[News] Ravens Trade For Tampa Bay Offensive Lineman Jeremy Zuttah

5th rounder, and we have no idea what position he will play, although LG or Center seem like the only logical two options it could be.

If they gave up a 5th round, they didn,t give up much.

Mack has always been a pipe dream. He's way too expensive. I'm quite sure Ozzie never seriously considered him. Far out of our price range.

Hahh, Aaron Wilson has just backed me up:

"Sources say Ravens have high opinion of Alex Mack, but thought all along it would be too complicated and expensive to pull it off." (source: Aaron Wilson on twitter)

It makes sense cause the guy only played 9 games at center. Why give up a pick for a guy when you could sign a true center in free agency like De La Puente who is young and would have cost about the same.

you dont even know what Zuttah costs yet. After the deal gets done, i pretty much guarantee it will have been less complicated and expensive than signing De La Puente, Mack, or any other Free Agent you were looking at.

The reason the article says that he will challenge Gino for the starting role.....and the reason -every- new Raven, whether it is a draft pick, trade or FA pickup....will have an article saying the same thing.......is because ***nobody*** on this team is just handed a starting job. You *earn* it here.

Yes, it's Zuttah's job to lose, but if he walked in here and played like a total bum in the preseason, guess what? He would *not* be the starter.   *That*  is why you will see this every single time.

OK, that's alright. He was probably brought in to start - and he has the pre-season to prove himself.

The good thing is Zuttah is going to have a lot of time and all the OTA's to gel with the rest of the line. Same with S.Smith by training camp they should all know eachother pretty well.

De La Puente had two Pro Bowl guard next to him in Grubbs and Evans. Carl Nicks and Davin Joseph combined to play just 9 games last season, both suffered season-ending injuries last year. Jeremy Zuttah will be an upgrade at the Center position and could move to left guard depending on injuries. The Bucs got Evan Dietrich-Smith in free agency and his salary cap figure would be cheaper than Zuttah the next two seasons.

To me, the idea that a division rival would allow a player that they clearly consider to be top quality to walk away to another division team while having plenty of money to be able to afford to keep him never made any sense to me.

I think too many fans thought that Mack was a FA and we could just simply get him anytime we wanted to. I would have said at the absolute peak of the discussions (which was prior to signing Monroe), we had maybe a 10% realistic chance of landing him.

I just don't think fans ever really understood the business side of such a move, and how incredibly difficult it is to make something like that happen.

And I guess we can pretty much be sure that Zuttah had other suitors - reports say the Bucs were planning to cut him. If Ozzie didn't wait for that and agreed to the trade, that must mean there was competition...

I still wish we could have afforded Alex Mack from the Browns.... I don't see why if he wants to be here why the Browns tagged him just to keep him out of the division.. maybe we should have done that last year with Kruger.... I know we should not take this stuff personal but I take this move by the Browns personal..

The Browns tagged him because hes a good player, they could afford to tag him, and probably wanted more time to negotiate a deal.

We didn't tag Kruger because Kruger wasn't worth the price to tag him, and we really couldn't afford to pay a player that much anyway.

Truthfully i don't want Osemele at RT. Yeah he was good but he was a beast at LG. I would rather see him stay were he is.

I guess the main cause of the false optimism about getting Mack was Mack's agent who said he could construct a deal that the Browns would find very hard to match. I think a lot of fans took it word by word - thinking that it's Mack's agent who constructs the actual deal - whereas he only said that IF HE WAS A GM, he could construct such a deal. that was nothing more than some PR work on his behalf. no wonder Mack seemed to raise no interest so far...

I think it's almost guaranteed he'll end up back in Cleveland.

I think we all wish so... but that darn cap limit...

Why would the Ravens pay a center 10m when we have found and won a Super Bowl with a guy like Matt Birk for a million?

Age? Health situation?

Ozzie just keeps doing his thing. This has the potential to be an outstanding deal. The part I liked the best is not allowing any sacks. Way to go Ozzie! Welcome to the Ravens Jeremy Zuttah. Hope you have a great Pro-Bowl career here with us.

I agree BioLarzen, The browns always look for what the Ravens let go so they can gather them up. But got to chark up another magicical act for our Wizard of Ozz on getting our offense primed for a productive run and passing attack for 2014.

Birk was a solid player for us during his time here. I just think you can still have a good player at a much more appealing price tag. Historically, the Ravens only give big contracts to their own.

Yeah, he was a solid C - but in 2012 he was 35 years old - and also, he had routinely had his knee drained in about every off-season his last couple of seasons. that's why he contemplated retirement the last 2-3 seasons.

Zutta is only 27 and is relatively healthy. Of course he's more expensive.

I was more referring to paying $10+ million to Alex Mack, when we can still get a good player for half the price (and we did). I think getting Zuttah was a great move. I've only heard positive things about him from Bucs fans.
