Ravens Draft 2014

Well, fortunately we run a ZBS system so I'm not sure how important it is that John is super strong. Furthermore, he can improve in that area and that's exactly why we have a weight room at the UA facility. I don't think you need to be so caustic, however, in response. I understand that perhaps he was a bit sarcastic, but sarcasm doesn't necessarily need more sarcasm in return. Just my opinion.

Also, Brandon Williams has freakish body strength and that was before an entire season of NFL football. Combine that with the entire season and now off-season of football, and that may be an unfair competition for Urschel, who wasn't the strongest to begin with but going against Williams might be a bit too much at this point.

Point noted Grim! Precisely why I ignored his labored response this go around.

Um... No.. .Just no... No one. Strongest member on the team. Even stronger than Ngata

I'm gonna bring up the point that while Urschel may not have exceptional upper body strength, he has a strong lower body which is what really matters at guard.

He's not the strongest guy out there, but in no way is he weak, and it's not really a weakness.

Strength doesn't really matter in the zone scheme as much as intelligence. Kubiak generally likes quick smart O-linemen in his scheme and that is what Urschel is.

I'd say it's the other way around; he did 30 reps, but can't seem to drive or steer a guy with any consistency

My explanation for that is actually his short and relatively weak arms. Because his arms are short, longer and stronger armed defensive linemen can create space between himself and Urschel. This prevents Urschel from firmly locking onto the target, and it eliminates his leverage advantage. As a result, he can't get as strong a push.

I've noticed that when Urschel gets a good punch and gets extension, he drives the guy with ease. But when the DT gets extension and Urschel doesn't get a good punch, he doesn't drive the guy as well.

That's a good eye....I didn't watch Urschel enough to figure out why he had those problems. You may very well be right

Former OL. I learned to respect his opinion on such matters a while ago.

Appreciate that ;) I don't know it all, but I know OL and DL pretty well.

But yeah, undersized but strong HS guard. I had the exact problems Urschel has.

Now that is a picture that is downright scary!

He knows his stuff in general. Much respect for The Raven, especially since the invasion of all the crazies lately  :D

Don't know why you got so many negatives for such an insightful comment.  I'd rather see more post such as yours that explain the technical aspects of football more than reading the countless whining and needless doubt posts I read from others.
