The Vent Thread 2014 Draft

889 posts in this topic

I still can't believe we took a backup QB in the 6th before we took a CB. We had 4 CB's so that is just stupid, especially the way this league is now. Jackson could easily be gone with another failed drug test and Chykie hasn't shown he should be a no. 3. So now we're going to count on UDFA's and cap casualties (completely unknown who will be there and if we can even afford one) to fill out the roster. And I haven't even mentioned how both our starters have extensive injury histories. There's no depth at the position where you have to be deepest at. Makes no sense to me.

With how much we've invested there, I'm going to be pissed if we aren't a top 5 defense next year.

The real problem is Pees, and he's not going anywhere.  I'd brace yourself for disappointment.

That was all the offenses fault though. That is what everyone said. I still have a few stones left over when I even hinted that the defense's 4th quarter fails were part of the reason we missed the playoffs.

"Harbaugh dismissed the notion that the defense was tired at the end of games.

"I don’t know that I saw signs of our defense wearing down," he said. "I’d have to probably look at that. I haven’t looked at it from that perspective. I didn’t think of it in those terms. I thought our defense was pretty stout right to the end."

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! You have been buzzed for trying to make this a Flacco thread.

You don't pay $120M to a guy you don't trust, especially if you thought the recent SB win was an anomaly. You start looking for his replacement. Don't think we did that this draft.Or the last one.

What would you say are the 2 positions this franchise has struggled drafting?

If we trusted him so much why not resign him the year prior when the numbers were so close? Joe bet on himself and won. The organization didn't have much of an choice in keeping him.

You forgot the obligatory "I believe in our guys."

Yeah I guess we're bound to have a drop off when all of our DC's leave for head coaching jobs.

The failure to extend drives and eat up time most certainly played a part in the defense fading in the 4th.

While there are quite a few questions regarding S Smith, Brown and Daniels, our QB (and team of course) won a SB with less at those positions.

If those guys play like they have shown they can in the past, especially S Smith, then as long as the OL doesnt suck as bad as it did last year, there is absolutely no reason why Kubiak and Flacco should not take us deep into the playoffs. If my assumptions above are not unreasonable, then I agree, Flacco and Kubiak should be lynched if we miss the playoffs again.

I believe, as good as the defense was already, it wouldn't have been too much to ask of them to play well this upcoming season without the FO having to heavily invest into them in the draft. How much more help do those guys need? Meanwhile, the Ravens offense has changed little and Kubiak and Flacco have to just get the most out of that.

Well yeah I know. I even argued with TOP proof.

Still - that is what I was told by the forum gods. It is all the offense's fault.

Somewhere are all the TOP stats for our losses. I posted them to prove this theory incorrect. In all of our losses, save one, TOP was pretty evenly split right up until our defense allowed a final scoring drive. The one game it heavily favored our opponent was the Steelers' game where the defense forced one punt on the Steelers opening drive, had an INT the next drive and then never stopped them again the entire game.

Yeah but Flacco's making $120 million, so...

I've never argued the gassed defense point with you, but to me, TOP is worthless if you're not putting up points.

Yup. Get that line going strong and if that's possible, why isn't everything else on offense just as good as our superbowl run?

Okay. Not sure how else to explain average to above average defense in 3 quarters and then collapses almost each and every game. TOP can be misleading as well, but that's another topic by itself.

Exactly!

Because the Oz that does not make draft pick mistakes for some reason overpaid Flacco.

it is illogical.

$3 -  $4M difference annually isn't "close".

And of course the organization has a choice on dropping $120M on someone. We have let players walk for much less than that.

We could get our money's worth, if we just get some nice talent around Joe...oh nevermind, I forgot we're the Ravens for a second.

The Ravens weren't very high on this cornerback class. Ozzie said the only time they thought about taking a cornerback was in the first round. I thought the cornerback class was pretty deep with talent but hey if Ozzie and crew don't like it then I'm fine with that. There were alot of cornerbacks that I thought would easily be  drafted in the second or third round but went alot later than expected.

To be fair - the actual 4th quarter meltdowns were not every game either. It just seemed that way at the time. Believe me I thought it was every game. Then when I went to do the TOP stats - and looked at scoring and such - it was more like 6 games total. Two of those we wound up winning.

Dude, we drafted Crockett (freaking) Gilmore and a WR in the 7th. Get off Ozzie's back!

Thats my mistake then. I thought the numbers were MUCH closer. And qb is different from other positions.

We let Ray Lewis test FA for less. Lucky for us he came home.

To be fair, my phone ring on day one. But I am committed to my flag football team as WR1 and couldn't get out of the contract.

Plus we're doing all we can every since they made that rule in 2013 that you're not allowed to draft offense in the first 3 rounds.

Sheesh - you couldn't do a restructure and then break your fax machine?

I lost some respect when Ray said he could see himself as a Cowboy or something like that. Ray was also on 2nd contract though and Reed was obviously at the twilight of his career. There was no fall back or escape plan if Flacco didn't resign, unless we thought TT could be our RG3. There is also the fact we were picking at 32 with no good qbs coming out. Even if there was, the amount to move up would've crippled us.

Depending on the source, it was reported that we offered him either $16 or $17 per year prior to that season. I don't blame Flacco for not taking it, when you look at other QBs making comparable money. It was insulting, actually (from his viewpoint)
