Anybody Who Thinks You Just Need Two Feet Down In The Endzone Without The Ball Crossing The Plane Read This!

24 posts in this topic

remember the dolphins game last year?? (hate to bring it up but im tryin to make a point) troy smith drove us down filed at the end and we got a game tying field goal. we had it 3rd and goal i believe and troy through a pass to someone (i forget who) and the reciever caught it with both feet in the end zone but the ball was out. they didnt call it a touchdown, and we had to kick a field goal and lost in overtime. so according to some of you peoples logic, we shoulda won that game, but we didnt because the ball has to break the plane of the goal line no matter what!!

you are right.
100%
But the ball on the one inch line,,,,
probabally would have gone in on the next down.

BUT,
it matters not.
Game over.
Tough loss, time for Dallas...

Exactly. One of the worst refs in NFL history screwed us.

If anything, this'll at least prompt a clarification of the rule by Mike Perreira on NFL Total Access.

Or, if necessary, this'll prompt a rewording/reworking of the rule by the competition committee in the offseason.

This kind of crap happens so many times i just count it as the "missed call the referee give out on the ravens which happens to lose us the game"

I agree totally and how bout that play in the 2nd quarter, I believe, where they ruled a Pittsburgh running play on 3rd and short a first down, without measuring and when the replays clearly showed we stopped the runner shy of the 1st down.

I would have to say we lost this game by virtue of not stopping the Steelers final drive in its totality, but getting bad calls like these that result in points scored and games lost...well...that is hard to accept...but to our credit under Harbaugh there were no meltdowns like at the New England game last year...all in all mistakes will be made by the refs...we should have done better on offense, and the D crumbled at the last, which it has unfortunately done a few games this year.
It doesn't need to cross it just be on it. Use logic here.. they would have felt pretty dumb spotting the ball with the tip resting against the goal line when the rulebook states:
I just don't think there was enough conclusive evidence to overturn.

Steelers have the worst 4th down conversion rate against the Ravens = fg, overtime and a fair game.

Actually the ball was never over the plane when he had possesion. And the touch down definition is as follows.

Touchdown: When any part of the ball, legally in possession of a player inbounds, breaks the plane of the opponent

Loses hurt.. being a Steelers fan I've been in your shoes many times. If anything is to blame for the loss it's letting yoru QB get dropped out of FG range then giving up a 90 yard drive in closing minutes.
Thats the problem. The call on the field was not a TD. That means for it to be overturned it has be conclusive. The fact that we are even argueing about and the announcers were unclear about it says that it was not CONCLUSIVE.

I'll say it again. If it was ruled a TD, I would understand if the ruling on the field stood. But the ruling on the field was that it was no TD and there's no way there was enough evidence to actually overturn that call.

If the refs would call a holding call on the Ravens o-line then they would have been knocked out of field goal rage twice!

Too many times this has happened to us. I do agree our D picked a bad time to let us down, We were screwed plain and simple as it always is in these situations. If the game is in the Refs hands the Ravens will not win. I am just sick right now, but gotta shake it off we are still in the playoff hunt and could get another shot at the Squealers.

A Ravens defender picked off a pass in that exact spot in the same manner Holmes caught it. Imagine he was tackled in the same exact way in the same spot Holmes was after he got the INT. The ball spot would be on the inch line but the refs would rule it a touchback. Do you want to know why? Both of the defenders feet would clearly be in the end zone and he would have full control of the ball. His momentum and the hit laid on him carried him out around the one. In the NFL this is known as

If they mark Holmes down on the one like they originally did, they are rewarding him with what would be

That is my problem with the call. If it had been ruled a TD there was not enough to over rule and say that it was not. The ref spotted the ball just outside the goal line because in his eyes the ball did not break the plane. In review of the play there was not enough to say that it did to call a TD. The replay ref reviewed the play as if the call on the field was a TD and it was not, the call on the field was that it was not a TD.

Feet on the ground counts for a catch not a TD. The ball still has to break the plane just any other time you score. That's what the final explanation was.

I can't see how you can get conclusive evidence needed to overturn the play. That zebra got two blatant calls wrong and needs to be put out to pasture.

Holding happens on every play. The phantom TD and the free first down when no first down was earned, along with the missed delay of game call, contributed to 10 points in 13-9 game. It's a joke. The refs should wear yellow and black instead of white and black.
