and played pretty well given the conditions. When you're a franchise like Cleveland that has gone through more than 10 quarterbacks, you're going to be optimistic when someone starts playing at a competent level and winning. I'm not surprised they're happy. He was leading them to victory for once.

3-3 for Cleveland is almost as many wins as they get most seasons.

Oh, I guess he came in when they were 0-3. Still, that's only two wins- an even smaller sample size.

Maybe Weeden is so bad that an average backup QB came into the game for him and actually looked good in comparison

- Mike Pettine, says the Browns' starting QB won't be determined by popularity.

Wow, they're really building up his confidence.    LOL

I think they're handling it the right way. They can't just hand him the job. He's used to being the guy and the star, so they're making sure he knows his place. It's not that odd to me
