Julio Jones trade paid off!?

21 posts in this topic

I hear some guy on talk radio today spouting out that Julio Jones trade has paid off BIG TIME for the Falcons.

Then I read on NFL that the trade was a great move that paid off for the Falcons....

Where did that trade get them? I don't see any Falcons SB titles in the past 3 seasons? Ryan has one playoff win and they treat home like he's a top 5 QB.

Atlanta has so many holes and depth problems letting Go of those picks for Jones.

That trade contributed to the massive holes they have all along that defense, TE, and the offensive line.  As good as he is, they had Roddy White.  They could've stayed put and gotten someone else at receiver if they wanted without losing all those draft picks.  Seriously, you can't make a good argument for that trade.

They should have just taken Torrey and then Justin Houston in the late 2nd. They put building an over the top O over having a balanced team.

Yeah they lost so much depth with all of those picks and while they do have FA to fill holes, that young talent has an impact

Exactly and then you hear them rumored to jump to 1 or 2 to grab Clowney that has BUST potential all over him. They will be bottom dwellers for a while if they go that route

Yeah they need depth, mainly in the trenches. If I were them, I would take advantage of picking before Tampa and try to auction off Evans

Had to look it up, didn't even remember how much they gave up for Jones.

Atlanta gave the Browns five -- five! -- draft picks: their 1st- (27th overall), second- (59th) and fourth-round (124th) picks this year and their first- and fourth-round picks in 2012.

Wow, can't we all agree that was too much?  Yes, Jones is a beast, but........

Those 5 picks ended up being Baldwin which a bust, Greg Little who isn't terribly good either, Owen Marecic who is not with the Browns anymore, Brandon Weeden who is a bust, and Jarius Wright who is still active on the Vikings roster and is some decent WR depth. Those aren't 5 great picks but I think that the Falcons would have gone a different route with those picks anyways so there really is not point in me saying the picks lol. Just thought I would say the players who went with those picks. I think a guy like Houston would have been on the board however for Atlanta and they could have gone that route fairly easily.

Well, if anyone is capable of botching a bunch of draft picks, it's Cleveland.    :D

I agree, Atlanta would have made much wiser choices.

Always fun to play the "what if" game!

Pretty much this.

He's still young though and who knows, maybe in the future the trade will look good but as of now, no. Staying put and drafting Randall Cobb in the 2nd would've been wiser...Of course hindsight is 50/50.

When you look at the overall players in the trade, Atlanta won big time.  However, that is only because Cleveland botched those picks.  If the trade was with a competent team, Atlanta would have lost.  The trading away of the picks is why Atlanta is where they are right now with little depth.

But what exactly did it amount to for the Falcons? A single playoff win? That to me isn't enough for what they sent to Cleveland.

It's just pandering to the Falcons and Thomas Demitroff who is super overrated but the media likes him because he is young, 'flamboyant', and most of all makes himself available to the media.

As good as the Julio is, that trade was supposed to put them over the top and get them to a Superbowl. They looked close at one point but a few years later, and they're currently picking in the top ten. That trade made them devoid of talent at other positions and they currently have quite a few holes because of that trade.

Yep.  They made that move too early.  Julio wasn't the one missing piece at the time of the trade.  He's done very well for them, but had they drafted well for a couple more years, they'd have the depth to make a move like that this year.

I think that's the best argument that the Falcons came out better off, but equally it just means the Browns are useless at drafting. :P

Lol yep they just took Manziel. No way he plays well in the AFC North in the cold and against good defenses
