Is Flacco FINALLY gaining respect from the media? This is weird

324 posts in this topic

Matt Ryan would more than likely have two SB's by now if he had this defense to come to his aid and had the ability to absorb the Ravens offense in small doses the way Joe was brought along by Cam.

LOL.

And please tell me, who would they have beaten to win these two SBs? Which of their playoff losses wouldn't have happened. Besides last year they haven't even come close to the Super Bowl so this comment makes absolutely zero sense.

Sounds like the topic is turning into a Ryan over Flacco debate.

I don't think there is much of a comparison here in the fact that we have two very different styles of QB with different skill sets. Flacco is a more big bodied, big armed, drop back long ball, cold weather, Air Coryell type of passer. Ryan is an accurate short game rhythm west coast type of passer that is very cerebral.

So who you would pick if you had the choice of the number 1 pick of the 08 draft probably comes down to which offensive system you prefer.

I'd say the article was accurate, and that most people and analysts (especially fantasy football fans) would pick Ryan over Flacco, or west coast over air coryell.

But history shows that both the Ravens and Falcons got their picks right and most of the rest of the league didn't!

Anyways, I do think the "media" is having a harder time dogging Flacco. Also just you wait, in 2-3 years when Brady, Manning, and Brees are retiring or very close to it then Joe all of a sudden is one of the best of the rest. Remember Joe still has more upside which is amazing considering how much playing time he's gotten for someone that is his age. I also think it's sort of going to be a common thread of comparing Flacco and Ryan because of their age, being first round picks, and being day one starters. There really isn't anyone else you can compare with Joe, as everyone else is much older or much younger.

Matt Ryan is a non-entity to me. The guy I always compare Flacco to is Eli Manning. As far as I'm concerned they're the same guy.

I really don;t think Ryan is getting a fair shake from many here.  Joe's my boy, but if Ryan landed with the Ravens I think that we'd have had very similar results.  Joe undeniably has a stronger arm, but Ryan has prove accurate.  The Ravens just know how to bring a young QB along.  Even Kyle "i can sack myself" Boller had a winning record as a rookie.

Just look at the culture of the two teams and see why this team has been consistently successful.  If Joe was in Atlanta he may have just one play-off win too.  It's just the right person in the right place at the right time.

So, on NFL.com, they did their 2008 redraft; Ryan went #1 overall and Flacco #3. The analysts were talking Joe up, explaining how  you can't argue with his body of work since entering the league.

Another article mentions how Flacco had a disappointing year due to injuries, washed up players and throwing to unestablished guys with butter fingers. Any other time, they would have ignored those facts and chastised him (case in point: during the season, they beat up Flacco for not "overcoming those obstacles").

A third article on the site (cant find the link) talked about how (paraphrase) Flacco was set up to fail, and the supporting cast needs to do it's job.

Now of course, this is not exactly news most of us. It is just interesting to me that prior to last year, Flacco has carried this team to awesome achievements, yet he could do nothing right in their eyes -- our success was always due to everyone BUT Flacco. So you would think that after last year, when these guys FINALLY had the chance to bury Flacco, instead of saying "see, we were right all along", they did a complete 180 and defend him from the very criticism they have been dishing out.

Flacco the media darling? The world is now in complete disarray.....up is down, left is right, right is wrong....what is going on???

DAMN!  See what you started? Gotta read nonsense from hardballs and a whole bunch of other crap about the choke artist known as matty ice.  Oh, well, I just wont read anymore.   :P

Absolutely!  Cause to me; the offense will only go as far as Flacco can lead them.  And with this upcoming season...we have new coaches, a new O.C., there's the draft of new players to fill holes and needs on the O-line, he has resigned players coming back in Pitta and Jacoby a young WR who is slowly making his mark on the team in Marlon Brown and new additions in Steve Smith and Owen Daniels.  Therefore to me...NO EXCUSES to be made and NO EXCUSES to be accepted for another piss poor offensive showing like last season.

Could not agree more with you @Mili! Bisciotti, Ozzie and gang have totally excuse proofed Flacco for the upcoming season. However, Flacco being as streaky as he tends to be, will have to show more consistency and I believe this his seventh year, he will finally either prove his critics totally wrong or maybe right. I would like to believe Flacco starting this year will begin to put up numbers similar to those put up by Peyton, Brees, Brady and Rodgers. There is simply no reason he can't. He has all the tools physically.

Ryan was asked to be a leader from day 1 in the building, which included a rookie LT and resurrect a franchise that had the stain of Micheal Vick's dog fighting scheme front and center.   There's no debate IMO, I'd take Ryan all day over Flacco.

As opposed to the supplemental draft second year LT we had?  Or the fact Ryan can't play outside when its not 85 degrees?  Or the fact he gets his lunch fed to him by defenses that remotely know what they're doing?

Ryan isn't winning any Super Bowls playing in the AFC North.  I'd be surprised if he got out of the first round in this division.

While I dont necessarily think he will put up huge numbers in Kubiak's sytem, year seven is typically the year where QBs put it all together and become whatever they are destined to become....kinda like the "third year WR" thing.

I think it would be wise to temper expectations a little this year, simply because we have no idea what a 35 year old Steve Smith has left in the tank, or what to expect from a 31 year old TE coming off a major injury, or whether Zuttah and Wagner/a rookie is enough to fix the OL. But I DO think the FO has done enough to prevent a repeat of last year. If our offense is remotely that bad this year, it is on the players.

If flacco fails to put up at least a good performance this year, don't be surprised if flacco gets an earful.

He should. No one can deny what he has done for this team in his first five years, but he needs a bounce-back year, especially while he is getting paid what he is. I understand that Flacco's job was made more difficult last year by a crappy O-line, a crappy running game, and a mediocre-at best receiving corps, but when he is getting paid nearly $20 mil a year Flacco is expected to play better.

That being said I expect him to have a good season in 2014. The coaching staff and FO helped him out a lot with the recent signings. They owe it to him after trading away one of his top targets after we won the Super Bowl, which also didn't help matters any.

Yeah, sure, if you love 12-14 wins followed by a home playoff loss.

Anyway, Flacco played poorly along with the rest of the offense last season. Instead of lifting his performance, it dropped right with the others, which was disappointing for me being a huge Flacco fan. He was certainly not the main culprit for our offensive struggles, but he contributed. I still feel had he not gotten hurt against Detroit that we would have found our way into the playoffs, and I would have fully expected the entire team to step up in postseason play.

As for this year, I fully expect the whole team to play better. Re-signing key free agents was a big key because we don't have to wait for new players to gel together as much as last year. The additions are seasoned professionals who should have no problem making their presence felt on the field and in the locker room. Here's to another epic playoff run, and then let the critics step up and try to knock Flacco and our squad again.

Truth right here. I'm not expecting a 4500-5000 yard season out of the guy under Kubiaks system. I would like to see efficiency, PA bombs connecting, and a solid TD/INT ratio. Most importantly, dominate time of possession like the Texans have done for a few years now.

I think Flacco might finally come through this year and I think Kubiak will be really good for Flacco. I don't expect 5000 yards or anything crazy but I do expect 4,000 and 25 TDs. He has the talent around him now, now time to prove the doubters wrong.

Flacco gets an earful regardless. Kind of the point here - he's getting some respect in the media.

But I'm sure all this "respect" nonsense will blow over as soon as the season starts. :)

Well if Flacco has good numbers this year then he will be 1/7 ........  I do not have the statistics handy but has Flacco ever been in the to 10 QB's statically speaking. Just in the top 30%??????? He has had GREAT defenses but that is it. What If Flacco had a middle of the road defense during his career ?    If he has not , why would you guys think that the media disrespects him?  BTW, the article/interview/commentary you guys are referencing is NOT that Joe is GREAT, ( they are not praising him because he had the most touchdowns or passing yards like Manning or Brady ) its more like giving Joe excuses for being in the bottom 20% of the QB's last year.  It amazing how 2 people can read the same thing and come out of it with 2 different conclusions.  BTW also  these were 2 football media types, that have this opinion,  out of hundreds  in this country.  its NOT the consensus of the football media......  whew

No one can take what Joe did in the playoffs 2 years ago, but he was far from perfect and very fortunate on a lot of Jump balls........God bless Boulden.  a non existent FS in Denver and special teams in the SB.

Nice spelling on Boldin. And cool story!

Edit - And I'm not even a Flacco homer. Just thought this post and deserved my attention.

Typical flawed and inaccurate outsider talk imo!  What jump balls do you speak of man?  And, it's the "non-existent" denver safety's fault that Joe Flacco was able to toss the pass over his head and into the hands of Jacoby Jones....who also had to make a play and catch the ball?  And yep!  In the SB....IT WAS ALL the special teams and their 1 TD that won the SB for us and Joe Flacco tossing 3 TD passes to Boldin, Pitta and Jacoby before halftime.....HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT VICTORY!  Ooooook!  lol!

Truth be told, they were a non pass interference call away from playing the Ravens in the Superbowl.

I could of swore a jump ball pass was part of the offense.  If you have a skilled receiver who can go get it, accuracy is not the key, you put it up there for him to go get it.  Remind me how you guys beat Seattle again in the Superbowl.  I'll wait!!

For the love of God if you're going to use the "Boldin" bailed him out argument can you at least spell his name right.

It always amuses me how people say that our Super Bowl run was a result of Boldin.  Yeah, he bailed us out on quite a few offensive drives, but that's the purpose of a possession receiver.  Joe knew that he could throw it up and Boldin would have a good chance at wrestling the ball out of the air.  Its almost akin to saying that Torrey bails Joe out every time Joe throws the long ball, because Torrey managed to get under the pass and catch it.

Joe can be streaky at times, and that's something he needs to work on.  Last year was horrendous, part of that lays on Joe's shoulders, but a big part of it also lays on the rest of the offense as well.  How can you expect a QB to play efficiently when there is no running game to speak of, you have one real receiver playing the game who up until last year was mostly a long ball receiver, and an offensive line that blocked so poorly they might as well have been sitting on the sidelines.

Joe can only do so much, the rest of the team has to show up as well.  In 2012, the rest of the team showed up.  Last year, and in some of Joe's early years, that was not the case.

Also don't say the defense is what allowed Joe to win.  That's just stupid.

Hmmm....the first time in his career that Flacco had a middle of the road defense, he carried the team to the SB.

And the second part is the whole point of this thread! Yes, they are justifying Flacco's poor season. When has that ever happened? They crap on the guy even while he is hoisting the Lombardi, now all of a sudden they are "making excuses".

That's what I'm saying Elli.  Of course, I want Flacco and this offense to do extremely well cause they embarrassed the hell out of me last season and I still have a bitter taste in my mouth towards the offense because of it!  So that is why I am not so overly hype up about these nice moves that are being made.  But, I also get tired of all of the excuses that are constantly made for Joe Flacco and why he can't do this that or the other after 7 years as a starter.  C'mon!  And yet, I also understand that everything is not his fault!  With these new additions to the offense, resigning of players and the draft upcoming, the excuses are officially dead to me!  Let's see it on the field!

boldin had 1 jump ball in that game, his other catches that you're referring to as jump balls were actually perfectly placed balls on comeback routes and seams, one of the latter going for a opening drive TD, he also perfectly placed a bomb which would have went for a td had torrey not been tackled from behind while the ball was in the air(and no PI was called). or how about joe flinging one into the end zone right past patrick willis(who was in great position to make a play) into dennis pittas hands so fast the defenders didn't even see the ball in the air. how about joes footwork absolutely schooling one of the best pass rushes in the nil for a whole game?

joe flacco absolutely tore it up in the super bowl and all of the playoffs, that safety from denver misread that ball because joe put so much hang time under it that he was confused as to where the ball was gonna come down at, and this is coming after dodging a solid rush by dumervil and von miller.

what about the abc championship where our coach decided to put the game in joes hands, and he responded by lighting up the field, stepping up in the face of the rush, picking apart the secondary methodically, and making all the right calls at the line.

the team rode joe flaccos arm to that super bowl win, from start to finish, joe tore it up, period, he made bolding look better

This right here. We were trailing the Pats at the half because we were playing too conservatively. We decided right there to give Flacco the game and we go on to blow them out. What really started that blowout was the drive Flacco had to take the lead 14-13 and that was Flacco on that drive although Pitta did well recovering from that hit he took and getting a TD on the next play.

Dude, Flacco had a great defense? So what? You're a Steelers fan. What leg have you to stand on? What did Ben do to win his first SB? OH, right...

9/21 Cmp 123 Yrds 0 TD 2 INT

The only passing TD was thrown by Antwaan Randle El. Maybe he should have been the starting QB for the Steelers. How does it stack up to Flacco's first SB?

22/33 Cmp 287 Yrds 3 TD 0 INT (which is btw, still leagues better than Big Bens second SB performance)

As far as I can tell Flacco has won his team as many SBs as Roethlisberger...1.
