Welcome to Baltimore CJ Mosley

Listening to the press conference right now. They're saying CJ can play inside and outside, he will find his way on to the field somehow otherwise we wouldn't have drafted him in round 1.

yeah OLB in a 4-3

Wouldn't be a shock to see another LB go the Ellerbe route. That would have Art peaking right before he's a Free Agent lol, typical.

I'm hoping both these young guys get to line up at ILB next to each other a la Patrick Willis and NaVarro Bowman.

My guess is Daryl gets cut after this season.

Unless he has an all pro type season. I don't see us paying a 33 or 34 year old linebacker big money if he's not elite and with some young guys waiting to get on the field.

Yeah, and it's not like he was given a ton of guaranteed money. I think the cap hit would only be a little over 2M, but this depends of course on Arthur Brown and Mosley being able to step up.

Pees seems to really like the idea of having competition at ILB so we should see the top 2 come out of this.

Pees must be so thrilled. He got four of the first picks on defense last year and then the first pick on defense this year. Likely to get one or more on these two rounds today

I still don't like the pick, but he's a very good player. I'm praying he stays healthy.

I want to see a lot more 4-3 looks with our LB corps and questionable DL depth.

Yeah the depth at DL has me concerned. Would be so awesome if Kapron Lewis-Moore makes an impact.

Just saw this on Twitter, Mosley will wear number 57.

For those that care about this stuff, new Ravens linebacker C.J. Mosley will wear No.57. Wore 32 in college but can't do that as a LB on NFL

Re-issuing Brigance's #57.

Why don't MLB/ILB ever go for a crazy number anymore like 99 or something? The last time I saw that was with Kendrell Bell and the Steelers. 99 would be my choice if I played MLB/ILB...well outside of 52 maybe.

That would be very exciting. I love Cj's potential in this defense, and I have him starting from day 1. I see Daryl holding down that other spot though for another year or 2. Our LB core is as good as any now.

WalterFootball gave us a C, which means it must have been a great pick.

He's a typical idiot Pats fan

Guys .. you have to remember, it is not about the salary itself ... it is about the difference between the salary cap hit and dead money. Next year, Smith will save a total of .75M in cap. So, he doesn't need an all-pro season this year to be around for next year ... all he has to do is be worth more than some other ILB we can pick up for .75M. Will he be that ... yeah, I think he will.

Now, 2016, his release would save 2.1 M. If both C.J. and Brown develop into solid starters, they might consider releasing Smith - if his performance is not worth that 2.1 M. 2017 .. now we're talking 3M, so it will be a long-shot that he sees that year.

People need to realize that outside the very special players these guys can't play every snap.  It's good to have a rotation.

Kruger was 99. and Jarret Johnson was 95.  Both of those guys were Linebackers, right???  That played more "defensive end".  I think we are going to see Suggs and Dumervil playing more as DE's this year.

Edit:...  Whoops...  sorry you did specify ILB.  So sorry.

Yep. ;)

OLB always wear numbers in the 90s. But MLB/ILB you hardly ever see them do that. Maybe they want to be known as true MLB's by wearing numbers in the 50s. I guess they're worried that wearing something in the 90s would make some people think they're not true MLB's. Why else would OLB's constantly wear numbers in the 90s? They want to be known as pass rushers I'd guess. You hardly ever see an OLB wear #52. Very odd how much thinking goes into this.

Really is one of the best picks we've made in a while (Draft position has a lot to do with that), could be a pro bowler in the near future once he settles into our defense. I'm not exaggerating when I say his game reminds me a lot of Luke Kuechly when he came out of college. Big comparison to live up to, I know.. but this kid was the 2013 Butkus award winner and consensus #1 ILB in the draft for a reason.

Welcome to Baltimore, time to go to work!!!

Noted, thanks for the input. Who you got in rounds 2&3? Need some knowledge. Much respect!

But we just added another ILB, so that's even more money we're investing in the ILB position. Had we not drafted an ILB at all I would have said cutting Smith makes no sense unless he's really terrible. But we now have to pay another ILB good money, he was a 1st rounder. And if Smith doesn't play well I don't see us keeping him on the roster next year because he won't be starting for us and he'd cost us not only extra money but also another roster spot. Plus I doubt he can play special teams. He doesn't strike me as a special teams demon. :D

Welcome C.J.! Looking forward to you continuing the Raven's tradition of superior defensive football.

I dont think anyone is knocking the actual pick, more the position. I think he'll be great for us, just think there were good players available at positions of need. Like I've said though, we'll see down the line. I think we see more 4-3 sets this year.

OLBs can wear numbers in the 50s. Brown, Bryant, Suggs, and Dumervil all have numbers in the 50s. I do agree  that one rarely sees a MLB in the 90s, and an OLB in the low 50s.

That was the first thing I thought when I saw our pick. I could see us doing DL at some point today or tomorrow to add a bit of depth too. Could be looking to help out Haloti or scheme a bit differently to face the run or something to that effect.

And if we don't see many 4-3 looks, I'll judge the pick by how well having Mosley and Brown duking it out for spots works. Then again, even if Brown gets pushed into a more situational/rotational role for a couple of seasons I think we'll look at extending him if he shows enough anyway. Ozzie's picked for two or three years in advance before.

This actually kinda feels like the FO going Ogden over Phillips in 1996 - we already had a LT and needed a RB. The FO must be really high on Mosley.

Wow. Watching Ozzie and Steve listen to Ray speak about Mosley made me feel some sort of way. Awesome.

Is there video of this? I couldn't find it and missed it on tv!

He basically said Mosley is a great pick. Smart linebacker, excellent leader that will get everyone lined up and listen to him, very instinctive, reads and then reacts. Can take the defense to the next level.
