[News] Ravens Trade For Tampa Bay Offensive Lineman Jeremy Zuttah

310 posts in this topic

with this move it sure looks like we are going defense (ha ha clinton dix) or a d-lineman in the 1st rd. imo. a lot of right tackles and guards will be available in the 2nd or 3rd round if we still have the need for one before the draft depending on if osemele moves to rt or wagner/jensen/reid/mims can get it done. i do not see us drafting a receiver in the 1st 2 rounds. welcome to the ravens family zuttah

Ozzie seems to be making moves to improve the O-line....good!  But I'm still reserving any excitement about this offense until the first 3 games in the regular season.  That'll speak volumes to me!

Right now at this point in time... if we can find a cheap veteran RT in free agency and maybe a cheap 1 year stop gap FS to plug in... I wouldn't mind at all to see us trade our 1st and 3rd this year, and a 2nd next year to move up for Sammy Watkins. I know this wont happen and Im going to get negged but its my opinion.

If I were a betting man, I'd rank our first round options in the following order...

1. FS

2. Pass catcher

3. Offensive line

4. Defensive line

Valid request. Problem is... that price you just named won't get it done. To move up to get Watkins, you probably have to get to #2, which would essentially cost us the same thing or more than what it cost the Redskins to move up and get RGIII.

I'd say the minimum for us to get Watkins is our two firsts and two second round picks, and I'm not sure that gets it done either.

I was more referring to paying $10+ million to Alex Mack, when we can still get a good player for half the price (and we did). I think getting Zuttah was a great move. I've only heard positive things about him from Bucs fans.

Where did you get the impression that Alex Mack will get 10M per season?

1. He's fully guaranteed that this season.

2. It wouldn't be that much on a long-term deal, but even at the $7-8m per year average range, he's still out of a realistic price range for us.

I honestly didn't see that coming but.... What a pleasant surprise!

I currently reside in Tampa and have not missed a game in 2 LOOOOOOOONG seasons down here lol. I assure u this guy can play! Heck I wouldn't be shocked if Zutta makes a pro-bowl as a Raven. Great foundation with Monroe KO Yanda and Zutta. 4 solid starters as last year we had 2 after KO got hurt. Besides there's great depth in Geno, Reid, and Wagner is someone gets banged up.

The top paid center (Ryan Khalil) got a 6-year $49 million contract. That's $8 million a year. Mack will likely ask for more than that, especially if a team plans on offering an unmatchable contract.

I like Terrence Brooks as a 2nd round FS .

If we couldn't get Mack, a veteran who has starts at both Center and Guard was the next best thing...

Not at 10M,Only the Raiders have enough cap space to get him.It was the next best thing.

I never heard of him. Is he worth a starting job?

Well, the fact that Ozzie gave up draft a pick for him suggest that he at least has the promise... If he really has what it takes to start for us... he'll have the pre-season to prove himself.

The GM that gave that contract was also fired shortly after. He also did ill advised top of the market contracts to Deangelo Williams and Charles Johnson that year if I recall correctly which now have the Panthers in cap jail.

I'm not even sure Nick Mangold got that much money, and he's the best C in the game IMO.  I wouldn't be surprised if Mack is more in the 7M/year range, which is still out of our price range to get back to your original point. Mack was more of a dream as far as our team was concerned but I'm more than happy with the acquisition of Zuttah.

this is good for gino and jensen. it buys them time to improve their mindset and get there bodies where they need to be to play center in the nfl. as far as zuttah being the 22nd and 24th ranked center the past 2 years has more to do with the overall play of that whole line in tampa which wasnt that great just like ours. he has not given up a sack in 2 years and that is music to mine and flaccos ears. having yanda osemele and monroe next to him will move his ranking up even higher.

Im glad Ozzie finally got a Center. Now I just checked Rotoworld for the sabermetrics on this guy and where he ranked in the NFL because I never heard of him. The good news is hes better then Gino, but not a Pro bowler. Out of 35 possible Centers Gino ranked dead last last year, Zuttah ranked 22nd. He more athletic durable and younger he also will have the protection of 2 Pro bowlers Yanda and K.O. at G. And Rotoworld said Ravens are trying to do longterm deal with him, we'll see.

Definitely better then what we had though.

This is an amazing pickup. We go from the worst ranked center (per PFF) to the 22nd ranked center. Ozzie is known for his ability to obtain compensatory picks every year, so think of this trade as giving up one of those. We're giving up a late draft pick for a proven commodity. He may not be the best center out there but we don't need, and can't afford, the best players at every position. Zuttah has the size, experience, and versatility that our line needs. RT is all that we have left to address, Ozzie is building another winner.

This is a HUGE upgrade. Not too mention his skill set best fits our Gary's scheme. Bring in one more get to compete with Wagner, and we can truly go best player available in the draft
