[News] Ravens Sign WR Steve Smith

306 posts in this topic

I guess we won't get another big signing in the first wave of free agency - what we've been through these couple of days is more than what we've been through the first weeks of free agency of the last couple seasons anyway...

I guess now we're going back to Ozzie's trademark finding-gems-in-the-trash approach, picking up some cap casualties later on, well after the draft.

If he can find a good RT and a FS or a C, I think we're fine.

Great pickup and makes our offense alot better. Still we have to understand this doesn't mean we will become some pass-dominant team that puts up 5000 yards. It's just not how we operate. We will still need a run game so defenses can't sit on the pass and a solid offense line so Flacco has more then 2 seconds to find Smith. But regardless i am very excited, i think this can be the best offense we have ever had if Kubiak can make it right.

All that talk about him being a "distraction" or whatever over on nflcom just kind of evaporates from my mind due to one fact: Mr Ozzie Newsome just signed the man

I'm hoping the Smith is a distraction! I hope to see him walking up and down the sideline yelling at fellow players and coaches. Motivating this teams.

We had no heart last year. I can't remember one cutaway shot before a commercial of a Raven player walking up and down the sidelines yelling at his teammates or talking to the coaches try to motivate people.

This team needs some steam!

I dislike the fact that preseason is still 5 months away though.

Joe is holding his own little mini camps...

People keep forgetting we have one more receiver in the mix - Aaron Mellette. He will also benefit from having that veteran around.

I've been against this move the whole time but now that he's on the team he's I have no choice but to buy in.Hopefully I'm wrong about him trending downward.I'm hoping he proves me wrong because my guy Hakeem Nicks just signed a 1 year $3.5 mil deal which is a complete steal that we could've had.

I just hope most of you guys are right. I am not as sold on this signing. He will be 38 at the end of his 3 year contract. I just don't know many 35 year old WR that are still elite in the NFL. 35 at WR is considered a age for retirement. I hope Smith works out.

Same.

BioLarzen

I agree and honestly am pleased with this offseason so far :)

Im just hoping 1 more need will be filled b4 the end of FreeAgency RT or C or FS

We had 14 mil in cap space heading into today and will have around 9 after todays contracts are sorted. What r the chances we add 1 more starter b4 the draft?

Ebron in the first would make this offense absolutely lethal but we don't need him at this point. I would take Owen Daniels for a cheap deal in FA. We need a ballhawk safety and none are there in free agency because they are almost impossible to find. I can think of 4 or 5 in the NFL right now if that. Earl Thomas, Jairus Byrd, Eric Berry and Ed Reed to an extent though not so much anymore. Calvin Pryor to Baltimore please.

Ravens will have around 8-10 when today's signings r in the books. I dont think they can afford to sign anyone for 7.5 without restructuring current deals.

hmm if it's 10 million they can only get Alex Mack 7 million a year if he accept it and saved 3 million for draft picks that could work

truthfully right now we need a safety, a linebacker, a defensive end, corner back left guard and right tackle. we only need those from the loses that we have had. we need ihedibo back. also we might want a Thomas decoud. he isn't that bad and we could get him cheap. also we should go for alex mack to develop gradkowski. i know ozzie says he wants edleman but we have a strong recieving cor and we should invest it in a nessesity not something u dont need

Love the Steve Smith SR. signing...but all this will be for nothing if that oline isnt sewn-up. Hopefully when the "dust settles" there will be more options for the Ravens to make further adjustments.

We just got Steve Smith on basically a 1 year $3.5 deal with an option for more. And quite frankly, we need a slot receiver, Nicks is not that. Plus, Nicks did not want to come to the Ravens - we were not on his list of teams.

Iconic tester

Put a name to each position u just mentioned and estimate their cap hits. Ravens can't afford a reported 7 mil for mac

What about everyone else. I'd love Mack in a ravens uniform tho

Mack is still in the picture,, signing bonus money, guaranteed money that can be paid in the first 3 years of a contract, Centers are not 12 mil a year positions, so long term deals which what he wants is still very doable...And to stay in the AFCN would be another plus in making a solid play for him...

This is a great pickup any way you look at it. I don't think anyone is surprised that we were once again able to do well in free agency. This offense has gone through an overhaul that is going to comepletely shock people. The draft also gets a lot easier for us after the off season we've had so far.

I think the draft is and should be the plan for both of those spots.

It would be nice to fill them though the draft, but the idea of having a rookie and Elam holding down the top of our secondary makes me a little worried. RT isn't such a problem. Wouldn't surprise me if they give Wagner a shot there anyway.

I think the Smith signing is more about attitude than anything else.

He has an "edge" about him that we could use more of and I think we have enough "Good guys" around here that he won't be "too much".

Get him tutoring our new WR from the 1st round of the draft this year. :-)

Said from the beginning of FA i didn't thin WR was a priority, and i still think that, as Brown did nothing in his rook year to show he couldn't handle the slot...When a rook has a season like Brown, the worst thing you can do, is take balls away from him, you got to let the kid continue to be great..regardless it is done, but i am having a Mack attack, he is the #1 priority IMO....

Ask yourself this... what kind of contract could we sign Mack to that would make it difficult for the Browns to match?

The next person that comes up with one is the first person to come up with one.

We don't need Mack. We just need an upgrade on Gino. Stop shooting for the moon. Its time to shift your fan focus to something reasonable.

I'd consider Peyton Manning and Alex Mack about equally as likely to be Ravens at this time.

Steve Smith is a great pick up for this O glade the ravens didn't let him take his other visit. Nicks is injury prone, and Edlmen was so effective cause of Brady. Smith has done it on his own for 12 season. Time to get one of the top two FS with the 17th overall pick, or a top O lineman if there is one available. Plus CB mike Jenkins would be a nice nickel pickup in FA.
