The Vent Thread 2014 Draft

889 posts in this topic

Every draft one can go "wait - why not this guy or that guy?" usually though, you can see the idea behind the pick - get it and understand it.

This draft though - after our offensive woes this past season, the patchwork job with veteran FAs being a dismal failure, and the promise of "building the offense" - well, this draft is crap.

We've done nothing for the offense yet again.

The offense was just poor last season. No other way to say it for me! Down right embarrassing on many accounts! And yet, I agree that so far the FO has done nothing to truly help the offense improve in this years draft. This is why after that atrocious offensive performance the entire season last season; that I don't get hyped up by what we've read, seen or heard from Ozzie and crew about improving the offense the past few weeks. I'll believe it when I see it!

Exactly. You can't keep expecting these washed up veteran rentals to fill in for the development of actual offensive talent. Whatever one's position is on Flacco, the FO is not helping him.

Not to mention - we have no depth if someone gets hurt. How often are you going to get a pleasant surprise like Marlon Brown?

I assume that our FO really believes in everyones development... except for Gino mabye, cause he might lose his starting job next season. They must feel Marlon is our future #2, and that what's his nuts is our future RT.

This isn't an exciting draft but maybe we will be ok.

jeez y'all got me depressed. I'm not sure if its cause of everything I'm hearing from you guys or I'm just disappointed we didn't address any of our gaping holes

Why would you talk about a player like that that you obviously have no idea about? First he was projected in the 4th. Second he is a great blocker and has great hands. It might of been a little early for him, but another team might of wanted him late 3rd or early 4th. They probably covet his skills and he may turn out better than we think. He has the talent to be a talented #2 TE to go with Pitta in the future.

Here's a picture I took during the draft last year. You can tell what the NYJ fans think of the pick.

draftjets.png

Who was the pick they were so pissed off at? Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri. Last season's DROY, and I doubt you'll find a Jets fan out there who hates the pick now. Turns out their FO knew better.

I've seen enough of Gilmore that I'm content to give him the benefit of the doubt. Seems like a Kubiak pick, and if the Jets FO knew what they were doing there's no reason the Ravens FO can't turn out to be right here as well.

So Crockett, if you're reading this for some reason, welcome to Baltimore. :)

Sheldon Richardson is a stud!

And I hope Mosley and Jernigan become studs too.

As for our offense, we just have to work with what we got.

One of my friends is a FSU alum and he keeps raving about how great of a pick Jernigan is (he's not a Ravens fan btw, he's a Dolphins fan). He's made me feel better about it.

Which are?  And when you answer that...then you will realize why you are depressed by the draft so far. :D

lol this is a great post. I remember a LOT of fans and "experts" hating the Richardson pick because it didn't fill a need. Sound familiar?

Cheers mate. I took the screenshot a year ago (a year and two weeks ago actually :( ) just because I thought it was funny to laugh at the upset Jets fans. It just seems so relevant now. Might have to keep it on.

That whole situation actually reminds me of two or three players we have this year. I'm upset about not grabbing a WR, but I think we took the best players on the board with what he had in mind. And the more I think about it, the more content I am with the guys we have. The only real pressing need for day one was a FS, and I think we made the best-value pick of anyone in the draft. Every other need was more of a futures thing (including WR).

BloodRaven had a quality post in the Draft Thread too: http://boards.baltimoreravens.com/topic/58443-2014-nfl-draft-thread/?p=1849199

Yes, the Jets also didn't make the playoffs again, thanks to an anemic offense. Maybe the fans had a point.

BPA is the way to build great teams. Reach for need and you end up with the Gino Gradkowskis. Can't draft offense just for the sake of offense.

My friend from FSU has really sold me on Jernigan. Still not sure about Gillmore but I'll watch some tape and give him a shot. That's the one pick that really has me scratching my head.

The bad offense last year was largely due to the offensive line not being able to block anyone, particularly in the middle of the line. But they now have Zuttah and KO is back. Now the Ravens will be able to run again which changes a lot.

He'' probably be a big body like gronk that can pummel his way through defenses, he is certainly an upgrade imo over pitta and dickson, but to a lesser extent pitta.

Gillmore an upgrade over Pitta?

Let's not get carried away now.

Pitta is no spring chicken and I can easily see this new guy for you guys being a force that barges his way through with his impressive size and I have heard he has good hands too.

Well maybe I got a little carried away with the pitta comparison but you do need some good TE depth and a young guy with size and hopefully a willingess to learn is always a positive. Cj fierodiwcz would have been good if he was available though

Yes, the Jets also didn't make the playoffs again, thanks to an anemic offense. Maybe the fans had a point.

To be fair, they also had some average RBs and a rookie QB with no weapons.

We have a quality QB, a system known for getting the best out of players, a once-All-Pro RB with a point to prove and established weapons. Yes we're not the Falcons, Broncos or Lions, but Smith-Smith-Pitta-Brown-Daniels-Jones should be ample - and that's before anyone potentially emerges (and I still think we're taking a day three RB to run a committee of sorts).

I had WR1 as a futures need, so we could endure his early-career jitters without actually needing to rely on him and make for a smooth transition when Steve Smith leaves. I'm disappointed about not getting one, but there's no reason to think our offence can't be fine this season. We've improved a lot pre-draft.

The Jets fans hated the Richardson pick at first, but their opinion changed once they saw his production for them. If any of Mosley, Jernigan or Gilmore (plus whoever else we nab tomorrow) pan out, this place will be singing their praises and I can guarantee no-one who hates the pick now will come out and say they weren't a fan.

The Crockett take is fair play, but even though there's only 10 minutes of footage of him I've seen enough to make me comfortable with him. Not so much that I'm leaping up and down with the pick, but that he impressed me enough to give Kubiak and the scouts the benefit of the doubt.

Gun to my head, I think he'll be a solid dual-threat TE2 for us. In three years, we won't care where he was drafted. I'll own up if he busts, but he at least deserves a shot. There's not much more I can say about him until he actually plays a few snaps. I'm not as opposed to the pick as most, and because of that he's actually someone I'm quite excited to see now.

Agreed, we needed a blocker for the future, and Fiedorowicz would have been ideal. There are lots of teams I suddenly dislike.

The broncos make me hate them even more after this draft, also im disgusted how the niners found a way once again to get a s load of picks and use them all greatly in this draft.

Why are you scratching your head? I think he's a really solid fit for what we are looking for in this offense. I think everyone got lost in the fact of grabbing a big play TE type, but of you look at the current system that's not really needed. If we are going to run this WCO/ZBS type offense then we need to commit to it. We already have two move TEs, we needed a inline TE and Gilmore seems to be that. I agree with your post overall. Just wanted to know what it is about the Gilmore pick that has you puzzled

It's not really about his ability, I was literally scratching my head saying "who is that?"

Pretty lwt down we havent got a running back yet. Sad to see West go to Cleveland and Archer go to Pittsburgh. But all in all we have had a pretty decent draft. If we can find talent at running back, tackle, and receiver we will be alright. Anybody have any prospects at these positions we could possibly draft?

For running back, there's Storm Johnson (UCF), James White (Wisconsin), and Isaiah Crowell (Alabama State).

For tackle, there's Matt Patchan (Boston, he's actually one of the most athletic tackles in the draft), Seantrel Henderson (Miami), and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (McGill).

For receiver, there's Coleman (Rutgers), Jared Abbrederis (Wisconsin), and TJ Jones (Notre Dame).
