Ravens Draft 2014

616 posts in this topic

I'm definitely not overwhelmed with this draft but Oz and co did pair up two  defensive anchors from the front end and back end of an undefeated Florida St. championship team with Brooks and Jernigan to continue to work together. And I'm sure Mosely will be cool with playing with Upshaw again. Both champions also. So I can see him looking to the future of the defense with some stout young players that know how to win. Just hope Pees knows what to do with it.

I think we are pressing to hard to get wrs and everybody wanted a home run guy. But unless we were getting watkins or evans I was fine with picking up a slot guy later. We are young with wrs and sometimes guys come out of nowhere... like brown did. We still dont know about Mallette and maybe... just maybe we can pick another undrafted later or a released guy once camps start. I would have liked to have traded for stevie johnson. If we get desperate Doss will probably get cut after looking at what the Jaguars did and we did sign Williams back who might make the team at least as a special teams guy.

My problem is that we expect for late round guys to be good contributors when in reality they could be nothing more than ST players and sometimes not even that

For those complaining about the offense. Did you notice they let go of 3 awful lineman and replaced them with C Zuttah and KO is back? Also second year players Jensen and Wagner might battle it out for a spot. Rice is in shape now, not 15lbs overweight and Pierce was hurt. Then they Signed Owen Daniels AND Steve Smith. Pitta is back also. Then Marlon Brown is in his 2nd year also. Plus they resigned Jacoby. Oh....they also have a new OC in Kubiak. What else you want? Plus, they still have 4 picks tomorrow. They drafted a TE and have developmental players in Juice, Mellete and Furstenberg.

The difference is that this year some of these guys that are around in the 4th would probably have gone higher in a weaker draft.  There are, by my count, at least 9 receivers left I think would be good fits here - Bryant, Norwood, Abbrederis, Street, Huff, Washington, Janis, Reese, and Hoffman.

Last year i didnt like our draft when it happened cause they focussed on need. SS Elam isnt à FS, Lb Brown wasnt big enough and DT Williams was too green. This year they added REAL TALENT. BPA is the way to go when you go for need you end up with Gradkowskis and Ohers and Codys.

Team believes in Wagner at RT. Don't know why fans are crying about offensive line.

Team believed in many players on offense last year and then we had alot to cry about.

Defense gets all the attention and Flacco has to make due with the rest and then he's to blame when our offense is underwhelming? I dunno. I don't have to like the draft I guess, it just has to work, but it seems to me, that we've done a much better job helping out the defense last year than we did this year helping out the offense.

They want Flacco to have 19 linemen and 8 WR's.

Could be. I didn't see anything about him being 6th or 7th round until that post.

Rice will get some sort of suspension. That leaves Pierce and what was that guy's name that we all went who? when they signed him? That RB? That is pretty much it at RB.

We signed a center who, it is being reported, is slightly better than Gino, who most raved about when he was drafted. But - didn't work out that way did it? Jensen & Wagner - though the FO might be high on them - have not proven anything. Wait - we did see Wagner didn't we? I believe most of us were of the opinion we hoped not to have to rely on him?

KO - still an unknown because he did not play well - we all just assumed his back was injured from day one but we don't know that especially since it should have been listed on the injury report and wasn't.

Kubiak - I'll give you - but you can only do so much if you're not given the players to do it with.

They drafted a project TE because he is considered a blocking TE. Not a receiving TE and his weakness is his route running and lack of separation (man doesn't that sound familiar?).

The point is: we give the defense all the high draft picks every year, they play a click above average and everyone is "oh our defense is soooooo improved!" (stats prove otherwise) but we give the offense hand me downs and scrub picks and expect them to play top 5 or at least top 10.

I don't want to hear anything about our offense this coming season. Nary a word. There isn't an impact WR left on the board and any OL pick will be hit or miss at this point too. Ozzie & company gave them none of the help they promised when they talked about "building the offense like we did the defense."

If the offense sucks in 2014 - go tell Ozzie about it.

When the offense sucks; I'll definitely complain about it and yet; I'll understand why as well. :D

Not a huge fan of BPA all the time to be honest.

Me either!  That philosophy doesn't work well for all scenarios to me.  Sometimes it's alright to draft what is "needed".

That's what we said last year. -_-

Our biggest weakness coming into the draft was the offense. That's were new players could've made the biggest impact for the team. Instead we just made the defense even better, which is nice, but you've got to adress all phases of the game, not just the defense.

Our team pretty much leaves the draft, the way it entered it. Heavily geared towards the defense.

I'm defense minded first and yet, we need to help our offense help our defense!  We need key and solid offensive players not the scraps that's leftover in the draft and now, we're trying to squeeze blood out of a turnip with them.  Smh!

NFL.com

You see that a lot. A players projected draft position being way off if you go by sites such as NFL.com or SI.com. NFL.com also has Cody Latimer as a 4th-5th rounder and he went in the 2nd with talk about possibly going in the 1st without so much as a whisper of it being a reach.

Use those as a general guide and nothing more. Things can change. There is no way those sites put in the same resources in scouting that a team like the Ravens do. That projection was probably make quickly and they moved on.

If there is a huge disparity who are you going to trust more? I'll trust Ozzie.

The defense was not our problem last season. In fact, I bet they would've been top 10, if it were not for the offense struggling to stay on the field.

KO is coming off back surgery, Wagner was not good enough to start last season, Marlon Brown showed flashes of talent, but that's it, Steve Smith and Owen Daniels are nearing the ends of their respective carreers. There are not that many impact players as some want to believe on offense and we are left only hopeing, that those guys will come through for us. Hopefully they will, but things seem way more certain on defense, which is just getting better and better, while the offense is getting the scraps (as you said).

Pre-draft offseason was all offense. They BETTER perform this year!

What position would Jernigan play for us? I always thought he was a 4-3 DT and would convert to a DE in a 3-4. I can't see him playing NT with us having drafted Brandon Williams last year.

I know I missed something now we replaced three lineman from last year who and with whom ? I know oher is gone but I don't recall seeing anyone else being signed or replaced . oher has not been replaced either. your correct we have the exact same offense as last year with smith and daniels in for clark and stokley there is absolutely no reason as all to think we can't finish like we did last year . and most of the idiots know Justin tucker is not going to beat either manning brees , or brady .

edit we did sign a center .

Maybe you gotta give youth a chance. In this case wagner...

He complemented his impressive performance as a pass catcher, with a strong showing as a blocker on the edge. He repeatedly sealed the corner on perimeter runs and effectively neutralized his assigned defender on power plays between the tackles.

-Bucky Brooks on Crockett Gilmore's Senior Bowl.

Sounds like a good cog in the zone scheme.

I agree to a point but with one very big caveat,,,,we need a back up plan . Joe is not going to stay healthy getting  sacked/hit 4-5 times a game and once he gets hurt our season ends right then . nothing I say matters really cause I will be watching this team regardless its just a whole lot more fun when we make the playoffs etc and Tucker is good but he won't outscore the teams we need to outscore to make that happen.

I think at this point of the draft, we should just stick with our current Wide Receiver Corps, than try to get another rookie WR.

We already have our starters with the Smithses.

I'm curious to see how much development comes through for Marlon Brown, Aaron Mellette, and Deonte Thompson.

Jacoby Jones to me should be a good situational deep threat/ special teamer.

your on point tonight and you definitely don't need any help .  wait til our offense struggles again and the inevitable happens again I wonder if these forums will be saying this is a good draft then. wagner wasn't good last year  there was talk of him blossoming under Castillo but it never showed on the field

Can't believe we couldn't come out of this with a freaking WR. I would've bet my life we'd grab one by now.
