We are making to many excuses for OL' danny boy ,,,he is a decent defense coordinator,we talk about how bad our offense was last year,I remember when the offense could not score points and our def had to not only play def, but, they had to play off.all of our past great DC had great schemes,Danny boy,has to set the players up to make the plays... we can not fault the players ,,"oh they are not tackling",wrong answer, the DC plays to everybody's strength , put your players in position to make a play,,,not the other way around,,,you all are very insightful here and I do a lot of reading here (daily ravens fix),but let not give pees the credit he do not deserve, our past DC have gone on to fairly decent head coaches,Danny boy will not get to the next level,he will never be our lebeau,he will be     danny boy

There were alot of issues with the players on saturday. Scheme can take you but so far  and players have to be able to beat their man one on one. You can't scheme for a player to tackle better that's literally impossible. The defensive coordinator can do but for so much and players have to be held accountable for the rest. If Matt Elam or Chykie Brown bite on a screen  or  play  action that's not Pees fault at all but the players fault then rest of blame would have to go to their position coach.

A defensive coordinator does play to everybody strength  and it's not like Dean Pee hasn't either. I think he gets way too much negative feed back and he's not terrible like others making him out to be. I understand people want a defensive coordinator with fire and youth but right now we do not have bad defensive coordinator at all.

Peas was handed a defense in transition let's not forgot that. We are still coming out of the age of Lewis and Reed that we had for a decade.

Now I haven't been exactly impressed but I won't call for his head until we are 20+ ranked D or I feel he is underperforming with his talent.

1988 was a great year so cool name,,,dan is not a great DC,I know I have always said he is decent,,,teams have done allot more with allot less, look at our years draft, since 2009 we have drafted def in rd 1 or 2,,and if you look at the last two years draft,we have taken def in the first 3 rounds,, again 2 yrs straight,so we do have talent and we have players with high football IQ,,yes I know there were a couple questionable players, and yes we have some injuries and yes it is preseason,,,but we do have a great group of  guys, and I think any one of our past DC would have been licking their chops,(by no means am I saying ,if we would have had so and so),so to me if OL'DANNY BOY,can not get it done with this group then he needs a team with all 11 superstars playing def,,, Dan Pees is decent,I am not throwing him under the bus,but if he is jay walking and a bus is coming I may nudge him,,,,just joking,,,all i want is for him to be held more accountable, our past DC would have made danny boy look like a bust,,,

It’s just who he is and it is how he chooses to game plan. From my perspective, his philosophy appears to be predicated on every player beating their man regardless of scheme.  Sometimes this philosophy lacks exotic blitz packages, stunts, and so forth.  This could be why opposing offenses seemingly are able to dominate between the 20′s, but scoring in the red-zone becomes a bit more of a challenge because there is a lot less field to work with.  Personally, I prefer more of an aggressive and attacking defense similar to the philosophy of Chuck Pagano or Rex Ryan.  I can’t really argue too much with the results though.  Keep in mind, the Ravens did win a Super Bowl with Dean Pees at the helm.

If you look at the two best defensive units in the league – I believe they would be Carolina and Seattle – their schemes and game plans are unique and innovative.  They also do an exceptional job expanding on what they do well.  In Carolina’s case, they have two of the best pass-rushing defensive ends in the NFL (Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson).  As a result, their secondary (which does not have any superstars) had 14 total interceptions last year to go along with the team’s 60 sacks. That’s a lot of turnovers and a lot of pressure on the opposing quarterback.  If you add in their linebackers’ interception total, you get 20.

Seattle, on the other hand, just has a completely dominant secondary. Earl Thomas is easily the best free safety in the NFL.  He is probably about as close to an Ed Reed as we’ll see for quite a while.  Kam Chancellor, their strong safety, is built like a linebacker and runs like a receiver.  We all know about Richard Sherman as a lock down corner, but Byron Maxwell is pretty good as well.  Seattle’s linebackers and defensive line aren’t great, but Pete Carroll and Dan Quinn (Gus Bradley is trying to build this in Jacksonville right now) have their defense set up so that teams pretty much have to try and run against them.  Their leading pass-rushers were Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril with eight sacks a piece.  Not bad at all, but both Suggs and Doom had more and they weren’t working with Seattle’s secondary either.  The problem offenses deal with when facing a defense such as Seattle’s is if they start playing from behind, running the ball won’t get it done because there simply isn’t enough time in a game to do that; ergo, they HAVE to try and pass the ball.  And that falls directly into what Seattle does best.

My point is, similar to what we said for years regarding the offensive side of the ball and Cam Cameron/Jim Caldwell, a coordinator’s ability to game plan, scheme, and play call is very important. Unless there are stud players at every position, coaches have to be able to develop a scheme that amplifies what a team does the best.  And even when a team does have stud players at multiple positions (see Denver last year), they are still devising schemes and game plans to increase their probability of success rather than simply JUST relying on guys to “beat their man.”

I hope that I am wrong, but I believe that we will see a lot of the same from the Ravens’ defense this year – bend, but don’t break.  That is why it is critical for the offense to start strong every game.

Try to keep those things in mind before pulling your hair out during preseason games – there will be plenty of time for that later on.                                                                                                                                    article from,,paul lukoskie of russle st report,,

Thanks to Pees (no disrespect to him), but he has neutralized our swagger on D since he took over. For whatever reason, his schemes are either not working or out of date. We need a fresh look on defense and a coach that isn't afraid to take chances with attacking offenses with everything they have. Pees hasn't gotten what the Ravens D really means to Baltimore....

I agree!  I also agree with the follow quote: Personally, I prefer more of an aggressive and attacking defense similar to the philosophy of Chuck Pagano or Rex Ryan.

I don't think he has the personnel to be that aggressive, or didn't. We'll see what he can do this year. If Flacco,Harbs, and Ozzie get a pass for last year then so does Pees. Last year I said the coaching staff would be the most important part of the team, then disaster struck so they all get a mulligan. This year is it. Harbs needs a winning season without "The Icons", Castillo needs to prove he can take this line to new levels, Pees needs to prove he can use all the new young defensive pieces he's been given,Kubiak needs to prove he's still a offensive guru so he can get a new job and promotion, and Spags can brighten his star by keeping this secondary near the top of its potential, on the tough road ahead of it.

As Hardbaugh pointed out, I dont see how its "make or break" for Pees when the defense improved in nearly every category. The fourth quarter slip ups in several games were as much to do with our largely futile offense and new defensive pieces still getting their chemistry going as it was with Pees' playcalling. Im sure there were some things he may have been able to do better in hindsight but nothing to make this a figurative do or die season for him.

Yeah, the d broke because they where the only thing holding us in those games and they were dead tired from doing and the work and the offense not being able to stay on the field.

You can continue to believe that if you want, but it is simply not true. Any TOP issues were of the defense's own making.

If you are going to be aggressive on the defense, then you better have the secondary to support it. We have not fielded the same four/five back there for several years. If we can get a stable secondary that performs well, then I say unleash the dogs. But with a secondary with rookies and hurt players that are not 100% it would be asking for more trouble if we did a lot of aggressive play at the line. So, say what you might about stats, we handed Pees a tough hand with the secondary we have fielded the last couple of years. Let's see if we can field a better secondary during this regular season. If we can get a better secondary which means a healthy Webb, Smith and Jackson along with Elam improving and at least decent play from a free safety that truly is a free safety before we call for Pees head. If we can field that secondary and he still is not aggressive in pass situations, then it will be time to look for a new DC.

The Ravens usually led pretty significantly in TOP, so the defense had no reason to be gassed

Best case scenario, Rex Ryan gets fired after another mediocre Jets season and Harbaugh picks him up.

It would be difficult to have an aggressive defense this year because of all the injuries that we have in the secondary. The more we blitz, the more we have to rely on 1-1 coverage with our banged up CB's.

I wish, but I don't see it happening. I wish Pagano didn't leave...

Still haven't read a convincing argument to dump Pees.

Yeah! Blitz more!!! ...even though our top three corners are hurt...

We should be happy to have Pees this season. His scheme is actually really good at masking deficiencies in the secondary.

I wouldn't put the Cowboys game on Pees at all. Our top 3 CBs were out of that game or in Jimmy's case barely played.

How do coaches get blamed for pro bowlers not shedding blocks?

Nobody's explained this to me and I'd really like a justification.

Did that look a defense that had been coached and prepared at all for opening day? That is how the DC gets blamed.

Did we pressure Dalton at all? One sack, on Andy freakin' Dalton. Get real.

Pees is crap.

You didn't answer my question... There's a theme here, isn't there?
