Ravens Draft 2014

I liked the comments DeCosta made during the post draft press conference regarding slot receivers. He basically said "yeah I think its about time we get in on the action".

Flacco got a huge contract after he led us to the SB throwing the ball to Boldin and then we promptly traded away Anquan for peanuts. Two drafts went by, one with the deepest WR class in years another with Keenan Allen falling past us in the draft twice, and we have yet to adress the Boldin trade in the draft. Just like last year we're hoping, that the guys we have will fill in that role. I don't see it.

You don't need a franchise QB to play good defense and run the ball well, yet that's all the Ravens seem to be interested in doing. That big contract makes less and less sense to me.

All I have to say is Golden Tate, Jon Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, Ricardo Lockette, Zack Miller, Luke Wilson.  (Sidney Rice out for the year, Harvin only played in SB)

Defense wins championships, the teams that just outscore their opponent and still give up a lot of points on D don't win SB's (Broncos for the last two years, Patriots since they had their "dynasty defense" in the early 00's). What the Seahwks did do is run the ball effectively and that's something we're getting back to with Kubiak.. but most importantly they had a dominate defense and we appear to building one of our own after seeing this draft class. I would actually take our current weapons over the guys that got Russell Wilson to the SB and that we won a SB with in 2012. The last 3 SB winners haven't had potent offenses.

Torrey > Golden Tate

Steve Smith > Doug Baldwin

Jacoby = Jermaine Kearse

Marlon > Ricardo Lockette

Pitta > Miller

Daniels > Luke Wilson

2014 Torrey > 2012 Torrey

2014 Steve Smith < 2012 Boldin

2014 Jacoby > 2012 Jacoby

2014 Marlon > 2012 Tandon Doss

2014 Pitta ? 2012 Pitta

2014 Daniels > 2012 Ed dickson

Russel Wilson doesn't cost the Seahawks nearly as much as Flacco does the Ravens. Without a replacement for Boldin (which I don't believe we have on the roster right now) that contract is a huge waste of money. All that garanteed money just to have him hand the ball over to a RB. Great.

You just don't get it.  Defense is the only way to win championships, high powered passing attacks never work out.  It's like you missed the dominant defensive performances when the Packers and Saints won or something.  And everyone knows Brees and Rodgers suck throwing the ball, all they do is hand it off.

Flacco had a better postseason in 2012 then Wilson did last year. Only reason Flacco didn't have a good year last year was because of the injury to Pitta, K.O. getting injured, Gino being our starting Center, Shipley being our starting LG, Monroe learning a new offense mid-season with new teammates, Rice injury, couldn't run the ball from the depleted OL, defense dealing with departures of Ray, Ed,Ellerbe, Kruger, Cary and having to forge a new identity, playing 2 SS on the back end, defense couldn't get timely stops, Dickson and Dallas Clark were our #1 and #2 TE's all year, the cam cameron system was failing miserably because of the lack of personnel to run it properly... do I need to keep going?

This team had that litany of problems that made life extremely hard on Flacco, I can't imagine any QB having a good year under those circumstances. We got the Boldin replacement this year in Steve Smith + a legit #2 TE and have actually built up the defense through the draft and added some good depth in addition to getting an actual Center and countless key players back from injury.

Everything that could go wrong last year did.. and we still went 8-8. I find that actually kind of impressive when you look at how this team fell apart on so many levels coming off that rough offseason and injury bug going all year.

We were able to re-sign one of the best left tackles in the NFl, traded for  a better center from the buccs, get  a older but still productive player in Stevie Smith, re-sign  Joe Flacco security blanket Dennis Pitta, sign  a solid tight end in Owen Daniels whom probably could be a number one tight end for some other teams,  bring back Jacoby Jones, still have Torrey Smith, have a promising young receiver in  Marlon Brown, and most of all finally get a above average offensive coordinator.

I can't really say Ozzie has not worked hard this off season to cater to Joe. Of course I would have liked for us to get one of those play making receivers and I thought for sure Jarvis Landry would have been there for us in the third round but surprisingly  he was gone before the third round even started. I would have liked for us to have drafted Allen Robinson or Cody Latimer over Timmy Jernigan in the second round but Jernigan was guy whom was rated very highly and I can see why

 he was  picked.

so how good is Ricky Wagner, because he;s gonna be the starting right tackle

That's not determined yet. I think Wagner is good but he's unproven. The battle for RT will be a great one to watch. If needed, Urschel could play LG and we can move Osemele to RT. We also signed UDFA James Hurst that could take the job. One of the best signings IMO.

Best draft they have had in terms of pure talent in many years. Like the Campanaro pick in the end...plenty of depth and upside in this group. Might see 4 future starters from this group. Grades mean nothing but my favorite draft in years.

I want KO at LG.  Jah Reid won't get it and no way I'm expecting the late round pick to start.

any word on David Mimms?

Or KO will

why do people keep talking about KO switching?  than we won't have a LG.

Don't give me Shipley or Gino at LG either they both got blown up consistently last season.  I don't need to see Gino or Shipley starting again

If RT was that big of a need it's a possibility. Osemele was good at RT, and we drafted a potential started in Urschel, with some more development in my opinion. Plus it would be better for him if he was a having back problems, but like you said I'd rather have him inside.

In love with Terrence Brooks pick. Wouldn't be surprised if he was the starter coming into the season.

For you "need drafters"...what need do the Ravens really have? Maybe one lineman a Guard or R tackle? They will acquire RT or G of they need one by seasons start. To me they Loaded up on lots of REAL TALENT. I can see 4 future solid starters from this group and good depth. Best draft in many a year.

Gradkowski sucked at center, but that was because Shipley was starting next to him and he didn't know the calls. Gradkowski could be a decent guard. Urschel could be a good guard as well.

I see that we drafted the future leader of our defense, a great 1st round talent DT, a starting caliber FS, a future #2 TE who could put up some good numbers, a rotational guy at DE, a big and very good pass blocking RB that would be a good goaline/3 and short guy, at OG that is at worst extremely solid line depth, a solid backup QB, and a WR that can contribute to ST now and maybe be our future slot guy.

Ryan Shazier and Aaron Donald will be the two steals of the first round..... Shame we missed out on both.

Mosley is a better player, better football player than Shazier. Plus he's playing in a better defense. And Shazier going in the top 15 is hardly a "steal". If not for his speed he wouldn't even be considered in the 1st round. And speed doesn't make linebackers, the key is having great instincts. Mosley is a different animal when it comes to that.

I had Shazier going to GB before the draft (thought both HHCD and Pryor would go top 20). I considered him a tiny bit of a reach there. He doesn't fit the steelers scheme well either.

I have a feeling that Gilmore will be a fan , and Joe, favorite in a while. There is no way Joe doesn't learn to love those hands and blocking.

I think we got a load of talent, and I believe we landed a handful of future team leaders in the locker room. I think all the picks make the roster, three or four wind up starting some games, and all, aside from Wenning, compete for playing time throughout this year.

I agree with this. While I'll always be defensive minded person first. I was truly hoping to see the office get a jolt of new life. ( I knew Ebron was a dream, but I thought M.Lee, J.Matthews, A.Robinson were real possibilities. Was looking for Z.Martin to give Flacco some much needed protection as well. ).

Hoping Mellette and M.Brown can make me forget about all the WRs we passed on. ( the first 3 rounds had me screaming for a WR the way I was screaming for Q.Patton last year lol).

I hear you!  lol!

*This isn't necessarily true.. R.Wagner is currently a potential RT starter. Many things could occur before the start of the season. Couple years ago we signed B.McKinnie late to help the Oline , last year we got D.Smith to sure up the Defense late in the preseason process.

Point being veterans get cut during training camps, some surprising cuts may happen, or trades could occur as well. I mean we did trade 4th & 5th round picks for Monroe during the season.

Ex. The titans drafted Lewan, signed Oher M.Roos is in the final year of his contract, if they go through camp and feel that both oher and Lewan are capable starters, he could become a cap casualty or trade bait.

Same could happen in St Louis with maybe Roger Saffold or Jake Long unless they chose to play Robinson at Guard early on.

Plenty of time for the FO to make more moves to improve this team.

This was a great need pick @ #1. We lost our entire LB corps, and started out fresh last season. Why waste an offensive pick with our annual new OC 's stuck in a revolving door ?

Some one has to assumes Ray's role with the team, a signal caller on the D.

Rebuilding, all the way.

Do you guys see john urschel as a guard or could he be our future center? I kind of like the idea of a super genius calling the adjustment checks.

Either really. I feel he could be special for us. Matt Birk like type, so maybe future center.

I just assumed he would take the job from Zuttah within the next year or two
