Safety Darian Stewart a Raven

No one thought much of corey graham, Carey Williams, ihedigbo, James Harrison when they were signed.

While you do have a point, I'm still going to think of Stewart as a rotational SS. Part of me thinks that we go get Clark for the Vet Min and rotate him and Stewart in and out. Other part of me thinks that's a stupid idea.

I don't like the Clark idea really at all. And Stewart has played both safety spots. I would be very curious to see how we intend to use him. Something about this signing screams steal. I also forgot to mention Daryl smith and jacoby jones. Corey redding.

He's definitely a SS type guy but like Elam he has the range to play either position even if he better suited to SS. It could give us the ability to have two rangy hard hitters out there that are more interchangeable compared with Ihedibo who was pretty slow frankly. He played good for us but this hides our scheme better.

I also can't think this is the end for signing safeties. The draft is deep with safeties and it's likely some vet or number of vets are going to see an empty market and look to take a 1-yr rental contract to prove worthy of a payday next season. That is our MO anyway.

Draft Two Cents: I see us likely waiting on a Safety in the first, and probably taking an OT. In the second and third there will be options in a similar way that WR's look available into the 2nd and 3rd. (Of course we will take any low hanging fruit.)

I have a good feeling about this kid, he didn't get a lot of attention even from us Ravens fans when he got signed but I think he could be a good situational player on defense and a real solid ST guy this year. Just feels like one of those under the radar signings that pans out better then first expected.

I forgot about ST potential. A fast physical hitter seems to mesh well with ST.

Stewart is #20, not #21.  Only the 2nd one of those had anything to do with Stewart (who definitely took a bad angle on that throw).  All three are all about #21.  The 1st one Torrey beat the corner and Stewart didn't have enough time to get over.  Stewart wasn't even involved in the 3rd one.

I don't know what to make of this signing.

Stewart, 5'11 214 lbs, has been playing at Strong Safety spot for St. Louis Rams last season. One one hand I like the guy and I believe he can help our secondary. But we have Elam at SS and we really need FS. Could Stewart be the starting Free Safety or is this Depth Move? I believe FS spot is the only weakness of this team and it needs to be addressed. Taking FS in the 1st round of Draft might be Ok, but it will still take time fo make him a Valuable Starter. Can we take a risk like that?

When your talking about a safety, your talking about literally the top part of your D. If they get beat its instant TD, that statement cant be anymore true than with a FS. I originally thought the ravens were gonna go after Baily but it might actually happen that they get a FS in the draft. I hope in all honesty they do both. A FS should sit a season regardless because even if they play in a pro style system in college, you are never ready for the speed. Now I think a smart move for them would be to pick up a vet safety and then if that FS is over 30 then draft one as well as an replacement. I can see either HAH or Bucannon or even Tre Boston from UNC playing for us, they all look like great center fielders.

Dude won't see the field outside of special teams.  We'd have to be moronic in the FO to rely on a guy who has finished 1 year to be the starting FS.

Yeah, that is why I didnt like one of the previous ravens articles saying he COULD start at FS, that is one position I would not prefer to leave to chance.

I think our plan is to aim to get a safety in the first two rounds. I could definitely see us taking Clinton-Dix/Calvin Pryor just depends which they like better or if they are there. If we don't get a safety in round 1, I could potentially see us trading up and grabbing Jimmie Ward before teams like Detroit and Chicago pick if he is still there.
