Young Dominant Defense in the Making

Agreed, but what you highlighted is also the key scheme difference between the 4-3 and 3-4

That's partially true. He'll have more opportunities to shoot gaps and just chase the ball around in a 4-3. What makes him such a good player is not his technique but his athleticism, and the 4-3 would better use his talents. The 3-4 puts a lot of emphasis on using good technique.

People are already giving Smith the job too...

I would guess Smith at MIKE and Mosley at WILL to begin this season, but I would not be surprised to see Mosley at MIKE and Brown at WILL by the end of the year or beginning of next year. Smith was a good on field captain and ok in coverage, but he was a liability in run support last year. People were a little too amped about him. Average MIKE at best, above average WILL.

I think Smith had a pro bowl caliber year, may not be a thumper, but he;s coverage skills are very, very good and he is a great field captain. That said, I think a switch to a 4-3 D would make sense, but whatever.

Pretty much. i think the 4-3 is easier to run, but a great 3-4 is much harder to stop.

Exactly, and it's so difficult to build a great 3-4. In order to truly have a great 3-4, you NEED guys that are not only technically sound, but physical specimens too.

I personally would rather run a 4-3, but yes, look a us around before 2012 or SF/Chiefs 9before everyone got hurt on the chiefs) now.

The 4-3 vs 3-4 talk is negligible as the Ravens play both. They basically play a 4-3 under formation

(Scroll down to the 4-3 under and it will look familiar).

For the most part, our NT plays shade 1, our DT plays the 3, and our DE plays the 5. Our Rush LB plays the 5 on the other side, making Suggs pretty much a 4-3 DE (if you remember he argued for DE money with his deal). So in essence, those 4 players are in a 4-3 front. The major thing that throws people off is our SAM LB (Upshaw) plays the 7 like a 3-4 OLB instead of playing off the ball like a 4-3 OLB. Again, arguing about switching to a 4-3 or 3-4 or whatever is not applicable as the Ravens play both and mix and match their defense so that it is chaotic for the opposing offense.

All of this helps us draft BPA on defense, as we do not need to worry about a player fitting a scheme. We are flexible with our scheme, so there is a spot for anyone.
