[News] Ravens Agree To Deal With Safety Darian Stewart

174 posts in this topic

I'd rather have somebody who can tackle rather than a player who gets 3-4 INTs a season. Its much more important for a FS to be able to play coverage and tackle receivers than it is for him to play CF and pray people throw deep on him.

I see no positive benefit to the Baltimore Ravens as a franchise to have Ed Reed as a player member of the current team. The only reason fans want him is because they are fans and want to wear his jersey... no fan realistically thinks hes a starting caliber FS in the NFL any longer.

You must not have read what I said... I said I wouldn't mind having him back if we can't find anyone else. The 3 ints he had last year would average out to be about 6 or 7 if he actually got to play in Houston. He is 1 year removed (last year with us) from his 2nd most pass deflections in a season in his career with 15, so don't tell me can't cover anymore.

I wear his jersey anyways.

I would say you made a huge generalization while wrapping up your statement by saying "no fan realistically thinks he is a starting caliber FS in the NFL any longer". I bet you there are a lot of people that think he is, including me. Am I saying he is gonna come in and be 2004 Ed Reed? No. Can he tackle? Not really. But he is a better option then anyone else out there right now. Would you take Michael Huff over Ed Reed? If you would god bless your soul.

I'd put it this way...

There are at least 3 options I'd start at FS over Ed Reed currently, and I'd put them in this order...

1. Any draft pick selected in the first 4 rounds, regardless of who it is

2. Omar Brown

3. Matt Elam

4. Ed Reed

That is the hierachy I would assign as far as the long-term potential of the FS position for the Baltimore Ravens. We can pretend like Ed Reed would have had 6-7 INTs over the course of a season for the Texans, but the reason he didn't play for the Texans is because he wasn't any good. It wasn't because of "scheme" or anything else... he wasn't that good, and he was benched for somebody who was better, just like he was as a member of the Jets, despite his INTs.

If I were a betting man, I'd say Ed is forced into involuntariy retirement, which is when a player like Terrell Owens claims hes not retired, but every team in the NFL stops calling him, thus he basically goes into retirement without wanting to.

Everybody needs to chill. Just because you don't know who he is, doesn't give you the right to make judgements already. Theres a reason its a 1 year deal. And he's coming from a secondary that played well last year. Lets see how he does in camp. Watch him become another gem that Ozzie picks up and everyone will start praising him again. I love the moves were making.

I do too. Keep as many good players as possible. Bring in one big addition. And add lots of potentials.

Go Ravens.

Whats that I hear? The cry of the armchair GM. And I had so hoped that the species had gone extinct.

Right now he is better than what we have and that is nobody. Spagnuolo coached him and knows him. If he sucked I don't think he would let Ozzie sign him. Plus if we draft somebody, he would provide quality depth at both safety positions. Great move.

Aaron Wilson reports: He's more of a strong safety type who's regarded highly for his run support.

Three years ago, Stewart had 91 tackles, one interception returned for a touchdown, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

For his career, Stewart has 147 tackles and three forced fumbles with four sacks.

You never know what this guy just might wind up meaning to the team when it's all said and done. He could make a play to save a game, win a game or maybe even a SB winning play. Welcome to Bmore Darian !.............. P.S. Don't forget your goggles when we play Carolina.

My point has always been the same he was just added for comp and if he is better than the rest than so be it.  These guys are not on long-term deals (only Elam) they all can be cut if better guys are brought in.

except he's not here just for competition.

I thought the move here was pretty obvious, but apparently not.

The Free agent market doesnt have much in the way of Free Safeties on it anymore, yet we still want/kinda need one. That means we're going to try and draft somebody.

In the mean time, this guy is good enough to start right now on a number of teams in the league. Stewart's here because if we dont find the FS we're looking for, or the kid from the draft doesnt pan out or develop or contribute fast enough; Stewart converts and becomes the de facto FS until further notice. The same move we pulled on Huff last year. Either that or they put Elam back over there, and start Stewart at Strong; but i suspect that since they want Elam to be long term SS, they'll leave him so he can develop properly.

Either way, Mr. Stewart is clearly the foundation for Plan B in the Free Safety search.

Another Michael Huff? Probably.

Completely different story. Huff was signed to start. This guy almost obviously isn't.

I don't think this will affect the Ravens drafting a safety. Low cost, possible cut with little to no cap loss. Special teamer. Calvin Pryor is a beast and a must draft if we can get him. He is literally a dismembering machine on the field. Not only can he hit, hard, he is extremely athletic and has great hands. Clinton-Dix just wasn't that impressive to me and Evans and Manziel schooled him when Alabama played Texas A&M. Pryor reminds me more of a young, rangy, hard hitting Ed Reed than Clinton-Dix does. I can clearly remember Reed lowering his shoulder and knocking ball after ball loose. Clinton-Dix doesn't do that but Pryor will knock you out.

Depth/Special teams... Not sure this guy will see much playing time.

I' never heard of Corey Graham before we signed him either....

Must admit: I had never heard of Corey Graham either before he came to Baltimore.... nor about Ihedigbo, Daryl Smith or Monroe...

The only Rams-player I remember coming to the Ravens was Bajema - and I think it was a very good signing (I'm a bit surprised he wasn't in Ozzie's plans to bring back now... he's totally available...). So, while there were teams that almost only gave us trash the past decade or so (most notably the Raiders), the Rams aren't among them...

Another nobody signing while the competition gets better now blouts visiting the steelers Didn't oz see this guy play last year we should have went after him

I agree. While I do believe the Broncos seem to be in panic mode, there is something to be said for taking advantage of the opportunity to improve the team. Last season the Ravens lost to Bills, Browns and got man-handled by the Patriots and Broncos. In the past the Ravens had more veteran leadership to teach guys coming in so OZ could afford to have undrafted guys and cheap free agents that could learn to play better. Not sure if that strategy will work sans Lewis ,Reed, ad other veteran leaders. The rest of the AFC,  has taken advantage of the increase cap and restructured contracts to add or keep players players to make them better.  The Ravens for most part have resigned players from the same 8-8 team and have to address the key position (C,FS, RT,CB). I don't know if you can compete by building the team with cap casualties. Ravens need to start adding difference makers not just role players.

A few rumors floating around I thought you might be interested in...

Free-agent FS Thomas DeCoud (Falcons) said he has received interest from the Baltimore Ravens but no visit has been scheduled at this point.

Baltimore Ravens FS Matt Elam may start at free safety again next season if FS Darian Stewart wins the strong safety job. Elam's position next season likely will be determined by what the team does at the position during the draft. The Baltimore Ravens are interested in re-signing free-agent SS James Ihedigbo but are not expected to match offers he is receiving from NFC teams. Comment | Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson - See more at: http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl#sthash.9k5O6b3E.dpuf

Relax people this is not a signing him to start. They signed him just in case Ha Ha or Pryor doesn't drop to us in the draft and if Ihedebo leaves (which looks very likely), plus he has starting experience and from what i've heard he is another special teams guy which we need with the loses of Graham and Ihedebo. Ozzie knows what he's doing

the reason our secondary has been so nice the past few years is because of Austin... he is gone now and we have a dline coach teaching them.... I always been an realist about everything, and I think this season will be like the last.. we have to many new personals.. out front 7 is getting old, with no young future stars.. I say we go back to what we know best and focus on defense, cause with flacco and our run 1st system we will never have an high powered offense
