The NFL has got some explaining to do..............

So how is it the NFL knew about his reality show but never informed any of the 32 teams about it?

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatchthe NFL knew that Michael Samhad struck a deal for a documentary to be televised on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network before the draft.  But the NFL reportedly didn’t share that information with the league’s teams.

Rams cut him in 3.... 2... 1...

It will really be a circus if the Rams cut him before the season starts.

If the Rams can just remove themselves from it then they should be fine. If they do decide to cut him and somebody asks them about it, they can just do what Mike Ditka did and say "Next."

:34853_doh:  I have to remind myself that he's young, likely a wee bit naive about how his actions can change perceptions, and that he's probably listening more to his agent, who has an interest in getting Michael Sam's name out there to get lots and lots of $$$.

Still, if the dude wants to make sure to get the respect he wants, he needs to put his nose to the grindstone and show that he's the Michael Sam who was a star player at Mizzou who had the cameras on him for his play, not the mediocre player we saw at the combine who is now going to have a reality show.  If he clearly isn't picking up the playbook during training camp and he's not even trying to get past blockers during preseason games, the Rams should cut him, social justice warrior bloggers be damned!

If Sam were to take a moment and think about it, he should put off the show until he's actually made the team, and proven that he can be focused on football first.

Basically this.

I can understand why he's doing it as everything every player does is about the $$$$$, but he was already facing the "he only came out to get attention and boost his draft stock" stuff.

Although it can't be fun knowing that you'll end up being scrutinised the world over for everything you do - and how it'll be seen in the bigger picture irrespective of his own personal interests.

"Michael Sam the football player"

Rightttt.  I couldn't care less what his sexual preference is.  Thats his life and that's all fine and dandy.  The above quote is why this is a terrible move for him.  Coming out explicitly stating that he doesn't want to be known as the gay football player.  Well doing this show reinforces the character he's said he doesn't want to be.  It's not so much that he's doing the show as much as it is he's doing the show after some of the statements he's made.  I don't blame him for cashing in being that he's a fringe prospect anyways, but to come out and say you don't want any added attention and then proceeding to agree to a TV show doesn't really support your claim.

He'll be out of the NFL within 2 years folks. Bank on it. I honestly think the rams took him because of publicity.

They could've had football motivations as well.

They could've had football motivations as well.

"Let's go get Michael Sam" was the quote from the locker room, which certainly sounds more like "let's break the barrier" than "this is the top rated guy on our board". I really don't think it was about him as a player. The Rams had consecutive picks so it's not like they were missing out on a prospect they wanted (what are the odds they had two "can't miss" guys after 230 selections?).

According to Michael Silver: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000349452/article/st-louis-rams-draft-michael-sam-make-nfl-history

When Fisher announced his intention to draft Sam, the former Missouri star hoping to become the NFL's first openly gay player, there was a perceptible buzz in the Rams' war room, largely because no one else saw it coming.

It really sounds like it was about him being openly gay and any football aspect would just be gravy.

ugh i hate the world, i mean plenty of other good players went drafted and got picked up in free agency but they don't get any special treatment because they are straight. Why does he have to make a thing out of this instead of blending in and just trying to be a good football player. Anyways i'm with you guys in saying that he would probably be a distraction with this reality show garbage to any team he went to. It's all about fame and the almighty dollar I guess.

Seems like his agent woke up and realized mixing reality TV with football is bad. Very very bad. Im still laughing my butt off about the show airing on the Oprah Winfrey network. Lol.
