The Vent Thread 2014 Draft

889 posts in this topic

I see a major difference. Williams is 30 lbs heavier, stronger, Jernigan is much more athletic. They have two completely different play styles and fill two completely different roles. I think if we stick to a 3-4, Williams takes over Ngata's position and Jernigan can definitely play end. In a 4-3, Jernigan plays 3-tech and Williams 1-tech. Don't forget, Ngata, Canty, and  Daryl Smith are up there in age and ngata/Canty couldn't even make it through the whole season.

That's not what was said at the presser.  He's short with short arms, that's definitely not what you're looking for in a 5-tech.

FS

Slot CB

Starting WR

RT

So out of all of these which did we fill?

FS.

DAMNIT.

Granted, we potentially got a good one, but Flacco has nothing at WR if one of the Smiths go down. WE ARE SCREWED if that happens.

We got good talent. But we didn't fulfill many needs.

Camp won't start this year in all liklihood. And he's STRICTLY slot.

No CB drafted

Hurst might be the RT but is an unknown.

Starting WRs: Torry, Steve, Marlon. No rookie except Evans/Watkins is beating Steve out. i'd take Beckhma at 17, but no one else in the first. We can;t pass on someone of Mosely's talent. Second Round: Marlon is better right now than those guys. No doubt that Camp won't start. Give Marlon time to develop. he is a future stud #2 WR IMO.

Slot CB: like WR, only a high first rounder is likely better than chykie. Fuller and crew go before us. I would consider Verrett, but Moseley is better talent. Not worth taking anyone 2nd or later for 3rd CB if they aren't BPA.

FS: addressed

RT: Competition better Wagner/Hurst. They fail, KO to RT, Gino/Urschel to guard. We upgraded our line a ton in FA.

I think Hurst will be a starter if he can get in shape.. There's a good reason, seeing as many had him as a day two pick before the injury.

Mosley might be a pro bowler, as might Timmy(I loved Timmy though), but that's about it. Ursachel(or however you spell his name), will start games, but never be first on the depth chart bc of KO. Brooks will play immediately, and might be good, but never a pro bowler. Gilmore is a future TE #2 who will get playing time his rookie year seeing as Owen never makes it through a full season. Camp might be a starting slot WR when Steve leaves.

Again, Kubiak made Slaton look good. Who the RB is isn't my concern. But because of it Lorenzo might be a starter(I would've rather have Seastrunk... We screwed up there).

Urban will be a rotational linemen with the chance to start soon.

All in all, we filled no needs, but the draft itself wasn't terrible. Mosley being a potential future star is about the only thing right. Jernigan is talented enough to be a future pro bowler(again, I liked him a lot before we drafted him), but in all liklihood he won't be. Brooks should be an immediate starter(since we have no depth there). Other than that, the players should be contributors, but not what we needed.

Brooks will be a starter because we have no one else. Kind of like we threw Elam in as starter out of position since we had no one else.

The theory is - I believe - that getting Elam into his natural position where he excels will offset not having that play maker FS we were supposed to be going after. I think he's supposed to kind of be our Troy P.

I did some research on Gilmore (because I knew it was the blocking factor that probably made us pick him) and the concensus seems all over the board. Some have him #2 but most put him at a servicable #3 TE after development. So this one doesn't really bother me for right now. If necessary we do have Juice who could be used as a TE. That gives us some depth there.

Someone else is playing Sarcastaball?  I thought I was the only one.

I don't see how washed up Steve Smith, one trick pony Jacoby Jones, one trick pony Torrey Smith, and Marlon "Can't Beat Man Coverage" Brown doesn't count as hanging him out to dry at receiver.  Definitely not better than Mason, Boldin, and Housh, at least those guys could catch outside of the playoffs.  In a better scheme, that would have been a good offense, but Cam insisted on sending slow guys on 9 routes.  But I digress.  If this was New England where they invested heavily in the OL, sure I'd absolutely be on board with you.  If Flacco had time to throw it wouldn't be as big of an issue.  But they didn't.  We got an average to below average center, an unproven player at LG who the fans are pretending is Evan Mathis, and athletically limited fifth round draft pick at RT.  Heck, even Yanda was bad last season.  Forgive me for not wearing the purple glasses here, but I don't see any reason to be optimistic about next year.

It's not even about that though, it's about building for future years, and I think the FO did a piss poor job of setting the offense up to develop in the years to come.

I'll give your Mase (old and underpeforming in his last years with no help) and Boldin (overrrated besides his late year here), but lol at Housh. He was freaking terrible at that point. Steve isn't washed up at all. Sure he only had 750 yds and like 5tds last year, but that Carolina WR corp had no help for him and he battled injuries. He underperformed as a #1, but he can still play #2 to a high level. Don't foregt, O-line is a unit. If one guy plays bad, they all play bad. I'm sorry we can't get future HOFs at every single offensive position to make you happy.

Exactly. Because S. Smith & Daniels are stop gaps. Just like we give our offense every single year. There is no one to develop with Flacco and he's into year 7 now - it's getting late.

I just don't see a reason to reach on a guy like Cooks/lee in the first or Robinson/Latimer in the second when we don't need an WR.

I think it's time to accept that, no matter what we believe he can be, the FO is never going to give him a real opportunity to be that guy.  They're too focused in the past.

Overall, I think Ozzie lacks vision.  He gets guys and hopes something comes from that.  Other teams are looking at how guys fit what they do and how they want to build for the future.  The real genius at GM is John Schneider.  Maybe one day Ravens fans will realize that Ozzie is just a guy.

Just happy you aren't a Browns fan. Ravens have been one of the best teams in the NFL for years, I'd hate to see you as a fan of a true losing franchise with the way you make the Ravens sound. Remember, Ozzie is getting the big bucks and we aren't for a reason. It too easy to criticize the person in power. I like to see the results if any of us took over for GM...

Just because we don't draft a high receiver every year doesn't mean that we are hanging Flacco to try. this receving corp is probably his best ever.

When is the last time we drafted a high receiver?

You have to look to the future too - this was the deepest draft for offensive talent in forever - and we are usually picking late. It was the time to load up on offensive talent.

Unless we sink, we will not have high enough draft picks to do it next year. And we are always saying "next year" for the offense. It was what we said last year after the draft.

It was an opportunity to set us up on offense wasted. One we do not get often.

We say that now. But do we say this drat turned out the way we thought it would three years from now? And we also need to stop equating high draft picks to great players. that simply doesn't happen all the time. Just because we aren't picking high doesn't mean we can't get good players.

It's the vent thread. Don't like it, don't read it. Join any myriad of the other threads calling even our UDFAs future Pro Bowlers and drink all the kool aid.

Our offense was our most needy. Not that our defense didn't have needs  - most notable a CB and an impact FS. We got a FS - not an impact one - but no CB.

Oddly - the pick that most ranted about when it happened I understood. I thought we reached for Gilmore but he was a blocking TE - so I understood it even though I felt he'd have been there later on.

maybe i am venting about you venting. 5 of our 8 draft picks were on the offensive side of the ball. Gillmore has hands as well. we had 5 CB on the roster and added 4 more and i bet you dollars to doughnuts we add at least 3 more before mini camp starts

We got two half of famers with our first two picks, I don't know what you have to be upset about. Clearly other teams have no idea what they're doing, we got the top two talents in the draft. In Ozzie we trust!

what's crazy is that I actually wouldn't be surprised if Mosely turns out to be a HOF candidate when it's all said and done.

Crockett Gilmore, not so much

We have not had a true #1 receiver in the entire time Flacco has been here. Not once. Because we don't draft high enough to snag anyone with even the potential to be that guy. We had a chance and we've blown it.

Sure, they might not have been that guy - Clayton is a good example - but what is even more rare is finding that guy down the bottom.

Some of you people act like being a GM is rocket science or something.

Maybe not rocket science, but it's a very tough job. There are only 32 NFL GMs in the world and many can get canned early. I truely doubt any of us here could be an NFL GM. We are more likely the Mel Kipers of the world, without the tv show.

I have no problem admitting when I was wrong.  I just hope you people don't mind hearing I told you so when injuries severely limit his playing time and his lack of explosion prevent him from being a Kuechly type of impact ILB.

How many true #1's are there in the league? And then, how many play on bad teams?

You watch tape and grade people for traits that you know that you're looking for.  The hours are worse for sure, but someone can learn how to appropriately scout players very quickly and the rest of the skills a GM needs are the same as those utilized by any manager of a Walmart.

Gilmore has hands but his knock is his route running and lack of separation - which is what our current crop has issues with!

Which is why I liked the S. Smith signing. Sure it's a stop gap but just maybe some of his route running and separation skills would rub off.

Please tell me the WR you wanted to draft at 17 once Beckham was drafted.

Until you realized it was going to prevent them from addressing the WR position in a real and long term way?

Really? I managed a Rite Aid when I was in High School. So, you're telling me I should just apply for Ozzie's job next? Who knew?

Not really. Its more than just tape. You have to factor on/off the field behavior, were he would fit in your schemes, injury history, leadership qualities etc. You have to evaluate hundreds upon hundreds of college superstars. You know that some of these picks could make or break your job. Remember, if you get a first round bust, its not "oh, my bad", its you're canned. How mayn times have you been extremely right/wrong about players? There could go your job.

Mark Clayton... didn't work out

Do you realize that was in 2005? Nine years ago?

And we don't shortchange the offense.

Not saying they all work out and usually - we aren't even in the same zip code to snag a guy who has even shown that potential. This draft though - well we were and we didn't.
