Johnny U Voted Best QB Ever

28 posts in this topic

Johnny U was one of those rare players that could probably still play and be effective in today's NFL. Defiantly changed the game in HUGE ways. Really good guy too. He was a family friend of one of my childhood friends. Got the opportunity to meet him when I was a kid.

Went to my church. Saw him almost weekly when I was younger. Awesome dude and he transcended the game!

I've always said he's the best quarterback ever, and I'm glad to see others agree.

Between Montana and Young, I'd even take Young

Hard to say what to make of it ... that margin is a bit wide, given it seems to me the under 40 demographic is on line more and would lean heavily to Montana. Lots of whining on the site about how this could only be a rig job. Whatever ... anyone that isn't capable of acknowledging the greatness of Unitas is likely a person who can't comprehend that the world didn't begin the day they were born.

Johnny is the GOAT but this is the wrong forum.  Should be in "Other NFL Teams"

I might tend to disagree with you there.....  Johnny was a Baltimore Football Player....  who's team was the BALTIMORE Colts...  now had he played elsewhere during that time, I might tend to agree with you, but at the time...  They were BALTIMORE's team.

The QBs should only be broken down by eras. There's no way to tell who's the greatest ever.

Exactly!  Everyone sees different things in "their" favorite QB that transcends statistics.  Era has a lot to do with that I think cause what makes Johnny U great to others may be different than what makes Joe Montana great to me and visa versa.

Well, if it were any other position other than QB I would tend to agree with both of you.  But Johnny U took the forward pass and made it a formidable weapon in an era whern running the ball for four quarters was the mode of operation and passing was secondary. His play calling and accurate passing revolutionized the game and set the path for other great passers to follow.

In any era it is, was and will be hard to argue against Johnny Unitas being the Greatest QB of all time.

Johnny is Baltinores greatest football player ever maybe the best ever to play the game period. If it was not for the success and legendary status of the Baltimore Colts and thier tradiition thier wouldnt even be s Baltimore Ravens franchise.

Don`t want to take it away from Johnny Unitas but I don`t like the whole voting thing! If you look back and realize that Donovan McNabb was in the half-final vote…

Would be better if they made it for registered users and not that you can vote each time you call up the webpage!

Let's be honest here for a minute, about 1% of the people that voted actually watched him play so take it for what it's worth. It might be true, but it's impossible to say of course. 99% of the soccer fans will quickly tell you no matter how old they are and whether they've seen the guy play or not that Pele was the greatest player ever. Same with boxing (Ali), Basketball (Chamberlain, outside of MJ) and so on. I find it silly to compare players from different era's. The game was so much different back then, just everything about it. I'm not gonna say anything on this and act like I've studied Johnny because I haven't seen him play either, I can only go by what other people and experts say and at the very least he is a top 3 QB of all time. It's nice to see him get honored like that now even though it doesn't mean much.

qBs are compared to Unitas all the time and not the other way around. He was steely cool, with an unorthodox walk and frame and always in command and confident, cant say that about many. He is a classic with his hunched shoulders, crew cut and his black high tips with his bowlegged walk, like a cowboy from an old western. The greatest in so many ways with character.

No doubt, there was something whacked about that site and the voting. Unitas edged McNabb by about 2% (?) and then completely blew Montana out.

I agree that there is really little point to these types of votes. It is nearly impossible to compare players across generations.

It suffices to say that, whether you wish to claim him the greatest of all time, Johnny U. impacted the game more than any other QB in history.

There really isn't much debate about this... Johnny U is the GOAT, and always will be. I only wish that I'd gotten a chance to watch him live.

Got to shake his hand, Felt like I'd met God himself. In another note ESPN is reporting the passing of Earl Morrall. 1969 M.V.P. Baltimore Colt. Rest in peace, team mates in heaven!

Well deserved - even though I've only seen highlights of him play, I've seen highlights of the QBs that came before and I've seen the QBs that came after - Johnny changed how the QB position was viewed and played, and that to me is what separates him.  Yeah if you stuck him or Sammy Baugh or Y.A. Tittle in this era, they probably wouldn't do so well, but I can't look at a guy like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers and say they revolutionized the position, just refined what others had done.  Plus, the training is so much different now than it was then.  All of those guys I named at the top had real jobs during the offseason to do in order to feed their families.  So the only way I can compare is to say that the guys who created the prototype have to be considered the best of all time - everyone else is just improving on the original product.

There's only one 'Johnny football' in NFL, and it isn't you manziel!

Maziel is just another bust. Next Colt McCoy kinda deal.

Anyway I never ever seen Unitas play but I know that he is a legend. Very underrated though.
