The Vent Thread 2014 Draft

889 posts in this topic

I'm basically disappointed with two parts of the draft, but otherwise I'm loving it.

*Not upgrading our WRs for the long haul. I feel like what we have will be enough for a top 20 kind of offence, but we needed something more than Steve Smith going forwards. It's probably for the best OBJ was taken at 12 because it sounds like they would have gone Mosley over him anyway and I'd still be sobbing in a corner somewhere. But there was no-one else worth taking at 17, so I get passing here.

The more interesting discussion is pick 48. I loved Davante Adams and Allen Robinson, and I think both would have made us a lot better this year and beyond. I don't buy the argument Robinson would have been a reach because he went 13 picks later. If he's a second-round talent, you take him in the second and no-one cares where he was taken once preseason camps start. No-one says, "Oh Torrey Smith is great, but we should have traded back 10 picks because that's closer to what he was worth." But I also understand the Jernigan pick: the value was too much to pass on and I think interior DL is a bigger long-term need than people realise. Basically, give me any one of those three guys (plus maybe a couple of other defenders), and I'm happy.

Beyond the second round, the guys available would just be adding to the pile of solid if unspectacular talents or be long-term projects. I don't care about the depth of the class, you do what makes the team better and those mid-round receivers didn't do it for me.

PolishRifle said Ozzie went out of his way to improve the defence this time, and I disagree. He simply took the best players, and because of the big runs on offensive talent before our picks those guys happened to be defenders. And bloody good defenders too.

A WR1 is absolutely a need, but it's not an urgent need imo. Although it will get more urgent every year.

*The other thing was our CB depth. We need more than four guys on the roster (five now, but where's the competition?). I was hoping we'd grab at least one late-round guy, and the pick that stung the most was taking Keith Wenning - who I'm sure will be a quality backup for us (looks like his game would suit us well), but is less likely to see extended minutes than any depth CB.

A good point is they basically valued Mellette as a third round pick in this draft.  So after the first 2 rounds they didn't think of any of those players wouldn't be the same value as just developing Mellette or Marlon Brown.  Not saying it's flawless logic, but it shows how he sees the receiving core.

Yeah, that's why I wasn't huge about going WR after the second round. No-one at that point would really make us that much better. Whether or not they project to be better than Mellette is a pretty low bar too imo, considering he's almost certainly going to be bottom of the pole when our 53 are named.

I think really how we'll feel is how Jernigan pans out.  The second round is where the real difference makers were (at least perceived).

Jernigan was talked about as a 1st rounder, so unless he completely flops, I'm cool with it.

Agreed. If he doesn't pan out then watching Adams thrive in GB will be painful (or watching Robinson do Ozzie knows what in Jville).

Something I'd like to point out: I like the way our draft was and I'm happy with our picks but I feel like if Mosley wasn't on the board for our first pick the entire draft would be different

It probably would've been better.  Darqueeze Dennard seemed to be the next man up, since that's the only round they were talking about taking a corner.

So, what pick did everybody hate? What a people whining about? I just don't know why there are 21 pages of venting when we killed this draft.

I LOVED this draft but then again I am a defensive minded fan. I would of liked a Tackle but I will take a future Center/Guard John Urschel.

I will say I am not crazy about Crockett Gilmore and I wish we had gotten Terrance West there (dang Browns moving up!) but I also think we should of taking Brandon Thomas there. But like they say, Ozzie knows best, hope to see Gilmore prove me wrong.

Agreed. In fact I think we would have had to nab him at 99 rather than Crockett. I guess they didn't like Desir's average speed, or believed more in Crockett? Dunno, but I would have rolled the dice that Crockett would have been there still at 134 as obviously Desir wouldn't.

I went to Towson and we don't get too many NFL stars so yeah, I'm going to support my school and yeah I am a Ravens fan. Will I wear it to games? Absolutely not, but I ll wear it when the Browns play Pittsburgh or Cinci.

Yup, that's why we take him off the board at 99 and pick up Gillmore with 134.

To be honest I can't find a pick that I hated. There were a couple times where I was hoping for one guy and another guy was drafted instead. I'd get a bit angry at first, but then I'd calm down and realize we got a great pick. Overall, this was a great draft. I have no complaints.

See I love the Crockett pick after learning about him. A great blocker and a possible redzone threat. He perfectly fits Kubiacks system and sounds like a Kubiack pick. He could help the offense a lot this year and beyond.

Some other team could of liked Crockett and picked him before us. I'd rather have the skill set of Crockett over Desir who I'm thinking the Ravens don't like as much as the fans.

I actually liked most of the picks we ended up with. Dallas took our tackle in front of us in the first round, and Cleveland moved up to take the RB we probably wanted a couple of rounds later, which is frustrating. But we didn't have the ammo to move up so we really ended up lucky with some of the guys who fell to us. I think too many people bought into the hype of the two first round safeties that the pundits seemed to want us to take but we may have ended up with one a few rounds later that complements Elam much better. (Pryor was too much of a Strong safety Elam clone, and HaHa was never all that in Ozzies eyes.) I think when everybody else is focusing on WR and QB and OT, thats actually the ideal time to swoop in and draft defense, and fortunately Ozzie saw it that way too. We got a lot stronger on young defensive players while at the same time lining up someone to address all our needs. We got a FS, an offensive lineman, a MLB, a RB, a TE, a WR, a backup QB prospect. Ozzie clearly used a BPA methodology and stayed true to his board, which means we took the player the Ravens had previously determined was the highest value at that time. Not even sure what didn't get addressed that we needed. We will pull in a veteran RT and 3rd corner when teams make their cuts if the guys we have arent ready.

Some of you naysayers are going to get exposed on how ignorant you really are. This draft was not flashy but going to be solid as a rock in a few years time. Looking at what was presented and what was taken the only one I would change is the QB, but Harbaugh wanted one so it is what it is.

Several CBs were taking over him. i probably would have taken Jaylen Watkins with that pick and tried to get Gilmore/Lynch at 134

I liked the thinking in this draft. Everyone went offense in an O heavy draft. We took the defensive gems that were ignored.

To be fair. Not all choices we made will fare out. We pick the best player for us. It's up to them to make the best out of their opportunity.

Remember, there was a class of first rounders less than a decade ago that didn't pan out at all and #1 overalls tank in the league too. Ozzie has been doing this much longer than anyone and we've seen plenty of success because of him.

We could always have the Cowboys GM. Be thankful we are contenders year in, year out and trust that he did his job well

Ozzie said they had conversation about CBs only in the first round. Everywhere else corners have been way too far from our pick. So, I'd argue that the Ravens wouldn't have selected Desir with 134 if he was there.

We wanted TE and there wasn't a great depth of the quality ones in this year's draft, in fact he was the last good one left.

Brace yourself Joe, the next one is coming from your right. Nice catch by Marlon, though. :)

Nice block Ray.

We all know Ray can't block. Which of our draft picks is going to help with that?
