Mark Cuban: "Greedy " NFL Is 10 Years From Implosion

24 posts in this topic

Ok. Now the professional business people are seeing it. And I thought we were all just dumb fans complaining.

Wow. I didn't know BR was the official sports section of CNN ? Did they buy them out or something ?

Article:

You know that billion-dollar enterprise otherwise known as the NFL? Yeah, it's going to crash and burn in a decade.

At least that's the opinion of often controversial Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban...

"Jealous" Mark Cuban is 10 minutes away from his next pout/tantrum

He may be right to an extent, the grow is extremely high, but to say it will implode in 10 years is far-fetched. The NFL takes steps to make sure every fanbase is engaged each season, all year long.

I wonder what he means by "getting greedy"? The proposed 14-team playoff pool? They're at higher revenue-sharing and 'mandatory cap spending' levels than ever before.

Yea. I thought there was gonna be some reference to all the rule changes that Goodell is trying to implement (as an example: heading towards no more kickoffs) or rookies not getting the big pay check right out of college, etc... But unless Cuban didn't explain himself clearly, or some of his points were left out of the article, I don't really understand what he's talking about... as of yet.

I guess he's using his "Shark Tank" evaluation skills to critique the league ? He needs to elaborate further...

I understand where cube us coming from. Most of the time I'd disagree w/ his opinion..but this one does have some truth to it.

The past 5 years, the league has been way too aggressive on finding ways to earn extra profits. Its watering down the sport.

I love the rookie wage scale. No way that Sam Bradford, Jamarus Russell, Matt Stafford, etc can come out of school and make more than actual good players in the league.

Rule changes, eh, they haven't made one that equalled less ratings so why should they worry (regardless of fans personal opinions, they still tune in)? Not like the NBA is super refined, either.

Did some digging and it looks like he's upset over the NFL's week expansion in Thursday night. http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/_/id/10662203/dallas-mavericks-owner-mark-cuban-says-greedy-nfl-10-years-away-implosion

"They're trying to take over every night of TV," Cuban said. "Initially, it'll be, 'Yeah, they're the biggest-rating thing that there is.' OK, Thursday, that's great, regardless of whether it impacts [the NBA] during that period when we cross over. Then if it gets Saturday, now you're impacting colleges. Now it's on four days a week. ...

A few points from that quote:

1. He's mad that the NFL will sap NBA ratings on Thursday - much like they do whenever the NFL is on lol.

2. Saturday games, if they're scheduled, are usually only played when the NCAA season is on hold (between bowl games) or over.

3. If you want to talk about over-saturating the market consider that the NFL regular season is 256 games. Compare that to the NBA's 1230 or MLB's 2430.

A big reason people love the NFL is that each game actually matters, you get a smaller chance to shine compared to potentially thousands of games in an NBA or MLB career (most NFL players are lucky to make it to the hundreds).

This also carries over to the NFL post-season where it is do-or-die, one game to decide it. This is why the NFL and NCAA (BBall) post-seasons are SO much more popular than their counterparts.

It's more than 10, but unless they cure cte and fix the declining rates of enrollment in youth football the nfl could die before the end of the century.

I do agree that the NFL should cut back on non-Sunday games, but right now the NFL is probably doing better than any other sport in the world.

I actually think the rookie wage scale and mandatory college time is what makes the NFL a much better environment for a young player than the NBA.  Cuban needs to take a look at his own sport where you have a bunch of 18 and 19 year olds going to college for one season, not only depriving someone else of a scholarship and spot, but then without finishing their degrees or being ready physically and mentally for the NBA, making a leap to playing a game with grown men, and watching so many of them flame out in a few seasons.

Each team plays once a week. The added games on Thurs and Mon allow teams to get the national spotlight sometimes. 3 out of 7 is not bad when all the other sports teams(including the NBA) has one team play that many games in a week. The Saturday game is actually replacing a Thurs game.

It's tough on me cuz 3:am comes early on Tues and Fri. But oversaturating the market? Thats envy and jealousness blowing out of Cuban's mouth.

The NFL is considering doing some things that would be pretty stupid in my opinion, however anybody who says that it will implode within the next decade or so has absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

And as has been alluded to, a major reason for the NFL being as popular as it is would be because of MLB and the NBA "over-saturating the market."

Right now I just think "if it ain't broke don't fix it." Cuban's problem was stated in an earlier post that Thursday is a big TV night for the NBA. That being said I don't think the NFL can add other days to the schedule on one hand and preach player health on the other. Trying to play both sides of the fence doesn't work in life and will not work in the NFL. Outside of that, Mark's biggest problem, IMO. is his ego and the fact that he wants in on this. Like it or not football is America's new "favorite past time." Always leave them wanting more, wish I could credit who said it, just too old to remember. My thought.

Exactly B!  I've said this time and time again to my son who is a HUGE basketball fan (Miami Heat).  I always tell him that the NFL is better cause in their playoffs....it's "ONE AND DONE!"  While in the NBA series, they get 7 chances to beat one team.  Plus, as you mentioned our (NFL) season is relatively shorter than the NBA and MLB.

I'm surprised many here disagree with Cuban. I know I'm 100% in agreement. The NFL is getting too greedy and way too hypocritical.

Ok so I don't totally agree with the implosion part but they are getting too greedy. They want to extend the season to 18 games, hypocrites. That alone goes against all this player safety nonsense. Thursday Night Football goes against player safety by not giving players enough rest in between games. Adding to the playoffs, that right there is getting greedy just for more revenue and to sacrifice the integrity of the playoffs.

NFL won't implode but fan backlash is a big possibility going forward.

I tend to agree with you, JO_75, in that the NFL is getting too greedy, and the league's stance on expanding either the regular season or the playoffs or both is just too much for me to deal with.

I like the season just the way it is, at 16 games, and I can accept the current playoff structure, although I was fond of the five team per conference playoff approach from a number of years ago.

I also believe we may just see a fan backlash - possibly within the next seven to ten years.

I'm sure the NFL is terrified of all the backlash and criticism it will get from all those fans buying all those jerseys and tickets.

The NFL won't give a rat's you know what until they start losing money, and if you think fans will stop buying tickets and jerseys in the next ten years you're dumber than a box of rocks.

I'm starting to believe what Mark Cuban is saying here. Did we really need a show dedicated to the NFL Schedule release? Expanding Playoffs? Saturday Games? Now I read that he wants to make the draft 4 days?

Mark Cuban seems to really be spot on with his assessment from what I see. I love the NFL but it's turning into publicity stunt after publicity stunt

I too am now beginning to think that Cuban may have a point. All Goodell and the owners care about is money. We deserve a better class of management.

But unfortunately it doesn't seem as though we'll get it any time soon.

Wonder which sponsor Cuban will choose to adorn the Mavericks jerseys? McDonalds, Walmart, Lowes? Heck, why not all three!

Want to talk about greed, talk to the new NBA Commissioner about putting advertiser patches right on game uniforms - LINK

"It just creates that much more of an opportunity for our marketing partners to get that much closer to our fans and to our players," Silver said at the conference, put on by the Sports Business Daily/Journal. "It gives us an opportunity just to have deeper integration when it comes to those forms of sponsorship."

Under the guise of 'fan integration', disgusting.

Or you can talk to Cuban himself. Does anyone remember his fan-made uniform contest. Fans could submit their uniform designs to the team who would select the best one and the Mavericks would wear them. Pretty cool, right? The not so cool part...

Who will own your design ? The minute you post it, the Mavs will.  If you think its horrible that the Mavs own your design. Do not post. If you think its cool that the Mavs could possibly use your design and you will have eternal bragging rights , then post away. If we really like your design and you , I may even throw in some tickets.

Bragging rights? "May" give you tickets? That's so cheap, Scrooge McDuck cringed. The benevolent Cuban should have just hired some designers - or made it himself - if he wasn't going to give rights, or compensation, to others.

Back in 2010, Cuban loaned $5M to the United Football League (UFL), even though he had no stake in any team or the league. Looks like it was just something to try to hurt the NFL so I guess the bitterness and inferiority has been festering awhile.

--------------------------------

Cuban may have a point but you know what they say about people in glass houses... The NFL is in the business of entertaining and making money and they're very good at both. More people probably tune into the draft or a schedule release program than games of other leagues. An NFL schedule or draft is headline news, in the NBA those things are after-thoughts.

Are they getting too fat? Maybe. But, on the other hand, people are complaining about NFL withdrawl after the draft has been pushed back.

This just rings of jealousy and ego to me - Cuban has no shortage of either.

Just curious, what is it you have against Cuban? You hate the Mavericks, you hate Shark Tank? I mean the fact the NFL is discussing expanded playoffs and now to top it off, just even thinking of expanding the draft to FOUR DAYS, FOUR DAYS! Just shows how right Cuban was. Now as I said, he exaggerated about the imploding part but everything he said about them being greedy, is absolutely right.

During training camp, players wear jerseys with sponsors on them. Look at the Patriots and any picture of a player in camp. Their jersey has Gillette on them. Ravens have sponsors on their camp jerseys as well. So it's not like the NBA is the first to put sponsors on jerseys. For as great as it is that the NFL promotes Breast Cancer Awareness, the pink jerseys, shoes and gloves players wear is one big month long sponsorship of it.

Yes the NFL Draft is headline news, but I would rarely call releasing the schedule headline news. I didn't watch NFL Network or ESPN or Fox Sports when they released the schedule. I did what most smart fans probably did, just looked up THEIR team's schedule and then I browsed at other schedules, all ONLINE. Also, the whole reason the Draft got moved back to May was due to some Easter event that was supposed to happen at Radio City, but got cancelled due to lack of interest. Radio City Music Hall forced the NFL to move it for some Easter Event that ended up cancelled and now we could be on day 2 of the 2014 Draft right now.

Cuban is a loud mouth and a fool. Insulting to players, personnel, and fans alike.

Of course the NFL is "greedy", they are a business, they have to make money. My post was the just to highlight the hypocrisy.

They wouldn't be considering expanding the playoffs or the draft unless people would watch, though. Consider, too, that the NBA has 30 teams and 16 make the playoffs, to go on and play a maximum of 7 game series so the NBA has between 32-54 post season games (hoping my math is right). While the NFL, even if they expanded, would only have 13 playoff games.

I looked up our schedule online after the fact as well JO but heard about various team's schedules on CNN, Yahoo, etc.

But none of these things are what Cuban is mad about. He's made that the Thursday games are now on basic cable and he well find himself on the loser column on the ratings that day as well.

Hows that for interesting. ...

That's a little deceiving because the revenue and profit go to the owners and employees who then pay taxes on it. NHL, PGA, and I think NBA are the same way.
