[News] How The Pick Went Down At No. 17

41 posts in this topic

It's a shame that the average Joe can never really know the details of those phone calls. What kind of "bonanza" were we looking for? I think, given the value of this years draft that I would have been satisfied with a swap of 1st rounders and a third and fifth rounder to move back from 17 to 28 or 30. Especially considering that you used the #17 pick on a player that will have no immediate impact for the Ravens. He maight not even start this year. I suppose it depends on wether he can beat out a player that is a year or two older but otherwise exactly like him in Arthur Brown. You guys dropped the ball big time here. Shame.

^^^ Exactly why I am glad the " average Joe " will never have anything to do with the Ravens' draft process.^^^

I don't know if any of you believe in fate or anything like that, but consider this:
2 of the players who were (realistically) among the highest on Ravens' board (Martin, Mosley) fell to the picks 16, 17.
We lost the tie-breaker to Cowboys who took Martin at 16.
Now, if Mosley turns out to be the next great HOF LB then I'd say that things worked out pretty amazingly in 2014 Draft for us. Fortune has favored Ravens' couple of times before, so let's hope for the best!

Still need to get that FS position sorted out, though. But most of the draft is still ahead of us and Oz is known for his great bargain deals after the draft as well, so don't lose hope just yet ;)

Arthur Brown compete for your spot don't let him take what's yours man fight for it we needed a free safety and we got him

Arthur Brown can play the weak side while Mosley plays the middle. They are not really competing for the same position.

Daryl Smith may be competition, however, but keep in mind Daryl is 32 years old. At some point, age will catch up with Daryl, while Arthur Brown catches up with experience.

We actually did need another ILB to replace McLain (and McLain). This guy was in the top ten on Ozzies board. Apparently much higher than the supposed first round safety talent (apparently the fan favorites weren't graded that well by the guys who actually know football -- go figure). I'm not sure why people have a problem with it. This gives us an upgrade at probably the single most important position on the D and gives brown a little more time to season and learn. Smith is already near the tail of his career. Oz said there are safeties we like in every round, so that need will get filled without overpaying.

So glad about Mosley - welcome to the Ravens, you have a real chance to get a ring out here! But I'm disappointed by how the picks developed: not so much before pick 17 (but Martin gone at 16 was kind of a practical joke), but after it - when all 4 top safeties went in the blink of an eye...

anyone complaining about this pick is insane. Mosley starts day one next to Smith and in a year or two the Ravens have one of the fastest and most versatile ILB combos in the league as long as smith continues to develop.

What a steal this guy is. Never thought that he would still be out there at 17. Another great pick. Ozzie and Eric are on their game again. The more that I think about this selection the more it makes me smile.

Only disappointed because I wanted Martin, but Mosely is a solid football player. So many good players left for round 2. Cody Latimer is a beast, Morgan Moses would give us much needed insurance on the o-line. Still very excited for round 2&3 tonight.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix projects as a strong safety much more favorably than as a free safety. We have a SS. Please make that distinction clear. That is part of the reason we passed on him.

We were in a win-win situation. To me OT Zach Martin would have really helped complete our offense and give us something special on the line for the next few years but such is life...

From all accounts Mosley is going to be great not good player. He has everything we need him to have and is a consistent guy at a position we need to be consistent.

I think there is some truth to the "Alabama guys are already closer to their potential" theory, meaning less upside and growth vs pro ready. At this position I'm perfectly fine with that. This position is about decision making and being a student of the game. Mosley looks ready to play and ready to be a master of our scheme.

People always want to act as if they know something. Unless you're a GM or have had experience as a GM, what gives you the confidence to question the practice of a successful FO?

I personally was hoping for Martin and thought we had him. If Dallas had any sense, they would have gone defense. But once he was gone, we definitely got BPA steal in Mosely.

Now on to rounds 2,3.

It's obvious from last year's draft and the first pick so far, the 3 most important traits we're looking for in our picks in order of importance are:

1. Character

2. Character

3. Character

I was watching his interview after the draft. When he was asked which player he compared and look to mold his game after and answered Luke Kuechly, I was ready for the season to start tomorrow!

Mosely is a great pick. It does, however, add to the speculation that the Ravens may have whiffed last year by selecting Arthur Brown. It is too soon to tell, of course, but I think the Ravens are disappointed in Brown so far.

Best available or admiting a miss on 2nd rounder Brown just last year?. Dallas needed defense way more than offensive line help and they passed on Mosely taking "our" real need in this draft, O-line help. We just missed on Martin by the flip of a coin................but why would Dallas let CJ go when they need defensive LBer help so badly? In Ozzie we trust but Castillo needed us to move up one spot and save our franchise QB from another season of looking up after every passing down. Is Jensen really that good? Can Jah Reid be counted on to get Ray&Joe back to the AFC North title? The Browns improved. Bengals improved. Steelers improved and we took the best available player---In Ozzie we trust?

1. The Cowboys biggest defensive need was safety, and they had their choice of Clinton-Dix and Pryor. They chose neither. So using your own logic (that they didn't choose Mosley when he filled a bigger need), that means that the Ravens were justified in not picking Pryor or Clinton-Dix, because the Cowboys didn't like them either.

2.You mentioned Jensen and Jah Reid, neither of which are in the running to start at RT, which is the only position on our offensive line that needs an upgrade right now. Naturally, because fans can't see more than 30 seconds into the future, they ignore the remaining draft picks and the 3-4 full months left in the offseason.

3. You can't call the Steelers pick an upgrade and call our pick not an upgrade, because there is no basis for that.

Love the pick.. Lock up that Defense which wins championships. We played it well.. still can get a solid WR.. Allen Robinson.. Jordan Matthews still on the board.. Also some good OL are there.. Alabama OL , UVA OL still on the board.. Id look at one of them in the 2nd round, maybe move up.. RBs are at full depth as none were selected in the first round.. Well played Ozzie.. Keep workin!

I predict 30 seconds into the future that Ryan Jensen&Jah Reid get the bulk of the snaps at RT if Ozzie can't get O-line help in this draft.
