Ravens who could get Cut

144 posts in this topic

Not really sure where to put this.  Probably not deserving of it's own thread, but since we're talking about guys who might/might not make the team, here you go...

Inerested to see if the Ravens place a waiver claim on Daryl Richardson. They're at least considering it. More NFL talk ahead @1057TheFan

Too late...Jets snagged him.

Joe Flacco

Jimmy Smith

Torrey Smith

all of them need to be cut

I admit, a year ago, I would have agreed with you on Jimmy. He looked like a bust for so long, but really turned the corner in the last season, now he's suddenly one of our most valuable players. Just goes to show, that being hater never pays off.

Sometimes I wonder how next season would look like without Joe. Would we be picking in the top 10 in 2015? I think so.

So what are you saying? What are the options: 1) carry 3 QBs; 2) cut Wenning & re-sign him to the PS; or just cut him? 2&3 don't make sense, we will have wasted a draft pick, and if we carry 3 QBs, we'd have to cut someone else at a position we traditionally fill.

I agree with this 100% it is extremely unlikely that we carry 3 quarterbacks. Also didnt we go with a 6th round pick developmental quarterback prospect who was a rookie as our only backup quarterback in 2011 (Tyrod)? If Wenning shows anything at all then it is worth only keeping 2 quarterbacks especially with the amount of talent there is having that extra spot open could keep a potential steal around (someone like Seamster as the #3 cornerback eventually). Also I highly doubt Tyrod is going to bring any sort of trade offerings at all, I highly doubt anyone would even offer a 7th round pick for him. With the run of quarterbacks that went this year and the potentially good looking list next year theres just no way. I know it is not the best spot to be in but the Ravens have done it before and I dont really know the comparison but I can't see Tyrod having been much more NFL ready when he was a rookie as Wenning is now

Yeah, it's safe to say Cody is gone.  We got 15 run stuffing DTs on the roster now, we don't need the 1 taco stuffing DT anymore.

Yet for some reason we resigned him.

At the time we re-signed him, we didn't have that depth.  There was 0 harm in signing him to his minimum, no guaranteed contract.

I could see K Juice being a surprise cut with this new offensive regime. To me, Juice was a Caldwell pick foolishly attempting to emulate what he had in Indy without the correct personnel across the offensive board to support that type of offense. Juice is just an odd man out IMO.

Would very much surprise me. I can see him having an increased role. Maybe make a James Casey like impact.

Are you familiar with Kubiak's offense or…?

I'm gonna say that's a definite no

Good point. I guess I just can't imagine the Ravens committing to an all out attack where Juice could be used like Casey or Kuhn. I guess I am being narrow-minded with last year's pick. Truthfully, the Ravens aren't going to waste a 4th round pick without giving him a real opportunity to compete after he's developed to his max potential.

Canty played well last year and isn't making that much. Plus depth is critical for the DL. Its extremely unlikely he gets cut.

I'd love it if Juice & Gilmore can have impacts like Kuhn & Crabtree had for the packers a couple season ago.

I can't say he played well last year. He was adequate. I agree that it's unlikely for him to be released. We don't have a lot of proven talent or experience on the DL outside of him and Ngata. The only sensible way he gets cut is if we go strictly 4-3, but that won't happen. Even then, though, I'd prefer to keep him.

I was hoping he would provide more of a pass rush, but I thought he played the run very well.

Even at strictly 4-3, I think he'd stay since he was a starter at DT for the Giants and could at least help with the transition

Sometimes he did. He struggled handling two gaps and double teams when asked to do so.

Sorta, yeah, but the guys we have would be better fits at this point in time. I could see him stay, but he's not who he was with the Giants.

Will Happen:

Terrence Cody, NT

Jah Reid, OT

AQ Shippley, OG

Might happen:

Sam Koch, P

Gino Gradkowski, C

Tyrod Taylor, QB

Deonte Thompson, WR

Chris Canty, DE

Edit: Chris Canty could stay

DT is gone

Koch is gonna be fighting a uphill battle until the end of TC

Urchiel makes Gino expendable

Chris Canty has enough in the tank to be a solid backup guy until Timmy and Urben are properly seasoned in the defense

Taylor will get cut but he will land in 49ers or eagles territory probably. Reid, gone. AQ may stay since they put a draft pic in the get him.

If we went to 4-3 wouldn't that actually be something that Chris Canty is very familar with? I think he's been playing in 4-3 for most of his career.

Why has Derrick Hopkins been getting so much love on making the team?  I've seen that a ton on here and on other sites.  I like the guy, but we still have 47548 DL on the roster right now.

I answered this in an above post, but I'll go again. At this point in time, our younger players would be better fits for the 4-3, and Canty would be the odd man out.

Other than plenty of people on here apparently being Tech fans, he's actually stout against the run and provides a big run stuffing presence. He's not the best pass rusher, but he's certainly decent. He's also really quick and has a fast first step.

However, he's short. Like, really short. If a lineman gets their hands on him, he can be taken out of plays and handled 1 on 1 because he just doesn't have great length to fight them off or disengage. Could certainly stand to get stronger.

Played a lot of 1 T, but could switch to 3 T. People are probably hung up on the signing bonus. I think he has a shot to make it, but you never know. Could play DT in the 4-3 or likely play 3-4 NT. Plus, if you look at what Bruce_Almighty posted, the Ravens would have 8 defensive lineman with Hopkins on the roster, which is about right.

Had a feeling you'd chime in at some point lol.  It's nothing against the guy.  I like him and gathered some of the same things you just said when I was watching the tape, but I just don't see how he makes this roster.  Of course, if he comes in and looks like a superstar, he'll obviously make it.  However, his skill set doesn't translate to a "must keep on the roster" type of guy.  He looks like the perfect practice squad candidate to me, considering how many guys are in front of him in the pecking order.

Replied before I got my edit in.

No, he's certainly not a "must keep" and he'd be nothing more than really solid depth, but as Bruce_Almighty outlined, the Ravens would have seven defensive lineman without him on the roster, so him making it and the Ravens having eight isn't completely out of the question.

I can't see us keeping 8 at all, considering a lot of our time will be spent in the nickel and our OLB's would move up to the DL.  We were comfortable enough with 6 for most of last year.

They didn't have seven last year?

For a brief portion.  They had 7 due to Brandon Williams missing the first few games, but when he was fully healthy, Spears was cut.  Even with 6 on the roster, we routinely only activated 5 each game.

Was KLM on IR? I don't see Hopkins getting PT if he makes the roster, and I agree he's better suited for the practice squad, but we'll have to see. It's likely similar to the Furstenberg situation where fans are super hyped up and he doesn't amount to anything
