So, we sign a SS to play FS or to back up Elam at SS?

I'm more comfortable with the moves made this off season than last year's but there's still some stuff that makes me scratch my head!

Drafting "Juice" at FB, a dying breed then not using him beyond S/T "meat" and drafting Matt Furstenberg and nary a mention since!Bot

Now this year, resigning Trawick who has only been a S/T player!

Are we merely building a "Super" Special Teams unit or a whole football team?

We are building both. ST is a very important part of every team, and you can't simply ignore it. Pretty much every backup player and depth we have should be able to contribute on ST, otherwise their value to the team is greatly diminished.

I mean if we are going to get rid of guys like Trawick... who is going to cover kicks for us? Flacco?

Jimmy Ward is not worth a 2nd round pick. I wouldn't draft him before the 4th! We don't reach for players when we draft!

Projected as a second round player with an outside shot at going in the back end of the first round.

Thinking he is going to be around in the 4th is naive.

He would normally be a 4th round grade. The safety class is very week. Watch his tape. He plays very reckless and will have a ton of penalties. He is also very small. Watch Calvin Pryor's Highlight's and then watch Ward's. You will see what a real FS looks like when you watch Pryor. You don't waste a pick on a guy just because the class is week. Guarantee you this, Ozzie won't waste a 2nd round pick on Ward. Also, I have seen draft sights and draft books that actually have Ward as a 5th round guy. It all depends who is giving the grade.

The longer it takes the Ravens to get a FS in FA the more I believe they will be going after one in the first round. Risky move if that's what happens but I trust Oz knows what he is doing. Would rather see a young guy back there then someone like Ryan Clark.

Don't get testy, I know how S/T works and I know why some guys are there but we're accumilating a bunch of "scrubs" who can run down the field and tackle/block who may never see the Offensive or defensive sides of a regular season game!

THAT, not Trawick, Furstenberg or where Stewart ends up personally, is my concern!

And ideally, they won't be seeing offensive or defensive snaps, because there's no evidence that those types of players are talented enough to beat out the guys in front of them for those jobs. In an ideal world, a guy like Stewart will be a depth signing at the safety position who will likely never need to play safety, and will be a quality ST player.

Otherwise, you and many other fans would be the first to complain when one of our "studs" tears his ACL running down the field trying to cover a kick, all because we didn't accumulate a sufficient number of your so-called "scrubs" to do that instead.

Despite what many fans think, not every player that is drafted or is acquired to be a part of this team is brought in to be a starting player on offense or defense.

I'd like to see him in action come Spring Training and into the Pre-Season. Maybe he might impress. I understand that he's prob. not our solution at FS or SS, but on S/T.

In Ozzie we Trust, just want to get that out of the way. However, I expected a little more movement during free agency other than grabbing people who were cut or just signing our players who were 8 and 8. In particular, the Steelers are dealing with a lot less cap space than we are yet they get safety Mike Mitchell, we get Darian Stewart. Now they are meeting with LaGarrette Blount and we are sitting still waiting on a running back. The Steelers are getting considerably better with little or no money and we have virtually stayed the same and a lot of our holes will have to be filled by rookies or people no one else wants. I am concerned we will get another round of Michael Huffs and Marcus Spears while our division is getting considerably better. I guess we will have to see how it turns out but repeating the same actions that failed last year is disconcerting especially when we were told the FO would explore ALL opportunities to get better but yet we ignored the best players in free agency AGAIN.

I wouldn't worry about the Steelers. They've had an essentially horrible offseason. Not only have they literally only signed one player (who is an average safety in this league), they also had to let several key players for them walk because they have absolutely no idea how to manage the salary cap. Nobody looks at the Bengals or Steelers on paper right now and thinks they are better than when they ended last season.

I think it may be easier to pick up a starting FS in the draft. I believe there's less of a learning curve and we tend to draft smart guys anyway.

Ozzie has his eye on a guy or two, I'm sure.

I wouldn't worry too much. We have a knack for getting what we need most of the time (Last year excluded).

I think the guys we've picked up so far has been smart.

Like rmcjacket23 mentioned, Ideally, I don't believe everyone we've picked up so far was meant to actually be a starter but if no one else steps up or the studs we get in the 1st and 2nd rds of the draft can't catch on quick enough to be a viable starter, the guys we've pulled in will be needed to keep us competitive until they can.

We're Building a strong foundation.

actually i really like this signing it gives us some depth at the safety position plus he could be an upcoming S/T-player :)!

i'm still hoping for omar brown to get a shot to start at free safety :)! or we do draft either HaHa or pryor in the first round of the draft! i know we can trust in ozzie...he is gonna do just fine!

Now that, I can agree with totally! The acquisition of Stewart is a case in point of a guy who may not break into the starting line-up but may be a valued pick up!

Yet,  were I in Ozzie's & DeCosta's positions, I think my focus would be exclusively on seeking starting players for our holes before grabbing "steals"! I don't see Darian as a "steal" we could not pass but,...

Now, remember, that Corey Graham came to us as a sub who not only played his way onto the "Ones", he became a intrical piece of our defense so who's to say Darian Stewart, possible FS-in-traning, doesn't make a splash in the pre-season and force his way onto the field as a starter !

All this Omar Brown talk needs to stop. Its getting annoying now, he would be on the field if he was good enough righ?

never heard of this guy.

Should have signed Ed Reed back and drafted a Safety.

I don't care if Ed Reeds 50, the man can still play and help mentor/lead our young secondary players. Considering no one else was on the market.......Ryan Clark was never an option before anyone says anything

Pollard was a SS while Huff played at FS - so, even if Pollard stayed, we would have probably had Huff.

And Pollard wasn't released because of his production. First, he was a penalty magnet and second, he reportedly was a locker room pest. Apparently these two overweighed his indeed good performance on the field...

True that to all u said. I just meant that the money paid to Huff could have been spent on Pollard. The penalties I honestly didn't mind that much but being a pest in the locker room is unacceptable. Just really liked the guy lol

Great move to provide depth at the safety position. I could see the Ravens picking up somebody like Bailey for $2-3m one year deal and plugging him into the free safety slot.
