[News] Ravens Sign WR Steve Smith

306 posts in this topic

Myth420, we probably will. Ha'Sean "Ha Ha" Clinton-Dix will most likely fall far enough in the draft for us to get him. With a FS, we can move Matt Elam to SS, where he's more comfortable. We'll still need a DE, but that can wait until the second round.

OH BABY! This is an amazing move. Not only is this a talent addition but a leadership addition as well. Although i'm a major ravens fan, i've followed the panthers as well. I have watched most of the panthers games since cam newton got there (i'm an auburn tigers fan) and let me tell you.... steve smith is the most intense wr in the entire nfl. His presence alone demands accountability. Now, i mean instense in a good way. He won't air out the qb or anything like that. post delhomme and pre-cam the dude had to suffer playing with qb's like clausen, derek anderson and brian st. pierre. if he were to air out those guys along with a young guy like cam they would wither. The accountability steve demands is from the receivers. He challenges his teammates and makes them better by example and by motivation.

The ravens truly need a guy like this especially post-boldin. The behind the bench segments on ravens tv will show his leadership style and intensity level. I believe that he will automatically make our other receivers better. Also, he is not one to back down from anything.

Steve brings identity to this offense. He will also be able to do major work in the slot (where even he feels that he belongs at this stage in his career). Man... this is such a great move. I know he's 35 but the benefit he will give to our team in terms of identity, accountability and respect is major. Think about it this way. before the panthers 12-4 season, steve smith addressed the team. He blatantly told them that they were NOT going to lose anymore. They started off slow. Steve smith then became more vocal to the offense and riled them up. They went on to end 12-4. Greg hardy was on first take the other day (watched it on youtube) and pretty much confirmed this. Steve is the man and will do wonders for this team in terms of leadership as well as on the field production!

Edelman must have been too expensive or not interested. We have to settle on the 4 foot tall old bitterman Steve Smith. I hope he still has some gas in the tank.

Great job by Oz, continuing to sign our own for usually below market and getting key pieces elsewhere, and we haven't even got to the draft yet.

I'm not sure we'll start the season with a rookie FS and a sophomore SS - but we'll see...

Panthers fan here.  I will be closely following the Ravens now that they signed my favorite player of all time.  You guys are gonna love Smitty.  He has a fire burning inside him unlike anyone I've seen.  Nobody works or plays harder.  I'm still heart broken he got cut.  I hope does great for you guys!

Intriguing move. I've always loved Steve Smith and it'll be interesting to see him finish his playing days here in Baltimore. We're right back on track now it looks like.

If the O-line shapes up next year, our offense is gonna do some amazing things next year. IF AND ONLY IF the O-line plays well.

Not sure if the front office will admit it but the Steve Smith signing is a clear admission that they dropped the ball last year by trading Boldin. With that said, WELCOME TO BMORE, SMITTY!!!

Unless we sign Alex Mack I think we're done with signing free-agents until after the draft. Oz will draft best player available and find which rookies can really play ball and adjust accordingly with the post June cuts

I hope we get Dix, if he's there. However, if Ebron falls to us, I think you have to take him. He's a beast. I'd be happy with Evans, Ebron, Pryor, or Dix.

That's best news I've heard all day! Welcome to Baltimore. Does anyone know how much cap room we have left? Could we realistically go after Alex Mach still, or no?

After this deal should be $8-10M or so. More than enough room. Hoping we get S Chris Clemons cuz we can't roll into next season with a rookie FS next to Elam. I prefer the vet with some young 'vet' talent behind them in Brown, Miles and Trawick.

Well that raps up our free agency and i couldn't be happier. I'm gonna try and contain my temper towards fans talking about signing Mack as much as i can by leaving with these words. Salary Cap!

The Ravens could easily give Mack a deal similar to Monroe's. His SALARY CAP number this year is only $3.2 million.

The Ravens had $15.6 million. I would guess that The Smiths take up about $5 million of that. The Ravens draft picks will take about $3 million. That leaves about $7 million. Easily enough to get a Mack deal done. The Ravens can free up another $1.6 million when they bring in another punter and release Koch. (That probably won't happen til the end of pre-season)

Best part of all this is that the Ravens do not lose any comp draft picks - should still get a 4th for Jones and a 5th for Graham.

One thing y'all should know about Steve, one of the things Panthers fans love about Steve...After his first year, John Fox sent him to Anger Management.  He must have learned something there because now fights start all around him but he is never ever part of them.  He runs his mouth and makes the other team lose their crap.  Next thing you know, they are throwing punches at him or doing something unsportsmanlike and Steve walks away without a single flag thrown against him.  It is hilarious to watch.

As much as i want another piece to our O-line, we're not signing Mack. The top centers in the league right now are averaging about a 7 mil a yr contract. Mack has a transition tag. So for us to sign him, we need to offer a contract the Browns are unwilling to match. So youre looking at around 7.5- to as high as 9 mil a year for Mack. Why the hell would you want to pay that much money for a center? So unless by some miracle the Browns dont want to match a 5-6 mil a yr contract, we're not signing Alex Mack.

There is a possibility with the salary cap, Mack is a center, the Highest paid center is just about 6 mil and that's the last few years on the contract. Typically contract are back loaded meaning that the first year or two have a low cap number. So it is plausible to think that a with relatively low first year cap number we could come close to making him the highest paid center. Now I'm not saying Oz is going to do this because he's not into paying new guys with record breaking contracts, but the salary cap would not be the reason the front office wouldn't go after him. Plus its not like there's a penalty for trying to sign him

Ok I'm going to retract my last comment. At the sake of the salary cap, I guess we're done. You have to think of the huge cap number Flacco will have next year. Gotta have some cushion for that unless he 120 million dollar man will restructure his deal.

I think Steve can be a great mentor to our receiving corps. Like the veteran signings, so far. A little older in the tooth but quality and hungry guys. Now, it's time to see our young players like DeAngelo, Brandon, Hamilton, Simon, KLM, Juice, Jensen ascend. JSmith to continue to grow. If Sizzle, Haloti, and Doom and can play an entire season healthy, Joe gets a run-game and protection, and we nail the draft...back in the playoffs, we should be.
