If we're going to continually hear this argument can we at least please get the facts correct?

The Giants did NOT have a great defense - they were ranked #27. Their offense however was in the Top 10.

Let's also not pretend that these SB teams with stout defenses had pitiful offenses such as ours was last season. All were in the Top 19. Even our defensive SB win of 2000 our offense was ranked #18.

Not saying they had "pitiful" offenses but they weren't stacked or didn't have a "true #1 wr" either by any means. Was Doug Baldwin or Golden Tate a true #1?

This year's offense already isn't even close to the same offense we had last year. Is Ed Dickson going to be our #1 TE this year? No. Is Gradkowski going to be our starting center? No. Is Shipley going to be our starting LG? No. Is Jacoby going to be our #2 wr? No. Is Dallas Clark going to be our #2 TE? No. Will Monroe be learning a completely new offense mid season? No. Is Jim Caldwell our OC? No. Are we going to be running Cam Cameron's offense? No. So why are you saying "pitiful offenses such as ours last season?" Last season is over, this is a completely new offense in contrast. Pitta back, KO back, Zuttah at Center, Steve Smith at #2 wr, Owen Daniels at #2 TE, Kubiak at OC with a new offense.

Also when is someone going to tell me how we realistically missed out on a true #1 wr in the draft or FA?

Well, in all fairness, they were still the "better" defense in 2011.

You could also look at the 15-1 Packers who had the highest scoring offense that season as well as the 3rd best overall offense. Guess what? they had the worst defense in the NFL and got bounced in the divisional round by none other than the NY Giants.

Not really. In yards allowed Giants were ranked 27 & NE #31. But in points allowed NE ranked higher.

That #27 defense of the Giants held the greatest offense ever (to that point) to 14 points. How many points did their amazing top-ten offense score in that game?

Why are you calling them the best offense ever until that point? They weren't even the best offense in the league that year. In yardage they were #2 and in PPG they were #3.

Their amazing offense scored 21 pts. And NE scored 17.

Unless you were talking about 2008 again - I'm confused now. Don't know why both teams had to be the same for those 2 SBs.

Isn't the point though - balanced teams win championships. Doesn't have to be perfectly balanced - but while a #27 ranked defense has won a SB, a #27 ranked offense has not.

Part of the reason they had the worst defense is that teams were forced to pass against them more often. In turn, they chose to pass often, which is why they had such a high ranking offense. Actually, a lot of offense/defense stats has to do with how often you choose to pass vs run. But that's why stats like pure yards (and even pure points) can be misleading. Green Bay's D had lead the league in interceptions by a wide margin in 2011 and that should probably go into the equation.

New England generated a lot of turnovers because they'd get so far ahead and teams passed to catch up. The Packers and Patriots both found out the hard way that that is not a viable way to win. When teams could play them close and keep up with their offenses, they lost

They were still a pretty awful defense, but you're right in that they forced turnovers to benefit the offense. They were very good at getting tunovers but also not turning the ball over.

Considering the guy you quoted was talking about 2008, I figured we were all on the same page.
