The Vent Thread 2014 Draft

TBH , this whole draft sucks,,,

I make an exception for Brooks since we needed a FS and he's a decent enough prospect, but otherwise I share your sentiment.  There are even some other guys we drafted that I like that I don't think were smart decisions due to the overall direction they took.

I disagree that the whole draft sucks.  We had some decent picks.  I like 3 picks Mosley, Jernigan, and Brooks.  Mosley was a guy who may have gone much higher and is insurance in case Brown turns out to be a dud.  The worst case would be a platoon of Brown and Mosley next to Smith.  This also provides us with much needed depth in case someone goes down.  We passed up with most of the guys I wanted after than and took Jernigan.  I can live with him regardless of the criticism of his size, etc.  He has a knack of finding the guy with the ball and hits hard.  The run will be stopped this year.  Brooks gives us a guy who knows how to play FS.  He's not the top flight recruit, but familiarity at the position, coming from a championship program, etc., should account for something.  What baffled me was when we took a blocking TE who can barely catch and runs like a lineman.  I don't really understand taking the small school RB when we could have had the big bad Boston College bruiser in the 3-headed monster.  On that note, why did we take an extra NT when we have what 3 already?   The rest of the picks need to prove themselves to us.  Finally, if we were going to take a QB, why not take McCarron?  I never fully understand what goes on behind the scenes, but then again I don't pay the bills for cut fodder either.

Steelers get Dri Archer and Martavis Bryant. Browns get West and Desir. We get a TE in the 3rd who would still be on the board now and a bum rb. Total incompetence to pick Gillmore that high, not a single TE taken in the entire 4th round. We could've had Andre Williams, a legit power back that would've been great depth and our short yardage back. Or Desir who would've competed for our #3 cb spot and been a good ST'er.

I'm blowing a gasket looking back at how we squandered that pick and absolutely fell on our face since the Terrence Brooks pick. I'm actually embarrassed, the Browns have drafted better then us in the mid rounds. All those quality rb's and we miss out on every single one. Shameful day 3, absolute failure every step of the way starting with our 3rd round comp pick. There's no way you can argue that Andre Williams wasn't a better pick at that point? When a fan can do the scouts job better then the scouts something is very wrong.

How did fans do a better job?  The season hasn't even started, so how do you know which players will bring more production to their teams?

Reserving judgment until preseason. That's the reasonable thing to do, right?

I'm going to be excited about these guys until I have a reason not to be.

Because I as a fan can tell you Desir or Andre Williams was a better comp pick in the 3rd round. By a mile, it's not even close. Guys like Gillmore typically go late and are a dime a dozen. Both Desir and Williams were high upside guys at a position of need. Desir could've been a very good #3 cb and maybe even better as he developed. Just gross incompetence from our FO on that pick, come back to it in just a yera and you'll see what I mean. i don't hate Gillmore, I hate where we took him considering some rare talent was still on the board.

yeah, after the first 3 rounds no one in the media or fan base knows the players as well as the scouts.

I am extremely confident that we have more than enough deserving replacements for Ozzie on this board.

As stated earlier, I'm reserving judgement until the season starts.

Last year...one pick i didnt understand was brandon williams...there was more hype about his ability to do a handstand then his actuAl football ability...

This draft tells me the FO knew they made a mistake on that one

On a more positive note, our special teams are going to kick butt

You must not know a lot about brandon williams then... he was dominant in DIII.  Very productive player.

His technique is abysmal and he"s on the turf flat on his stomach more often then not.

Yeah no CB or WR in a draft that is extremely deep at both positions is a bit questionable. Especially CB considering we only have 4 on the roster.

Overall I am happy with the draft. Sucks Cleveland grabbed Terrance West before he could fall to us but I am a man of my word. Going to buy a West Browns jersey. Told myself as long as it isn't Pittsburgh, New England or Philly, I will buy one.

Let me research this Gilmore kid, never heard of him.

You're a Ravens fan? I would hope not. The only Browns jersey I would ever get would probably be Ozzie

Seriously don't buy a West jersey now if you're a Ravens fan

As long as we end up with an All-Pro and couple starters with this draft, then I'm satisfied.

Never question the Oz and he did good on not picking for need, but BPA.

Yeah, we'll have to add depth there.  WR I can understand, since we have 6 we expect to make the roster, but injuries to skill positions could really hurt us.

As I'm thinking about whether or not I like the Mosley selection, does anyone have any input as to where he may fit in? I know that he can play both MLB and OLB. At ILB, D. Smith is a near-certain starter this season, but I could see Mosley lining up alongside of him. Suggs and Dumervil are obviously the starters at OLB, with A. Brown waiting behind them. I think that was a solid choice.

I would've liked a WR though. It was our main weak point last season, and this draft had plenty of good ones.

Edit: And less than a minute after hitting "Post," we get Campanaro.

He's a Mike.  Neither Smith nor Brown are particularly adept at taking on blockers, which is a  strength of mosley.  I bet Daryl will still wear the green dot, and they may flip the formation, but he'll be the "thumper"

One disappointing take away from this draft is WR was loaded with talent, and we did not get a WR to bolster depth and give Flacco more options, we didn't address Oline depth early enough in the Draft IMO either..

After TE Ebron was picked in the 1st I only hoped we would add a WR in the 2nd or 3rd round, or an Olineman..

I was also hoping to see a CB added for competition purposes with Chykie and Asa...

I would still like to know something about that TE in the 3rd round?

Ha ha. You see the thing you and all these other armchair GMs need to realize is YOU ARE NOT SCOUTS. Reading Mock drafts and Mel Kiper's big board and watching the odd Youtube video is not scouting. And then you guys get upset because we pick a name that you are not familiar with, that didn't catch your eye while reading a mock draft.

I went to Towson and we don't get too many NFL stars so yeah, I'm going to support my school and yeah I am a Ravens fan. Will I wear it to games? Absolutely not, but I ll wear it when the Browns play Pittsburgh or Cinci.

RavensInsider Aaron Wilson
Ozzie Newsome expressed confidence in Rick Wagner, Kelechi Osemele, Jah Reid, said they could also look for a veteran tackle in free agency

Confindence in Jah Reid. Hilarious.
