The Vent Thread 2014 Draft

889 posts in this topic

As I'm thinking about whether or not I like the Mosley selection, does anyone have any input as to where he may fit in? I know that he can play both MLB and OLB. At ILB, D. Smith is a near-certain starter this season, but I could see Mosley lining up alongside of him. Suggs and Dumervil are obviously the starters at OLB, with A. Brown waiting behind them. I think that was a solid choice.

I would've liked a WR though. It was our main weak point last season, and this draft had plenty of good ones.

Edit: And less than a minute after hitting "Post," we get Campanaro.

As of right now, I see defense being:

Jernigan-Ngata-Williams**

Suggs-D.Smith-Mosley-Dumervil

Webb-Stewart(maybe Brooks)-Elam-J. Smith

**Canty wasn't great last year so I definitely see competition being open here with Williams, Canty and Urban. Either way, we got some great depth.

Arthur Brown will come in as a Nickel backer.

Confindence in Jah Reid. Hilarious.

Jernigan might be playing NT and Ngata at End with Canty or Urban.

Ngata is going to the DE, so he doesn't get wore down as much from the double teams.

Either way he is probably starting...

Eric Winston, Ozzie is on the phone.

Lewis moore is probably a lot better than williams. Before his injury he was a solid 3rd rounder and has good technique.

Yup, more patch up work for the offense. Wouldn't want to waste a pick on that part of team.

Look folks, people are entitled to their own opinions about personnel, especially in a thread labelled "Vent Thread."

It is a copout to respond to criticism and second-guessing of draft strategy with mundane arguments such as 1) ...you are not a professional what do you know 2) ... OZ has done a great job for years, pipe down 3) ...you weren't in the war room and have no idea, etc.

Now I am not saying that EVERY contra-opinion is valid, has merit, and/or has to be accepted, but let's do our best to persuade one another with some sort of information rather than blanket statements about lack of scouting qualifications or question one another's fandom.

By analogy, I don't have to be a professional chef or cook with the kitchen staff to perceive that I don't like what I read on the menu. And yes, sometimes, even my favorite, go to restaurant can mess up a meal from time to time.

Course, in fairness, I have tried things I thought I wouldn't like and been pleasantly surprised, and I hope that's the case with Mr. 3rd round "Davey" Crockett himself.  :bunny:

Bring on some preseason, puhlease!

Ha ha. You see the thing you and all these other armchair GMs need to realize is YOU ARE NOT SCOUTS. Reading Mock drafts and Mel Kiper's big board and watching the odd Youtube video is not scouting. And then you guys get upset because we pick a name that you are not familiar with, that didn't catch your eye while reading a mock draft.

I know where your coming from. I posted that when I was still steamed about not taking Desir or Andre Williams. I actually like the Taliaferro  pick a lot more after I did some more research on him. Big kid  could be a good short yardage back for us, i would've preferred Andre Williams but Ill take it. Now that the emotions of the draft are over i'm just going to reserve judgement until we see how they actually pan out.

Silver lining on not taking a CB: We can either Roberson or Raashad Reynolds in UDFA as of now

If we can get one of the top CBs on the board in UDFA, I will be happy. I just really want more than 4 on our roster, especially when our top 2 have some injury history between them

After thinking on it for awhile I'm no longer disappointed like I initially was. Not the sexiest draft, and hardly helped Joe, but I think it was solid.

Voice of reason there. Not everyone will agree. If they did, this would be a boring place

ward off the boards at 30, and I was PRAYING for ozzie to trade up to NE or SF and take ward, and boom, SF takes him. so, what in the hell are we gonna do about safety now???

I understandmosley may have been your BPA, but FS is such a ridiculously big need for us, that I just don't see how we passed up both of the safeties. where else are we gonna address this? pick up a scrub or washed up vet who gets cut after training camp so he can come in and be a liability? I know Terrence brooks wont be ozzies BPA in the 2nd, and he wont be there in the 3rd, so we either trust darian stewart(which I don't) or we go with elam at FS again and waste his talent.

HAHAHA.  I love people like you.  Talk about the draft like you know everything when you really know nothing.  Whelp.  We got Brooks in the 3rd soooo.

Slightly underwhelmed by our draft haul this year.  Not a fan of the Mosley pick whatsoever, Gillmore was a slight headscratcher at that spot, Taliaferro is kinda meh.  Not taking a cb is questionable.  The rest are pretty solid picks.  I like Wenning and Campanaro.  Signing James Hurst was great as well

Now that I've been thinking about it, I'm pretty happy with this draft. Every guy we drafted has a role, whether they will be a starter during the 2014 season or a back up for a guy that could soon retire.

First two picks were strictly BPA and man they were great selections in my opinion. Mosley and Jernigan are great defenders. Brooks will be great as well. I like the pick of Gilmore in the third even though it was a bit of a reach. But he's the guy we wanted and we wanted him for a reason. He is a bit of a developmental guy but I think he'll be a decent player in a year or two. Urban was a great player to grab in the fourth round. He was scouted to go in the second. Love the pick with Lorenzo Taliaferro. After that, we got another decent pick with John Urschel. Hes a little undersized but he's an intelligent athlete and could be a good guard one day. Webbing was brought in because next year is Taylor's last season on his rookie contract. He's a developmental guy but I don't think he'll be starting anytime soon. Lastly, we have Campanero which I see as a steal. Don't think he'll start this year but could eventual become a good slot receiver. Plus there's always UDFAs to look out for, and we already got some promising players like the OT James Hurst and the CB Sammy Seamster.

Perhaps I'm a bit too optimistic but I don't see much to complain about. No we didn't get a flashy receiver in the first round or a big name tackle to immediately plug in on the right side. Every pick, however was a good addition that brings a solid player here. We will have a good team next year! Most of all, a great defense in my opinion.

My only real gripe at this point is no CB yet although Seamster is an intriguing guy as an UDFA

I agree, I would've liked to draft a CB, but I like the picks we ended up with. Still time to get more UDFAs and I looked up Seamster after we signed him and he could be a steal

Confidence in Wagner is just as hillarious after how he performed when he came in for Oher.

I'm done venting about it - but the first one that drags on the offense if they're inept again - I am reminding how they just loved this defense heavy (yet again) draft and completely ignoring our offensive needs.

Don't want to hear it.

Offseason upgrades pre-draft was chock full of offense.

I do like Hurst which is why I am not really worrying about OT, that and we also have signed guys off the street in August and had them start for us. I think we are in good shape at the position if we get a vet
